ROLLING MILL-' Applicationfiled April 27, 1922 SeriaLNo. 557,017."
To alt ac/m it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN W. Snaresnson, a citizen of the United States, residing--at Worcester, in the county of l Vorcester and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in a Rolling Mill, of which the following, toether with the accompanying drawing, is
b n a specification.
' The present invention relates generally to rolling mills. The invention resides in a novel combination and arrangement of roll itself not only to the rolling and handling trains and auxiliary equipment, which adapts of a diversified product of ordinary steel billets, sheet bar and the like, but also to the convenient production, when desired, of various shapes made'of special alloy steels.
The various features and advantages of the invention are fully set forth in the following description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, the single figure of which is a diagrammatic plan view. of
rolling mill apparatus combined and arranged in accordance with the invention.
Referring to sald drawing, 1 represents a blooming mill of ordinary construction for the reduction of ingots taken from soaking pits, not shown. By any suitable conveying means, indicated diagrammatically at 2, the product of the blooming mill 1 is car ried to a billet and slab mill 3,,the rolls of 'which, preferabl provide a plurality of differently-shaped rows of passes, toogive such variety as may be desired in the crosssection of the reduced material emerging therefrom, I
The reduced product of roll train 3, con-. sisting of billets, slabs and the like, is re ceived upon a conveying mechanism 4: of any suitable construction and'is carried longitudinally forward in the direction of a sheet bar mill 5, constituted by a roll train which provides one or more stands of edging rolls 6, 6. As herein shown, the conveying mechanism 4 does not deliver the prodnot of roll train 3 directly to the roll train 5, but on the contrary, said roll train 5 receives said product from a suitable longitudinal conveying mechanism 7, which is offset from the line of delivery of conveyingmechanism 4. Interposed between the conveying mechanisms 4; and 7 ,is a suitable of the material.
as rapidly or as slowly as desired, acrossthe interyemng space the, transfer mechanism 8 thus constitutes, in effect, a delay table, the function of which is to permit as much or as little time to elapse, as may be desired,
for the'cooling of such of the (products of the roll train 3 as may need a lower temperatuie for their further" reduction by rolling.
For the disposition of the otherproducts of the mills 1 and 3, provision is made for the broadside transfervof the same to a suitable longitudinal conveying mechanism 9, which delivers in one direction to a roll desired. Interposed between the conveying I mechanisms 4 and 9 is a suitable broadside transfer mechanism 13,similar in its capabilities to the transfer mechanism 8 and operating, when desired, as a delay table on which to accomplish any requisite cooling livered to the mill 10 by the conveying mechanism 9, after undergoing reduction in the successive passes of the roll train, is disposed of in the usual fashion by a shear 14v and cooling beds 15; such mechanism, as well as the corresponding shear,l6 and cooling beds 17 which are provided in connection with the sheet bar mill 5, form no part of the present invention and hence need not be described in detail.
The above described arrangement of apparatus lends itself particularly to the convenient and expeditious treatment of any of the desired alloysteel products of the mills 1 and 3, that require the removalof surface imperfections before any further rolling is done. Such material, as delivered by the transfer mechanism 13 to the conveying mechanism 9, is carried rearwardly by said conveying mechanism and acted uponby a shear 18, the pieces being then disposed for cooling either on the cooling beds 11 oron the cars" 12. Ineither case, such material is eventually delivered in convenient location for the operationof chipping, to remove the surface imperfections, or for any other operation required, before further rolling action thereon. In order to heat such material, to prepare it for further rolling, furnaces19 are provided, and so arranged, with relation to the con= Such material as is dea 'veying mechanism 9, that the billets discharged from said furnaces are received 1 directly on said conveying mechanism, in
, with the conveying mechanism 2, in advance of the reducing roll train 3. It is thus possible to procure, when desired, the passage of pieces of large section directly from the blooming mill 1 to the cooling devices 11 or I claim: 1. Apparatus of the class described, comprising, in combination, longitudinal conveying mechanism for the product of a billet and slab mill, two independent reducing roll trains adapted, selectively, to receive said product-,and a delay table interposed between said conveyingmechanism andboth of said roll trains. 2. Apparatus of the class described, comprising. in combination, longitudinal con veying means. for the product of a billet and slabinill, two independent reducing roll trains adapted, selectively, to receive said product, the center lines of each of said roll trains being offset from said conveying 'nieans, and-a broadside tl2LI1Sf61,CODStltIlting a delay table for cooling the product, interposed between said conveying meansand each of said roll trains.
3. Apparatus of the class described, comprising. in combination, a reducing. roll train, conveying means normally operable to deliver material directly thereto, and
means for obtaining the cooling, storing, cliipping,,and reheating of said material, prior to its delivery to said roll train.
4. In apparatus of the class described,
.means served in common by said conveying comprising, in combination, a broadside transfer mechanism for the product of a billet and slab mill, a longitudinal conveying mechanism adapted to receive said product;
from said transfer mechan sm, and means,
selectively operable, either to procure the further reduction of said product as received on said conveying mechanism, or to procure intermediate surface treatment and reheating of the. same before resumption of rolling.
' 5. In apparatus of the class described, a
reducing roll train, a longitudinal conveying mechanism associated therewith and adapted to deliver thereto, means for delivering. material broadside to said longitudinal convey ing mechanism, and means for procurin when *desired, the intermediate treatment of saiddelivered material, prior to its passagev to said reducing roll tram.
6. In apparatus ofthe class described, a reducing roll train, a longitudinal conveying mechanism adapted to deliver material thereto. a heating device adapted to deliver materlal to said longitudmal conveying mechanism, and means for delivering material broadside to saidlongitudinal convey-.
ing mechanism intermediate said roll train and said heating device, whereby to permitreheating of said material prior to its reduction-by said roll train. Dated April 17, 1922.
