E. FISHER EGG CARRIER Filed Nov. 19, 1923 EMMETT 77am?- W mdggw.
Patented Nov. 4-, 1924.
UNITED STATES EMMETT FISHER, OF QUINCY, ILLINOIS.
nee can nes;
Application filed November 19, 1922. Serial No. 675,673.
To all whom m concern Be it known that I, EMMETT FISHER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Quincy, in the county of Adams and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Egg Carriers, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to receptacles generally and particularly to egg carriers and has for its principal object to improve upon the closure thereof by providing the same with means whereby the closure may be held in place and is formed so as to provide a handle whereby the receptacle may be conveniently carried. about.
lVith the above and numerous other objects in view as will appear as the description progresses, the invention resides in certain novel features of construction, and in the combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a top plan view of a device embodying my invention,
Figure 2 is a side elevation thereof;
Figure 3 is a vertical section therethrough and Figure 4 is a detail perspective of the closure and locking means therefor.
Referring to the drawing in detail it will be seen that 1 designates the receptacle which may be of any desired formation or size for receiving a desired number of partitions 2 and fillers 3 in order that eggs may be safely carried within the receptacle. A closure 4 is held in place by a combined handle and locking member 5 which is in the form of a plate having an intermediate restricted or handle portion 6. Extensions 7 are provided at one end of the body of the member 5 and terminate in curved portions 8 extended beyond the edge of the closure 4 so as to pierce slots provided in one side of the receptacle. Extensions 9 are provided at the other end of the body of the member 5 and bolts 10 are associated therewith so as to be slidable in and out of openings provided on the opposite side of the receptacle 1 as is indicated to advantage in Figures 1 and 3. These bolts 10 are constructed with slots 11 for receiving headed pins 12 mounted in the extension" 9. The body of the member 5 is preferably secured to the closure 4 and when the bolts 10 are withdrawn from the adjacent side of the receptacle the closure may be hinged to a substantially vertical position at which time the curved portions of the extensions? may be removed from the slots or openings of the receptacle. When the bolts 10 are in an extended position through the side of the receptacle they are held in this position by hook latches 13 which are pivoted at 14 to the side of the receptacle.
Particular attentionis called to the fact that the intermediate portion of the body of member 5 is raised or spaced from the closure 4 in order that a gripmay be obtained upon the portion 6. This is indicated to advantage in Figure 3.
This structure embodies a minimum number of easily operated and eiiicient parts which are simple, reliable, inexpensive to manufacture and assemble and well adapted for the purpose designed. There is practically no danger of the closure becoming accidentally open while the carrier is in transit and when desired the carrier may be easily lifted by grasping the handle 6. It will be seen that such a device as I have disclosed is particularly useful to the farmerin bringing his eggs conveniently to the market as is now the common practice because of the more easy access to the market since the advent of the automobile.
The parts of this egg carrier are prefer: ably constructed of metal but, of course, other suitable material may be used without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Although I have described my invention with a certain degree of particularity, it is to be understood that numerous changes in the details of construction, and in the combination and arrangement of parts may be resort ed to without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages. 7
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
1. In combination, a receptacle embodying a plurality of sides, a closure for said receptacle, a locking element disposed on said closure with one end piercing a side of the receptacle and the other end abutting another side of the receptacle, a bolt slidably mounted on the last mentioned end of the locking element adapted to pierce the last mentioned side of the receptacle, and means for holding the bolt extended through said last mentioned side of the receptacle.
2. In combination, a receptacle embodying a plurality of sides, a closure in said receptacle, a locking member mounted on said closure and having one end pi rcing a side of the receptacle and its other end abutting another side of the receptacle, a bolt slidalole on the last mentioned end of the member and adapted to pierce the last mentioned side of the receptacle, and means on the ex-
