FRANCIS J'. MLAGI-IER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
. DOOR CONTROLLER.
Application filed March 13, 1923. SeriaI No. 624,718.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that T, FRANCIS J. hilnnerrnn, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of New York, borough and county of Queens, in the State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Door Controllers, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to mechanism for opening and closing doors and more particularly for operating elevator shattway doors.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple, easily operated door opening device for sliding doors which will close the door automatically when released, and operate quickly and quietly. Another important object is to provide means whereby the partly closed door is held against any attempt by persons on the corridor side to re-open it. A further object is to provide means for disconnecting the device to allow the sliding door to be swung outwardly when required. Another important object is to provide means whereby the controller can be easily and reliably installed without requiring alterations in or special construction of the doorframe or shaft to receive it.
The invention consists in certain novel features and details of construction and an rangement by which the above and other ob jects are attained, to be hereinafter described and claimed.
The accompanying drawings form a part of the specification and show the invention as it has been carried out in practice.
Figure 1 is an elevation showing a sliding shaftway-door equipped with the improved controller, seen from the interior of the shaft.
The remaining figures are on a larger scale and show portions.
Figure 2 is an elevation, partly in vertical section, showing the keeper and its connections to the door, and the door-operating lever slidably received in such keeper.
Figure 3 is a transverse section taken on the line 33 in Figure 2.
Figure 41 is a section taken longitudinally of the lever and keeper, on the line 1 4 in Figures 2 and 3.
Figure 5 is a horizontal section taken on the line 55 in Figure 2.
Figure 6 is a side elevation of the fixed bracket to which the lever'is connected, and other connected parts, partly in vertical section.
Figure 7 is a plan or top View of the bracket.
Figure 8 is a face view of the same.
Figure 9 is a transverse section taken on the line 9 9 in Figure 6.
Figure 10 is a transverse section taken on the line 1010 in Figure 6.
Similar reference numerals indicate the same parts in all the figures. i
The door 12 is suspended from hangers 1 engaged with a horizontal track 1 1 and slides horizontally in the usual manner to open and close the elevator shattway opening. The saddle or sill of the doorframe is marked 15 and the jambs or bucks 16.
- At the lower corner of the doorframe farthest from the door-opening, is secured the master bracket 17 fastened by screws at 19 to the buck 16, and having a horizontally projecting foot 18 similarly fastened to the saddle 15 and is thus held firmly in position. Near the upper end of the vertical portion of the bracket 17 is an outwardly projecting semicircular lug 20 in which is a centrally located pin 21 serving as a pivot fora bifurcated arm 22 the legs 23 of which inclosc the lug 20 and are mounted on the pin.
The body of the arm is U-shaped, see Figure 10, and has a partition or abutment 211 near the lower end provided with an aperture 25 through which extends a chain 26 fastened at one end to a pin 27 in the vertical reinforcing flanges 28 of the bracket 17, and at the other to a rod 29 standing inclosed in the arm 22; the rod is encircled by a helical compression spring 31 abutting at the lower end against the'partition 24: and at the upper end against a nut 32 on the screwthreaded outer end of the rod.
The chain 26 lies tangentially to the curve of the lug 20 and, with the rod 29, is thus maintained axially in the arm 22 as the latter is swung on the pin 21. The expansive force of the spring 31 tends to swing the arm outwardly and downwardly and the compression of the spring is adjusted by the nut 32.
Set transversely of the legs 28 below the chain'26 is a pin 33 to which is attached the plunger rod 3 1 of a checking cylinder 35 pivotally connected at the lower end to the foot18 of the bracket 17 and serving to retard the outward movement of the arm 22 as will be understood. The rapidity of the outward swing is varied as required by a flow controlling screw 5? set in the upper head special provisions to permit installation are avoided, and as the mechanism occupies but little space such installation is greatly simplified with a corresponding reduction in cost.
The parts Within the keeper and arm are concealed and protected, and the joints are constructed to avoid Wear and insure stability and alinement. The construction of the spring closing mechanism and manner of connecting the checking mechanism are such as to permit installation under all conditions.
The controller is simple, durable, eflicient and inexpensive, and the parts are easily accessible for inspection and repairs.
Modifications may be made in the forms and proportions in adapting the controller to various types of doors and conditions of service, and parts of the invention may be used Without the Whole.
I claim 1. In a device of the character set forth, a bracket adapted to be secured to the buck of a doorframe and having a foot rigid therewith and adapted to be secured to the saddle, and a door-operating lever pivotally mounted on said bracket and adapted for attachment to a sliding door.
2. In a device of the character set forth, a bracket adapted to be secured to the buck of a doorframe and having a rigid angled foot adapted to be secured to the saddle thereof, a door-operating lever pivotally mounted on said bracket, a spring carried by said lever, connections from said spring to said bracket, and means for increasing the tension of said spring by a movement of said lever in one direction.
' 3. In a device of the character set forth, a bracket adapted to be secured to the buck of a doorframe and having a rigid angled foot adapted to be secured to the saddle thereof, a lug on said bracket having a curved outer face, a door-operating lever pivotally mounted on said lug, a spring'carried by said lever, and a chain connecting said spring to said bracket and arranged to lie tangentially to such curved face.
4. In a device'of the character set forth, a bracket embodying rigid substantially right angled members, a lug thereon hav-.
ing a curved outer face, a holloW lever hav ing legs pivotally secured to said lug, a partition in said lever, a spring Within the latter, a rod inclosed in said spring and having a nut, said spring abutting at one end against said partition and at the other against said nut, a check connected With said bracket adjacent its angle and With said lever adjacent its pivot and a chain connecting said rod and bracket and arranged to lie tangentially to such curved face.
5. In a device of the character set forth, a bracket having rigid substantially rightangled members adapted to be secured to the buck of a doorframe and to the sad dle thereof, a door-operating lever pivot ally mounted on said bracket, a spring carried by said lever, connections from said spring to said bracket, means for increasing the tension of said spring by a movement of said lever in one direction, and checking means connected to said lever and to said foot and arranged to retard the movement of said lever in the opposite direction.
6. A bracket for the purpose set forth embodying an upright member adapted to be secured to the buck, and a rigid substantially right-angled foot adapted to rest upon and be secured to the saddle, said bracket being formed near its upper end and adjacent its angle With lugs to receive pivots of a sliding-door actuating arm and a checkrespectively.
In testimony that I claim the invention above set forth I aflix my signature.
FRANCIS. J. MEAGI-IER.
