saranr ERNEST GOBURN, OF'SPOKAIQ'E, WASHINGTON, ASSIGNOR TO THE HOLT MANUFACTUR- ING COMPANY, OF STOCKTON, CALIFORNIA, A CORPORATION OF CALIFORNIA.
enam' CARRIER Application filed June 23, 1920. Serial No. 391,028.
1 '0 all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that ERNEST COBURN, a citizen of the United States, residin at Spokane, in the county of Spokane an State of Washington, has invented a new and useful Improvement in Grain Carriers, of which the following isa specification.
This invention relates to grain carriers of the endless flexible type, such. as arousal in threshing machines or separators.
The object of this invention is'to produce a durable carrier and one inexpensive to construct.
This I accomplish by dis ensing with all materials which are liab e to wear out quickly or deteriorate, and instead employ metal channels carried by leather straps, said channels being interlocked in away to permit the necessary flexibility between ad acent cells.
One form which my invention may assume is exemplified in the following description and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:-
Fig. 1 shows a plan view of a carrier embodying my invention, with a portion of the metallic cells or slats broken away to show the leather straps beneath.
Fig. 2 shows a vertical longitudinal sectional view of the same on an enlarged scale.
Fi 3 shows a cross-section of one of the cell orming members.
Fig. 4 shows a cross-section of one of the coupling members.
Fig. 5 shows a cross-section of the other coupling member.
As shown in its present form, the carrier is made up of a series of cells, each in the form of a sheet' metal channel which includes a bottom web 10, a single flange 11, and a double flange 12. These cell forming members are connected together by inserting the single flange of one into the double flange of the othentlie latter flange being bent opt at 13 to allow the single flange to rock within wherebyto provide the necessary flexibility between adjacent cell members. These cell members are laid down upon leather belts l4, and each is rivited thereon. There are preferably three parallel belts one at each side and one in the middle, and two diagonally extending belts. The cell members each have a head 15 at each end, such head being formed of an angular piece or metal held in place by the rivet which attaches the cell member to the outside belt.
The belts at their ends are fastened together to produce an endless carrier by means of two specially formed metallic coupling members, one ofwhich is shown in Fig. 4 and the other in Fig. '5. The member shown in Fig. 4 is in the form of a channel mits the necessary flexible movement between the connected parts. 1 The two coupling members are then brought together and fastened by means of bolts 20.
The carrier thus produced possesses great flexibility and is practically indestructible so far as ordinary wear is concenred. The material used is a very light gaugemetal and theshapes required are few and easil made so that the com leted carrier is muc less expensive to bui d than prior canvas and wood slat carriers.
Various changes, in the construction and arrangement of the several parts may be employed without departing from the spirit of my invention as disclosed in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
- 1. An endless flexible carrier for grain, comprising a series of transversely extend ing cells, each formed of a channel-shaped member having a botom web, a single flange, and a double flange, the single flange being interlocked with the double flange of the adjacent cell and movable to permit the interlocked members to flex, separate metallic end-walls for the cells, and endless flexible straps to which said cell members are connected.
2. An endless flexible carrier for grain, comprising a series of transversely extending cells, each formed of a channel shaped member having a bottom web, a single flange, and a double flange, the single flange of one being interlocked with the doublefiange of the adjacent cell and movable therein to permit the interlocked members to flex, flexible' straps to which said cell members are connected, and means for uniting the ends of said straps comprising two metallic coupling members, one
in the form of a channel having a singlewall and a double wall, the single wall interlocking with the double flange of the adjacent cell member, and the double Wall receiving one end of each strap, the other c0up ling member comprising a U-shaped clip to receive the other end of each strap and to 15 interlock with the single flange of the ad- .jacent cell member, and bolts for uniting witnesses.
ERNEST COBURN. Witnesses:
JOHN H. PLUMMER, FLORENCE TV.v TARR.
