To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM M. HARRIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Evanston, 'in the county of Uinta and State of Wyoming, have invented new and useful Improvements in Pens, of which the followingr is a specification.-

his invention relates to a pen, the general object of the invention being to provide means for making impressions upon checks and the like which cannot be altered.

Another object of the invention is to make the writing point in the form of a roller with means for furnishing ink or the like to 1 the roller.

This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several arts, to be hereinafter fully described, il-

ustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.

In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a side view of the device.

Figure 6 is a view similar to Figure 3, but showing the head partly removed.

In these views 1 indicates the handle of the device which at one end is provided with a bore 2 and a projection 3 which is ofv tapered shape, .as shown. A removable head 4 has a reduced part 5 which fits in the bore with enough friction to hold the head in position. The head is provided with a chamber 6 which opens out at the side of the head which is engaged by the projection 3 so that said projection 3 acts as a cover for the said chamber. One wall of the head is rovided with a socket 7 which receives tlie stems 8 of a pair of plates 9. The outer parts of these plates are bent over the outer end of the head and these parts have openings 10 therein to receive and hold aball 11. The outer plate is formed with an extension 9' which extends upwardly and inwardly so that its end will engage the end of the projection 3 when the head is in place. The parts are so arranged that the ball projects beyond the plates so that a portion of the ball is in the chamber and another portion projects beyond the end of the head. The ball is rotatably mounted in the plates and the parts are so positioned that when the end of the head is placed adjacent a surface the ball will contact with said surface and when the pen is moved along the ball will rotate and thus act as a pen point. Ink or the like is furnished to the ball by means of a pad 12 located in the chamber 6 and having a part contacting with the inner part of the ball. The device can be provided with a cap 13 which may contain theholdi'ng clip 14 for holding the pen in a pocket. I also provide a pad 15 upon which the sheet to be written upon is laced, thus allowing the ball to make a eep impression in the sheet written upon and also preventing the impression from being made on the sheet beneath as in a check book.

As shown the ball is provided with indentations 16 which form raised portions which will convey the ink or other material to the sheet. The invention is designed for writing checks and other valuable papers and forms an impression that cannot be altered.

It will ofcourse be understood that the device can be used for writin on an surface as I do not wish to be limited to c ecks. It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of m invention will be readily apparent.
