Description
,c. H. WENTZELL TIRE PUMP Filed Aug. 5 1923 Patented Uet. 1d, 1924.
CHARLES H. WENTLZELL, OF GREENSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
TIRE PUMP.
Application filed August 3, 1923. Serial No. 655,497.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that 1, CHARLES H. l i nnrznmi, citizen of the United States, residing at Greensburg, in the county of VVestmoreland and State oi Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tire Pumps, of which the follow ing is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved tire pump and seeks, among other objects, to provide a pump which will be characterized by ruggedness and simplicity of construction and wherein all of the valves employed will be mounted upon the pump piston.
The invention seeks, as a further object, to provide a pump wherein, should occasion so demand, the valves may be readily renewed. 7
And the invention seeks, as a still further object, to provide a pump wherein the pump piston employed will be held upon the piston rod and the valves retained assembled upon the piston by a single nut.
Other and incidental objects will appear hereinafter.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view through my improved pump.
Figure 2 is a detail sectional view through the piston.
Figure 3 is a sectional view on the line 33 of Figure 2, looking in the direction of the arrows, and
Figure 4 is a detail plan view of the valve retaining plate of the piston.
in carrying the invention into efiect, I employ a base provided with an upstanding annular flange 11 and threaded through the flange is an outlet nipple 12 to which is suitably attached a discharge hose 13. Threaded at its lower end into the flange 11 is a barrel M closed at its upper end by cap 15 threaded over the barrel and formed in said cap is an air inlet opening or passage 16. Slidable through the cap axially of the barrel is a piston rod 1'? equipped at its upper end with a handle 18 while near its lower end the rod is reduced to define an axial stud 19 at the base of which is an annular shoulder 20. Freely fitting over the stud to abut said shoulder is a piston 21 mounting rings 22 to cooperate with the barrel, and formed in the piston at opposite sides of the piston rod are vertical air passtuds 28 received in suitable sockets in the lower end of the piston centering the plate with respect thereto and formed in the plate at the lower end of each of the valve chambers is a plurality of openings or air passages 29. Threaded upon the stud 19 to abut the plate 27 is a nut EEO-clamping the piston against the shoulder of the piston rod and binding the retaining plate 27 against the lower end of the piston.
As will now be seen in view of the fore going, when the piston is raised, air in the upper end portion of the barrel 14 will flow downwardly through the passages 23 of the piston 21 into the lower end portion of the barrel below the piston. Consequently. when the piston is subsequently moved downwardly, the valves 26 will be shifted to engage the seats 25 for closing the passages 23 so that the air will be forced out through the outlet nipple 12 while a fresh supply of air will be drawn into the upper end portion of the barrel above the piston through the passage 16 or the cap 15.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
In a tire pump, a piston provided with an air passage therethrough and having sockets in its under side, the air passage being expanded at its lower end to form a valve chamber, a freely movable valve in said chamber controlling the How through said passage, and a retaining plate secured to the lower end of the piston and extending across the valve chamber to retain the valve therein, said plate being provided with openings to register with the valve chamber and being provided with studs to engage the sock ets in the piston.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
1 CHARLES H. l/VENTZELL. [Ls]
