Description

I Sept. 30 1924.
A. MADLAND VETERINARY OBSTETRICAL INSTRUMENT Filed April 5. 1923 Patented Sept. 30, 1924.
PATENT OFFICE.
ARNE MADLAND, or MQKENZIE, NORTH DAKOTA. I
VETERINARY OBSTETRIGAL INSTRUMENT.
Application fi1ed April 5, 1923.
T all whom it may come m:
Be it known that I, ARNE MADLAND, a citizen of the United States, residing at McKenzie, in the county of Burleigh and State of North Dakota, have invented cer tain new and useful Improvements in Veterinary Obstetrical Instruments, of which 7 the following is a specification.
My invention relates to veterinary obstetrical instruments.
An important object of the invention is to provide an instrument of the above mentioned character, adapted for engagement with the lower jaw of a young pig, for aiding in delivery, with the least liability of injury to the pig.
A further object of the invention is the provision of means whereby the jaws of the device may be locked in the closed position, whereby the instrument may be securely at tached to the jaw of the pig, without liability of slipping therefrom until properly removed therefrom.
Other objects and advantages of the inr vention will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of an instrument embodying my invention,
Figure 2 is a plan view of the same, and,
Figure 3 is a transverse section taken on line 33 of Figure 2.
In the drawings, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 5 designates a pair of arms, having flattened portions 6 at their-forward ends, which are arranged in slidable relation and are pivotally connected at 7, so that they are adapted to cross each other.
The arms 5 diverge rearwardly, as shown,
' and have parallel portions or extensions 8,
bent inwardly at their rear ends, providing rearwardly converging shoulders 9, carrying the loops 10, constituting the handles of the instrument.
The numeral 11 designates a locking element or link, which is permanently carried by the rear ends of the arms 5, within the loops or handles 10, and are adapted to slide upon the shoulders 9, on to the parallel portions or extensions 8, and when upon these Serial No. 630,160.
extensions, serve to lock the arms 5 against opening movement.
One flattened end 6 is provided with a laterally projecting shank 12, preferably integral therewith, and this shank carries a jaw 13, integral therewith, and arranged at approximately a right angle to the shank 12. The shank 12 is arranged at an obtuse angle tothe flattened portion 6. The other flattened portion 6 is provided with an extension 14, arranged at substantially a straight angle with relation thereto, and this extension 14 is provided with an upwardly projecting jaw 15, disposed at substantially a right angle to the extension or shank 14. The jaw 15 has its forward end 16 blunt and rounded.
A young pig has no front teeth, and there is a depression in the lower jaw where the front teeth grow. This permits of the jaw 13 being passed into the mouth of the pig and properly engaging with the lower jaw. The jaw 13 also has its lower face curved in cross section, and the jaw is relatively long and is designed primarily to properly fit the fleshy portion of the lower j aw of the pig. The lower jaw 15 of the instrument is adapted to engage the exterior of the lower jaw of the pig, the fleshy portion thereof, between the sides of the jaw bone. This jaw 15 having a blunt end, will not tend to puncture the flesh of the pig or otherwise injure the animal. It is obvious that when the link 11 is placed upon the parallel extensions or portions 8, the instrument may be locked to the lower jaw of the pig, against accidental displacement.
It is to be understood that the form of my invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as a preferred example of the same, and that various changes: in the shape, size, and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of my invention, or the scope of the subjoined claim.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
An instrument of the character described comprising, a pair of pivoted arms, said arms being provided at their rear ends with spaced substantially parallel portions and inclined portions rearwardly of the parallel portions, said inclined portions being continued in "forwardly extending loops having their ends terminated adjacent to the parallel portions, a link carried by the rear ends lower j aw of the pig, a shank (Fll'l'lfll by the of said arms and adapted for movement otherarm and projecting forwardly lllLlt' upon said parallel portions for locking the of and provided with an inwardly project-- arms against opening movement, the foring jaw extending toward the first named 5 Ward movement of the link heing limited by jaw and having a blunt end to engage with 15 contact with the forward ends of'saidloops, the exterior of the jaw of: the pig without a shank carried by the for-wardend of: one liability of puncture. arm and projecting outwardly and laterally In testimony whereo'l I allix my signature. therefrom and provided; with a longitudinally extending jaw to engage Within the ARNE MA DLAND.
