GEORGIA, ASSIGNOR T EMPIBE PRI 'NTING EORGIA, A GORIPORATION OF GEORGIA.
BOX.
Application flld Hauch 6, 1923. Serial N0. 623,149.
T0 all whom z't mag concern:
B0 it known tbat I, FERDINAND M. KAFF- MAN. a citizen of the United States, resid1ng a1 Atlanta, in the county of Fulton and State ol Goorgia, have invented cltain new and usolul Improve1nents in Boxes, of which tho l'ollowing is a specification.
The invention relates t0 boxes, and has as an object tbe Provision of a box whioh Will be cheap t0 manufacture and whioh is provided With a handle in such a mannor as t0 1nake the box oonvenient to cany and wherein tbe handle may be readily folded so as not to project beyond the general cou- 15 tour of tbe box. A furtber object of the invention is the -provisidn 01: 214 box which is useful for delivery, sbipping, 01 carrying purposes.
Illustrative embodiments 015 tbe invention are sbown in the accompanying drawings, in whicb Figure 1 is a prspective view;
Figure 2 is a horizontal oross section of the lo0x of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a plan view of a blank from tbe side wbicb is inside tbe box wben folded;
Figure 4 is a horizontal cross section sbowing a modified form of joint.
As sbown in Figures 1 to 3 inclusive, tbe box comprises vertical sides 10, 11, 12 and 13, a bottom 14, and cover flap s 15 and 16.
Handles are oonveniently provided, as shown, by flaps 17, 18, extending upwardly from the sides 10 and 11, said flaps being oqual in length to tbe flaps 15, 16 and provided With apertures 19, 20 for reception of tbe fingers and the tbumb, respectively, of the user. If desired, of course, the fingers 1nay be run tbrough both apertures wbilo bandling the box. Tbe bottom of the box is sbown as forrned from. tabs 21, 22, 23, 24 of equal length whicb, vvben the box is made up are folded inwardly and may be secured by means of pasted upon the exterior.
A conveniently strong and cbeap metbod of fastening tbe vertical sides of the box together is sbown in Figs. 1 and 2, comprising a tab 26 folded within tbe side 13 and se- 50 cured tbereto as by means of clinching staples 27.
a binding strip 25 The length of the flaps 15 and 16 determines one transverse dimension, in this instance tl1e narrower transverso lixnension, of the lo0x as Will be apparent l'ro1n a cousideration of Figure 1 and thu lvngth of tbe flaps 17 and 18 is equal to tho sai l transverse dimonsion as Fignre 2 bost illuslrates. As a r'esult, the flaps 17 and 18 'may be folded in superposed relation on tbe flaps 15 and 16 01 top of tbe box without projection beyond tbe sides of the box, wbich gives extreme compactness to facilitate packing or stor- 1ng. In tbe f01n1 0f box sbown in Fig. 4, tbe sides 10 and 13 ar'e merely caused to meet at tbe corner and a strip 28 is folded thereabout and pasted to tbe tWo sides.
The box is preferably made of a light bulstrong material, such as corrugated board, 01 in factof any k ind of paper board pro- Vided Witb srnooth surfaoes, and is very desirable fo1 carrying breakables such as eg'gs or bottles.
It will be Seen tbat the handles or flaps 17, 18 whon bald in one band by tbe carrier, perform the double function 0f supporting the box and contents and also of holding tbe flaps 15, 16 in closed position. Tbe length of tbe tabs 21, 22, 23 and 24 being equal and tbat of 15, 16, 17 and 18 also being equal to eacb otl1er, t be blank from wbich tb box is formed is substarltially a 1ectangle wbereby little material is wasted, none in the form 0f Fig. 4.
I clain1:
A box formed from a blank substantimlly rectangular in outline and oomprising acentral 'portion baving bottom-form'ng tabs projecting from one sideibereof, an flaps projecting from tbe opposite side tbereof, said fiaps being of a length substantially equal to the corresponding transverse dimension. of tbe box, one pair of' tbe flaps overlappin when the box is closed, and com pletely clos1ng tbe upper end of tbe box, the remaining pair' of flaps having band admitting apertures, whereby be box may be carried by a band of a carrier and said first narnod flaps hold in closed position.
