To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, PAUL MUOHAJER, a citizen of the German Republic, residing at Charlottenburg, Germany, have invented certain-new and useful Improvements in Typewriters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a typewriter of the kind having a single key-lever whereby the carriage is moved and the types set and operated for printing.
The object of the invention is to produce a typewriter of a very simple construction, and the invention consists in the various details of such construction as hereinafter set forth and claimed. The operating lever, which is set relative to a type scale on the casing, is guided by a cam formed in the casing wall into the correct. printing position. The spacing and shifting levers are mounted on the same shaft, and so are the rocking elements whereby the printing and shifting movements are imparted to the printing wheel. These features, in addition to others which will be hereinafter described, are combined to form a very simple and easily operated typewriter.
Fig. 1 of the accompanying drawings represents a plan of the machine, and
Fig. 2, a vertical section of the same.
Fig. 3 is a vertical section at right. angles to Fig. 2, and
Fig. 4, a group of detail views of the type wheel fastening and of a modified form of ribbon holder.
The casing 1, which is drawn out of a single piece of metal, has a curved front. A type scale is provided on the top wall close to the front edge and behind it is a curved slot. through which an index 6 projects. The index is connected by means of an upright 5 to an arm 3 which moves in a horizontal plane about a pivot 4 connected to a bracket 2, the latter being fixed to the back wall of the casing. The pivot 4 also holds a fork 19 which is connected by means of a stay bolt. to the arm 3 so as to move in unison with the latter for setting the type wheel 23 in conformity with the index 6. For this purpose the fork 19 engages a pin 18 which is secured to a toothed sector 16. This sector is pivoted at 17 to a rocking plate 11 which holds the bearing for the type wheel spindle 14. The plate 11 also guides a pinion 15 which meshes with the sector and which is Serial No. 646,131.
slidably feathered on the spindle 14 so that the latter will berotated by the sector when the arm 3 is adjusted along the type scale. The rocking plate 11 is supported by means of upright arms 13 on a shaft 12 about which it rocks for applying the type wheel 23 to the platen 60. This operation is edect ed by means of a double-armed setting and printing lever 8 which is pivoted at 9 to a bracket on the arm 3 and which projects through a slot in the front wall 69 ofthe casing. The inner end 10 of the lever bears against and supports the rocking plate 11; the outer end is fitted with a key 63. The lever 8 is supported on the arm 3 so that it can be used for setting the latter before it is depressed for printing the set up type. In order to ensure correct printing position in all instances, the front wall 69 of the casing is formed with a combv between the teeth of 7 which the lever 8 is admitted. The teeth of the comb are pointed so as to guide the lever into the correct printing position even if the setting should be faulty.
The type wheel is fitted with several rows 5 of types.- The upper row is normally in printing position, and the other rows can be brought into printing position by an axial adjustment of the spindle 14 which is supported by a fork 37 secured to the shaft 12.
An arm 36 secured to the same shaft is pivotally connected to the shift lever 29 on which there are two keys 34 and 35. A depression of the key 34 turns the shaft 12 and raises the type wheel into position for printing from the second row of types. Th stem 32 of the key 34 is loosely connected to the lever 29 so that the latter can move independently of the same for raising the type wheel into the third printing position. This 9 adjustment is effected by means of the key 35 and its stem 33.
The pivot 27 which carries the shift lever 29 also carries the spacing lever 28. This lever is operated by the depression of the key 1 31 which is connected thereto by means of a stem 30. The lever 28 rocks a three-armed lever 39 which is pivoted at 38 to the rear wall of the casing. One arm of this lever is upright and carries a pawl 40 which is sup- 1 ported by a spring 41 tending to turn the pawl into engagement with a toothed rack formed on the paper carriage 45. When the lever 39 is rocked, in opposition to a spring 46, the pawl 40 strikes against a stop 43 1 'whichreleases the pawl from the rack.
- Upon the release of the lever 39, the pawl re-engages the rack and advancesthe car- 7 riage through one tooth space as the. lever 39 .47, connectedto the bracket 44, the teeth of the carriage rack; in each instance the position of the carriage,
is grestored by the spring 46 to the normal position. The stop 43 is formed on'a bracket 44 which is secured to the casing. A spring bears against and rectifies Thecarriage is also advanced by the rocking plate 11 ateach printing operation; For
this purpose an arm 42, connected to the plate 11, acts, by means of a pivoted screw 42 -and an adjustable collar 39, on the third arm of lever 59 so as to rock it in opposition to the spring 46. The carriage 45 is guided by means of a rd 51 in a split tube 52 mounted on the casing 1; It isalso supported by a roller 53 mountedon the bracket 44. There is a slot I position. At'the open end of the slot 54 there is in the cheek plate ofthe frame a slot 7 49;jtl1rough which the stoprcan be introduced and removed without a complete detachment of thenut 50. By this arrangement the removal of the carriage-is facilitated.
The line spacing is determined by a spring -58 having a tooth 58 which. bears against the end of the plateniroller 60 and snaps into equidistant notches 59 made in the roller.
A paper guide isprovided in the form of a curved blade spring 55. This spring .is connected'to' the carriage frame and fitted at its free end with --a roller 56 which bears against-the platen.

As the bridge piece 64 is rocked together with the plate 11 andasthe pawls 62 remain stationary, the engagi-ng pawl will cause the reels to be rotated.

The wheel is secured to the spindle by"v means of a curved blade spring 24 having a central elongated slot 26. The upper end of the spindle is formed with an elongated head .25 which is able to pass through the slot 26 in one position of the spring 24 and to interlock with the spring when the latter is turned through 90, as shown in big. 4. By this arrangement the type Wheel can easily be exchanged. v
To operate the machine, the key 68 is first moved horizontally until the index 6 registers with the sign to be printed and is then depressed for effecting the printing, one of the shift keys 34, 35 being depressed in advance in case of need. I
I claim: I
1. A typewriter of the character described comprising a casing provided with a type scale, an arm pivoted to the casing so that it can be adjusted in a horizontal plane, an index connected to said arm so that it can be set by means of the latter relative to the type scale, an operating lever pivoted to the arm so that it can move relative to the latter in a vertical plane and so that it can be used for setting the arm, a rocking plate arranged in said casing and supported by the operating lever so that it can be rocked by means of the latter, an axially and rotatably adjustable type wheel spindle carried by said plate so that it can be rocked thereby for printing, a toothed sector pivoted to said plate, a staybolt connecting the sector with said arm so as to transmit motion from one to'the other, a pinion feathered on the spindle and meshing with the sector so as to communicate rotation to the type wheel when thearm is adjusted, a comb formed in the casing wall so as to receive the operating lever between its teeth and correct the setting when the lever is depressed for printing a pivot pin, a shift lever arranged on said pin, means connecting the type wheel spindle with said adjusted thereby, a paper carriage, a spacing device for moving said carriage, connection between the rocking plate and the spacing device for operating the latter, a spacing lever arranged on said pivot pin, and connectionbetween the spacing lever and the spacing device for operating the latter. 1

A typewriter of the character described, comprising a casing which is drawn out of a single piece of metal and provided with a type scale, an arm pivoted to the casing so that it can be adjusted in a horizontal plane, an index connected to said arm so that it can be set by means of the latter relative to the type scale, an operating lever pivoted to the arm so that it can move relative to the latter in a vertical plane and so that it can be used for setting the arm, a rocking plate arranged in said casing and supported by the operating lever so that it can be rocked by means of the latter, an axially and rotatably adjustable type wheel spindle carried by said plate so that it can be rocked-thereby for printing, a toothed sector pivoted to said plate, a stay-bolt connecting the sector with said arm so as to transmit motion from one to the other, a pinion feathered on the spindle and meshing with the sector so as to communicate rotation to the type wheel when the arm is adjusted, a comb formed in the casing wall so as to receive the operating lever between its teeth and correct the setting when the lever is depressed for printing, a pivot pin,
a shift lever arranged on said pin, means connecting the type wheel spindle with said shift lever so that it can be axially adjusted thereby, a plurality of keys arranged on said shift lever so as to cause different angular adjustn'ients thereof, a spacing device, a paper carriage cooperating with said spacing device so as to be shifted thereby, connection between the rocking plate and the spacing device for operating the latter, a spacing lever arranged on said pivot pin, and connection between the spacing lever and the spacing device for operating the latter.
3. A typewriter of the character described, comprising a casing provided with a type scale, an arm pivoted to the casing so that it can be adjusted in a horizontal plane, an index connected to said arm so that it can be set by means of the latter relative to the scale, an operating lever pivoted to the arm so that it can move relative to the latter in a vertical plane and so that it can be used for setting the arm, a shaft mounted in the casing, a rocking plate arranged loosely on said shaft and supported by the operating lever so that it can be rocked by means of the latter, an axially and rotatably adjustable type wheel spindle carried by said plate so that it can be rocked thereby for printing, a toothed sector pivoted to said plate, means connecting the sector with said arm so as to transmit motion from one to the other, a pinion meshing with the sector and mounted on the spindle so as to communicate rotation to the type wheel when the arm is adjusted, means for correcting the setting of the arm automatically when the operating lever is depressed for printing, a pivot pin, a shift lever mounted on said pin and coupled to said shaft for rocking the same, a fork connected to said shaft and to the type wheel spindle so as to adjust the latter axially when the shaft is rocked, a paper carriage, a spacing device for moving said carriage, connection between the rocking plate and the spacing device for operating the latter, and a lever mounted on said pivot pin and connected to the spacing device for operating the latter.
l. In a typewriter of the character described, a drawn metal casing, a split tube supported by said casing, a paper carriage comprising a frame and a rod adapted to guide the frame in said tube, the carriage frame being provided with a longitudinal slot, a bracket connected to the casing, a roller mounted on said bracket and engaging the slot of the carriage frame for supporting the same, and a stud adapted to be adjusted along said slot and to be secured detachably to the frame for limiting the movement of the carriage by abutment against said bracket.
5. In a typewriter of the character described, a type wheel spindle having an elongated head, a disc arranged on said spindle as a support for the type wheel, and a spring having an elongated slot adapted to pass over said head in one position and to interlock with the same in another position of angular adjustment, the spring being adapted to hold the type wheel in position on the spindle when engagedby the spindle head.
