PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN P. SCI-IAEFER, OF WEBSTER GROVES, MISSOURI.
CIGARETTE.
Application filed March 30, 1923. Serial No. 628,754.
ii t
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN P. SCI-IAEFER,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Webster Groves, in the county of Saint 5 Louis and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cigarettes, of which the following is a specification.
In carrying outthe present invention, it is my purpose to provide a cigarette wherein one end of the same is provided with an insert of ignitible material, for permitting the cigarette to be scratched upon a strip of abrasive with which the cigarette packages are to be equipped for consequently permitting of the lighting of this cigarette during high winds, or whenever a match is not available.
A further purpose of this invention is the provision of such a cigarette equipped with an insertion of ignitible material at one end that is of such a nature as will not substantially increase the cost of manufacture of cigarettes, the said ignitible in sert being incorporated directly into the cigarette during the manufacture of the same, the insert being extremely simple of construction, and inexpensive in 1nanufac ture.
To the attainment of the foregoing, the invention consists in the improvement hereinafter described and definitely claimed.
In the drawing:
Figure 1-is an elevation of the package containing my improved cigarette, the same being shown as equipped with a strip of abrasive material.
Figure 2--is a perspective of the cigarette per se, and
Figure 3is a fragmentary longitudinal section of the end of the cigarette carrying the ignitible insert.
Referring specifically to the drawing, 5 indicates a cigarette package of any desirable shape or construction, the same .being equipped preferably upon one of its sides with a strip of abrasive material. It is of course to be understood that I do not wish to limit myself to any particular form of cigarette package, or as to the point upon which the strip of abrasive mate-rial 6 may be placed, as in the future practice of the invention, this strip 'of abrasive material may be glued or otherwise secured to the front or rear face, or any one ofthe side edges of the package.
The cigarette 7 may be of the round or oval type, the same having incorporated at its front end, during the manufacture thereof between the paper constituting the cigarette and the tobacco 8, a short tubular or oval section of paper or other suitable material. Vithin the front end of this paper section 9 is a coating of ignitiblematerial, such as sulphur or the like 10, it of course being atonce apparent that when it is desired to light the cigarette, the end of the same carrying the ignitiblematerial It) is rubbed against the abrasive material 6 of the cigarette package 5, for consequently igniting the material 10, whereby the cigarette will be lighted by drawing upon the same.
In view of the above description, it will at once be apparent that I have provided a cigarette that will fully anticipate a long felt want, and although I have herein shown and described the preferred embodiment of the present invention, it is nevertheless to be understood that I do not limit myself to What is herein shown and described, and that minor changes may be made therein, without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention claimed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters-Patent is:
The combination with a cigarette having a wrapper and a filler, of a relatively short tubular element adapted to have its major portion inserted within one end of the wrapper between the wrapper and the filler and-retained within the wrapper by the filler, the remaining portion of said element projecting beyond the ends of the wrapper and filler, and an ignitible substance on the inner surface of said projecting portion of the element adapted when ignited to direct the fire inwardly for igniting the filler.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
JOHN P. SOHAEFER.
