Be it known that I, FRANK Rines, a citi- Zen of the United States, and a resident of Indianapolis, county of Marion, and State of Indiana, have invented a certain new and useful Punch and Press; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which like numerals refer to like parts.l
This invention relates to a manually operated punch and press particularly adapted for use in securing brake linings tobrake bands and the like. A
The main object of the invention is to provide a device. of this character of a substantial construction but simple in design so that it may be more cheaply made.
One feature of the invention resides in the housing for they actuating rod, whereby said rod will beembodied lin and concealed by the supporting standard of the punch and press.
This invention also includes a tray supporting bracket formed integral with the machine as a part thereof, for holding the tools, rivets and the like. i Another feature of the invention resides in the arrangement of the actuating lever with respect to the plunger, and still further featuresof the invention as relate to the general combinationv and parts of themachine will be hereinafter more specifically set forth and described.
The'full nature of this invention will be understood from the accompanying drawings and the following` description and claims.
In the drawings Fig. 1 is a front elevation of the machine with the central portion thereof removed. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the machine as shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the machine with a portion of one side thereof broken away.
In the drawings there is shown a punching press supported by a base 10 having a iiange 11 formed on the bottom thereof for providing a suitable support and securing plate. The base 10 comprises an upright hollow barrel portion into which may be inserted the lower end of the tubular supporting standard 12, said tube being adjustably and removably secured within the barrel portion of the base by the set screw 13. The standard 12- extends vertically upward to the proper working height of the operator and is adapted to receive about its upper end a hollow barrel portion of the head 14, saidv head being removably and adjustably secured on the tubular standard 12 by the set screw 15, said tubular standard extending into the head as shown by the dotted lines. Formed integralk with and extending laterally from the head 14 there are a pair of arms or jaws comprising the upper j aw 16 and lower jaw 17. The outer end of the jaw 16 is provided with a tubular barrel 18 formed integral therewith and extending vertically and parallel with the standard 12. Immediately below the barrel 18, spaced therefrom and in alignme-nt therewith, there is a die or tool receiving support 19, said support being formed integral'with and on the end of the lower jaw 17. As shown herein, there is secured upon the upper side of the support 19 a female punch member 20, and slidably mounted in the barrel 18 there is a plunger 21 having adjustably secured in the lower end thereof the male punched member 22. The female member 20 remains fixedly secured on the lower jaw, while the plunger 21 is reci-procated up and down for punching or pressing the work positioned between the jaws by the operator.
The plunger 21 is operated by `means of the lever 28 which is'fulcrumed at 24 on the ear 25 extending outwardly from the upper jaw 16. The outer end of said lever is curved upwardly to provide a rounded head 26 positioned to engage and abut the upper end of the plunger 21. On each side of the head 26, and formed integral therewith, there are flanges 27 between which the upper end of the plunger 21 extends, said flanges being provided with inclined slots 28 through which the pin 29 extends, said pin extending through the upper end of the plunger 21 for maintaining it in connection with the head 26. By means of this arrangement, the use of the link is avoided and the plunger is actuated by a direct contact with the lever, at the same time eliminating the use of a spring for maintaining it normally in upward position. The lever 23 is actuated through the medium of a rod 30, extending through the tubular standard 12. Said rod 30 is pivotally connected at its Vby. The lower end of the rod 30 is pivotally connected with the foot actuated lever 3l, which lever is fulcrumed at 32 on the upwardly extending bracket 33 formed on the base plate 11. Theouter free end of the foot lever 31 is provided with a pedal 34 so as to be capable of operation bythe foot of the operator. For normally maintaining the pedal 34 and the plunger 21 in their upward positions, as shown in Fig. 2, there is provided a spiral spring 35 housed in the base 10, the upper end ofsaid spring being connected with the rod and the lower end `with the lower portion of the housing 10,
` and plunger 21, but will be capable of being forced upwardly by the downward movement of the pedal 34, whereby the plunger 2l will be forced downwardly for causing the members 22 and 20 to be brought forcibly together.
On each side of the head 14 there are upwardly extending arms 36 formed integral therewith, said arms yhaving inwardly bent flanges 37 extending along the upper edges thereof between which the tool supporting tray and shelf 38 may be slidably positioned and held in place, as shown in Fig.l l.

l. ,A punch and press machine including a base having an upright tubular portion, a head having a tubular portion, a tubular support insertable in the tubular portions of said head and base for supporting the former on the latter, means for securing said tubular standard in position with respect thereto, a reciprocable plunger mounted in said head, an operatingrod extending through said tubular standard and the tubularportions of said headand base for actuating said plunger, and a lever fulcrumed on said base having one end connected With said rod for operating the same.y

4l. A punch and press machine including a head, a standard for supporting said head, an arm extending laterally from and formed integral with said head, a'- pair of upwardly and inwardly extending flanges formedalong the upper edges of said arm,
and a tray having its lower edges flared and adapted to be removably inserted between said flanges whereby said tray will be rigidly held and locked in supportedposition.
