Be it known that I, AXEL AUGUST Asr- LUND, a citizen of the United States residing at Auburn in the county of layuga and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Operating Valves; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. a
This invention relates to improvements in devices for operating valves and more particularly it relates to a device designed to operate the starting air valve of an internal combustion engine to relieve the cylinder pressure.
. The object of the invention is to provide a device of the character indicated of a simple mechanical structure which will operate' positively and with precision, while at the same time it will provide means to operate to balance the cylinder pressure.
The invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and combination of parts as hereinafter more particularly described. and claimed.
One sheet of drawings accompanies this specification, in which like reference characters indicate similar parts throughout.

The present invention involves subject matter previously described in my copending application, Serial Number 359,415, filed February 17 1920. It is part of a general improvement of the operating mechanism for a Diesel engine having in view the elimination, so far as possible, of manual operations and the provision of mechanism for effecting the various functions of starting, stopping and reversing such an engine both automatically and with precision in their proper sequence and order.
The present invention relates to the means and roller 16, while the other end of said lever is provided with means, to engage a.
cam" 9' operated from the engine shaft by any suitable means (not shown). The compressed air for starting the engine is supplied from a suitable reservoir (not shown) through a pipe 23 leading into a manifold pipe 22 which extends throughout the length of the. engine and is provided with connections 21 supplying the compressed air to each of the cylinder compressed air valves. The present invention illustrates the invention as applied to a single cylinder, but it will be readily understood that the unit. indicated can be multiplied as desired in the case of multiple cylinder engines.
The cam lever 1 is provided upon one side with a slot 2 adapted to receive member 4 which is pivoted against lever 1 adjacent one end as by a screw 10. Member 1 is'further provided with a journal hole adapted to receive eccentric 5 fixedly mounted upon a shaft 6. It will be noted that the slot 2 in lever 1 is made wider than member 4' and member 4 is normally placed against the upper face of slot 2 by means of spring 13 which is compressed between the upperv face of lever 1 and a nut 12 threaded upon stud 11 which is fixedly secured in member 1 passing freely through asuitable orifice in the upperpart of lever 1,.
The extension 8 of lever 1 which passes between the top of valve stem 18 and roller 16 is provided 'on its upper face with a hardened plate 14 having a cam face 15 directed toward the roller 16.
Lever 1 also carries a member 7 provided with a cam contacting roller 8, which meme her 7 is suitably secured to said member 1 so that the operationo-f cam 9 upon roller 8 will rock lever 1 upon eccentric '5 to opcrat valve 20.
In operation the rotation of shaft 6 and eccentric 5 from the position illustrated in Fig. 1 in a counter clockwise direction will operate first to elevate the entire lever 1 and then to carry the entire lever forward toward the cam 9 as illustrated in Fig. 2, thus drawing cam face upon the end 3 of lever 1 under roller 16 to depress valve stem 18' and open valve 20, as illustrated. This operation, it will be noted, raises roller 8 from cam 9, thus permitting the shifting of cam 9 to introduce another cam for the reverse operation of the engine, while the cylinder pressure is relieved by means of manifold 22 connecting the various cylinders.
lVith the eccentric 5 in the position illustrated in Fig. 1 and the cam 9 in contact with'roller S, valve would normally be open "for supplying starting air to the cylinder, but if the cylinder pressure exceeds that of th y starting air supply, it is not desirable that the valve should be opened and to avoid its opening under the circumstances, the valve 1 is flexed as previously described, spring 13 being compressed to substantially balance the cylinder pressure so that when the cylinder pressure equals or is in excess of starting air pressure, valve lever 1 will be held in its elevated position by valve stem 18 controlled by the cylinder pressure operating upon valve head 20 and cam 9 will operate merely to flex member 1 relative to valve lever 1, as illustrated in Fig. 1. Obviously if the cylinder pressure in the situation illustrated in Fig. 1 is less than the expansive force of spring 13, valve lever 1 will be forced by spring 13 to seat against the upper face of member 1, thus opening valve 20.
Various modifications in the precise form and arrangement of the parts will readily suggest themselves to those skilled in the art, but all withinthe scope of the present invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, 1 claim:
1. A valve opening mechanism for the relief of cylinder pressure comprising in combination a valve having a reciprocating stem, guide mounted above the top of the valve stem and spaced therefrom, an eccene trically mounted cam lever for operating the valve stem having one end provided with a cam face, said cam faced end of i the the lever being located between the top of the valve stem and the guide so that the operation of the eccentric mounting of said lever will draw said face under the guide to depress the valve stem.
2. n. valve opening mechanism for the relief of cylinder pressure comprising in combination a valve having a. reciprocating stem, a roller mounted above the top of the valve stem and spaced therefrom, an cccentri'cally mounted cam lever for operating the valve stem having one end provided with a cam face, saidxcain faced end of lever being located between the top of the valve stem and the roller so that the operation of the eccentric mounting of said lever will draw said cam face under the roller to depress the valve stem.
3. A valve opening mechanism comprising a cam lever in two parts, one part having a slot in one side, the other part being narrower than said slot and adapted to seat therein, said last mentioned part being eccentrically mounted and adapted to contact with a valve operating cam, and tension means for holding said parts in flexed relation.
4. A valve opening mechanism for the relief of cylinder pressure comprising in combination a valve having a reciprocating stem, a roller mounted above the top of the valve stem and spaced therefrom, an eccentrically mounted cam lever in two parts for operating the valve stem, one of said parts having a slot in one side and a cam faced end, said cam faced end being located between the top of the valve stem and the roller so that the operation of the eccentric mounting of said lever will" draw said cam 'face under the roller to depress the valve AXEL AUGUST ASPLUN'D;
