Description

J. H. LAMBERT CQMBINED OIL AND GREASE BARREL NOV. 119 1924' Filed Dec. 5, i925 Patented Nov, 11, 1924.
a 151mm UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH I-I. LAMBERT, OF GHIGAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO STANDARD OIL CO'MlANY, O1 WRITING, INDIANA, A GUHPOBATION J3 INDIANA.
. GOMBINED OIL AND GREASE Application filed. December 3, 19%. Serial No. 678,185.
To all W/LU/It k ll v/uty concur/t.
Be it known that I, JosnPH H. LAMBERT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented. new and useful Improvement in Combined Oil and Grease Barrels, of which the following is a specification.
It is common practice to'ship oil and grease in headed barrels. Oil is thus shipped from petroleum refineries in socalled oil-barrels, and grease is shipped from that source in so-called greasebarrels. In the ordinarily used sheet-metal oil-barrel type of package, the barrel-body has its heads each permanently secured in place thereon, one head of relatively heavy metal being provided with a bung-closure and a plugged drain-hole, usually in diametrically opposite position thereon, the outer surface of this head being further used for displaying the name of the shipper and a serial number; and the opposite head is devoid of any opening. The grease-barrel type has one end permanently closed by a fixed head and the opposite head removable for filling and rendering the contents conveniently accessible for removal through the uncovered opening.
This practice, by requiring a sullicient supply of these two types of barrels to he kept on hand, and amounting in instances to many thousands thereof is inordinately expensive, since the empty barrels which, particularly when of sheet-metal or steel, are costly at eightor more dollars each, and represent, while out of use, a large amount of idle capital, are left in the open to rust and become deteriorated while awaiting use, whereas it they were serviceable for either the oil or the greasecontaining purpose, the supply could be kept in more constant use and am:ordingly reduce the expense and deterioration rc'lerred to.
'ljhe primary object oi my invention is to adapt the barrel for either of the aforesaid uses, by providing a construction of the oil-barrel head opposite that through which the package is filled with and emptied of oil, for rendering the barrel a grease-barrel as well; and this object is accomplished by the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 shows. in side elevation, an 0ilbarrel of the type referred to having one head constructed as shown in Figs. 3 and -1- to render it a grease-barrel;
Figure 2 presents a face view of an ordinary filling and evacuating head of a steel oil-barrel Figure 3) an enlarged view in elevation of the open end of the barrel presented in Fig. 1, showing my improved construction for rendering it usable as an oil-barrel or a V grease-barrel the form shown, serving at its depressed flat, central portion the display purpose hereinbefore mentioned, though it may involve any other desired form to render the barrel what is known in the trade as an oil-barrel, with its opposite head permanently fixed.
'l o render such an oilba1;rel a combined oil and grease barrel and thereby adapt it to be used for either purpose, I provide it with the end opposite its filling and evacnating; head 7 open and with a circumferential covei.'-scati1i;, flange 10. This may be done, to adapt the ordinary sheetmetal oilbarrel for the twofold purpose, by cutting out sufiicient of the head on such opposite end to form the flange, which should be reinforced about its inner side by securing thereto, as by welding, a metallic annulus ll. which should be Formed in sections, as indicated. at 11. 3); and this flange is tappedat H('i}')(-"I' intervals to provide tl'ircaded bolt-holes ilfl through it and its reinforcement to receive bolts i which are preferably upset at their inner ends as shown at 13 (Fig. after being inserted, to prevent them from becoming dislodged and lost. A gasket 15 is shown to extend continiunisly on the outer surface oi? the flange 10, though it is not necessarily continuous. The open barrel-end is closed by a cover 16, shown of disk form and provided at intervals with a circumferential series of holes 17, each of a diameter to turned to bring the bolts into the slots 17 whereupon the bolts are screwed to clamp their heads against the packed flange and thus firmly, but removably, secure the cover in place. The cover may be readily removed for filling the barrel with and emptying it ofi grease,v by loosening the bolts 13 and bringing them into the holes 1;? by rotating the cover to free it for the purpose.
I realize that considerable variation is possible in the details of construction hereinshown and described, and I do not intend by illustrating or describing a single specific or preferred embodiment of my improvement; to, be, limited thereto, it being my intention in the, following claims to claim protection. for all the novelty there may be in my invention as fully as the state of the art will permit.
I claim:
1. As a new article of manufacture, a combined- Oil andgrease barrel, comprising a, barrel-body having a fixed head on one end, provided with means through which to fill and evacuate it, and having the opposite end open and provided with an interior cover-seating annular flange, a, cover seating against said flange and bearing flatwise directly thereon and means for removably securing the cover to the flange to form. the oppositebarrel-head.
As a new article of manuliacture, a combined oil and grease barrel, comprising a barrel-body having a fixed head onone end provided with means through which to fillv and evacuate it, and having the opposite and open and provided with an interior cover-seating annular flange containing a series oil threaded openings, a cover seating against said flange, and provided with marginal boltholes Of a circumference exceeding that of the head ot the bolt and having elongated slots extending from them, and bolts passing throughsaid cover and flangeopen-ings for releasably securing the cover n i s seat- 3. As a new article of; manufacture, a combin doil and r ase barrel, comprising a ber ole od av g a fixed head on. one end providediwith means through which to fill; and evacuate it, and having the opposite end open and provided with an interior cover-seating annular flange containing a series of threaded openings, bolts working in said openings and confined at their inner ends against withdrawal, and a cover provided with marginal bolt-holes of a circumference exceeding that of the head of the bolt and having elongated slots and adjustable, at said holes. over the bolt-heads to seat against said flange and be rotatable thereon to introduce the bolts into said slots for releasabl-y securing the cover in place.
4;. The method of converting a sheet metal oil-barrel having a. head provided with means through which to fill and evacuate it, into a combined oil and grease harrel, which consists in cutting out a portion of the opposite barrel-head to leave a portion thereQii forming an interior cover-seating annular flange, providing bolt-holes in said flange, seating a cover, containing circumferent'ial bolt-holes of a circumference exceeding that of the head of the bolt and elongated slots extending therefrom, against said flange and bolting the cover and flange together through their said holes upon rotating the cover on its seat to enter the bolts into said slots for releasably securingthe cover inplace.
5., The method of converting asheet-metal oil-barrel, having; one head provided with means through which to fill and evacuate it, into a combined oi-L and grease barrel, which consists cuttingout a portion of the opposite barrel-head to leave a portion thereof tormingan interior cover-seating annular flange, rein-forcing said flange and forming through it and the reinforcement internally threaded bolt-holes, confining bolts against withdrawal in, saidholes, applying a cmer containing circumiierential boltholcs of a circumference exceeding that of the head of: the bolt and elongated: slots extending thcrcfrom over the bolt-heads to seat it against said flange, and turning the cover on its seat to enter the bolts into said slots for releasably securing the cover in place.
6. As anew article of manufacture, a combined oil and grease barrel, comprising a barrel-body having a: fixed head on one end having relatively small openings therein tlji roughwhichto fill and evacuate it, and provided at its op wsite end with a rela tively large opening, and a removable cover for said last referred to end.
