UNHTED STATES 1,515,097 PATENT: OFFICE.
WILLIAM -EL nIcKsoN, on ONTARIO, CALIFORNIA, AssIcrNOn or oNE-HALFTO GEORGE B. ELLIOTT, OF ONTARIO, CALIFORNIA.
- TIINFT LOOK For. DISK WHEELS.
To @ZZ whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, VILLIAM E. DIoiIsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ontario, in the county of San Bernardino and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Theft Locks for Disk `Wheels, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to signal devices and more particularly to theft locks for disk wheels of automobiles and other vehicles.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a soi-called theft lock adapted to be applied readily to vehicle wheels having disk centers. Another object is to provide a theft lock of simple and practical construen tion and which may be securely fastened when applied.
Other objects and advantages will be made manifest in the following specification of an embodiment of the invention illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is a radial section through a wheel rim of the disk type carrying a pneumatic tire and showing in elevation the applied and fastened theft lock.
Fig. 2 is a section in detail on line 2--2 of Fig. 1 showing the locking means.
Fig. 3 is a sectionyon line 3 3 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a detail section on line 4 4 of Fig. 2, showing the bolt in free or disengaging position, and Fig. 5 isasection on the same line showing the bolt turned to look ing position.
The present theft signal and lock consists of a pair of arcuate clamp sections 2 and 3 having inner curved surfaces, approximating the curvature of the given size tire T which is mounted on a rim R of a wheel having a disk center or plate D. The clamp arms or sections 2-3 are mutually mortised and tenoned as shown in Fig. 3, and connected at the meeting ends on a pivot pin 5 so disposed as to permit the clamp sections 2 and 3 to be closed and opened to-ward and from the tire T so as to bring inwardly turned ends 2a and 3a in toward the wheel disk D in such manner as to prevent the direct radial pulling of the theft lock from the rim when the clamp sections are closed.
Means are provided for fastening the clamp sections in the closed position and such means are here shown as including a key controlled cylinder lock 10 having an inwardly projecting semicylindrical bolt part 11 which is shown as peripherally grooved to form locking teeth 12. The lock cylinder 10 is adapted to be mounted in a pocket 13 provided therefor as in the clamp section 2, and when this section is brought into closed position, the rotary bolt 11 will project into a position in which it can be rotated so that the teeth 12 can be meshed with the interrupted or semicylindrical nut socket 14 provided in the clamp section 3.
It will be seen that when the semicylindrical bolt 11 is carried up by its clamp section 2, it will be presented in diametrically opposite position to the nut like socket or toothed chamber 14. Then by rotating the bolt 1l by means of the key K, the latter will'be turned into interlocking mesh with the toothed socket 14, and thereafter it will be impossible to separate the clamp sections 2 and 3 until the semicylindrical bolt 11 is again rotated out of engagement with the nut or socket part 14.
Preferably, the inwardly projecting clawlike ends 2a and 3EL of the clamp sections are provided with cushioning pads or grippers 15 which may be brought in against the faces of the disk D and, therefore, these will be protected against marring and scratching by engagement with the ends of the clamps.
Further embodiments, modiiications and changes may be resorted to within the spirit of the invention as here claimed.
What is claimed is:
1. A theft lock and signal device comprising a pair of clamp-like sections pivotally connected and having inwardly turned ends to be closed in toward the contiguous faces of a disk wheel, and means for locking the clamp lock sections in closed position, said locking means including an interrupted toothed socket provided in one section and a key controlled semicylindrical bolt provided on the other section and adapted to be rotated into locking engagement with the teeth of the socket.
2. A theft lock and signal device comprising a pair of clamp-like sections pivotally connected and having inwardly turned ends to be closed in toward the contiguous ,faces of a disk wheel, one section having internal threads describing substantially half a circle and the other section having a key controlled bolt with an externally threaded end forming half a circle, the threads of the bolt llO meshing with the internal xthreads when the pivot and including an interrupted toothed bolt isi yproperly turned. socket provided 'in one section and a key 3. A theft look and signa-l device oo mpriscontrolled Semi-oylindrioal bolt provided on ing a pair of `clamp-,like sections pivotally the other ysection and adapted to be rotated 5 connected at their points formed "on the into locking engagement wth'the teeth of 15 lower ends and having inwardly turned upt'he socket. per ends to be closed in toward :thelcontigu- In testimony whereof I have signed my ous faces of a disk Wheel and means lor name to this specification. lookingfthe clamplike.s eotions in olsosed po- 10 sition, said looking mea-ns being above the VILLIAM E.
