Be it known that I, LoUIs E. GRAY, a citizen of the United States, residing Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Plasterers Reversible Float, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in plasterers and cement workers floats.

One of the objects of my invention is to provide a float in which the handle is readily detachable from the float to permit the reversing of the working surface of the float, smoothing ofv the surfaces of the float down when they become worn or out of true and in general to provide an improved device of this character which may be easily manufactured and readily assembled.

For the purpose. of disclosing my invention I have illustrated one embodiment thereof in the accompanying drawings in which Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a float embodyingmy invention, and

Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view thereof.

In the embodiment of my invention the handle 1 and the blade 2 are separable to permit the reversal of the blade and to permit the removal of the blade from the handle for truing, etc. The handle 1 includes the grip 3 which is secured on the removable mount 4. This mount preferably comprises an elongated plate formed of any material, preferably however of aluminum for lightness, the edges of which are doubled upon themselves for stiffening. One end of the plate is widened at 5 and this widened portion is provided with a down turned hook comprising the vertical portion 6 and the inturned lip 7. A similar hook 8 is mounted upon a separable plate 9 which telescopes upon the opposite end of the mounting plate and is provided on its upper surface with a pair of forwardly extending spaced apart lugs 10. Arranged between these lugs is an eccentric 11 having a grip 12 and pivoted to the mounting plate by means of pivot screw 13 whereby, by rotating the eccentric the plate 9 will be given a longitudinal movement on the mounting plate to advance or retract the hook S relatively to the hook on the opposite end of the mounting.

Grip 3 is secured on the upper side of the mounting 4 by means of screws 14 which extend through the separator plate 15 and into the hand grip. The ends of this separator plate are free so that they may be adjusted towards and away from the blade by means of adjusting screws 16..

The blade 2 as is used in tools of this character comprises a smoothed, fiat, wooden blade the opposite faces of which provide working surfaces. This blade at its ends is provided with grooves 17 which are formed at a point equidistant from the working surfaces .of the blade. In assembly the eccentric 11 rotated to retract the hook 9 from the hook at the opposite end of the mounting plate. The mounting plate is then slipped over the blade and by rotating the eccentric 11 the inturned lips of the two hooks are forced into the grooves on the blade securely connecting the blade and handle together whereby the two parts hecome a unit.

The above arrangement permits of the ready removal of the blade and permits of the reversal of the blade. It frequently happens that in devices of this character the wooden blade becomes warped and the edges of the lower surface battered. By reversing the blade a new surface is presented and the warped blade is straightened. Furthermore the blade may be readily removed for the purpose of planing to resmooth the surface thereof and the groove and lips provide a ready means for the attachment over the surface of a carpet when using the float for rough or sand finish. The separator plate provides a means for maintaining a tight fit between the removable handle and its mounting plate and the blade.

After the surface or surfaces of the blade have become worn or the blade has been made thinner by planing, when the mounting plate is secured on the blade the ends of the separator plate may be moved towards the blade by means of the adjusting screws so that lost motion between the mounting and the blade will be prevented.

I claim as my invention:

1. In a plasterers float the combination with a reversible blade having its opposite faces each forming a working surface, of a handle the 13ft and means detachably gripping opposite edges of the blade for securing said handle to the blade and permit the use of either face of the blade.

2. In a plasterers float the combination with a reversible blade having its opposite faces each forming a working surface, of a handle therefor including a pair of hooks arranged to engage over opposite edges of the blade and removably secure the handle thereto.

3. In a plasterers float the combination with a. reversible blade having its opposite faces each forming a working surface having recesses in opposite edges thereof, of a handle for said blade including a pair of hooks arranged to engage in said recesses to removably secure the handle in position upon said blade.

4. In a plasterers float the combination with a. reversible blade having its opposite faces each forming a working surface, of a handletherefor including a strap having engaging members for the edges of the blade and means for contracting said members upon the edges of the blade to cause them to grip the blade and reinovably secure the handle in position thereon.

5. In a plasterers float the combination with a reversible blade having its opposite faces, each forming a workingsurface, of a handle therefor including a strap provided with means for engaging the edges of the float and means for moving one of said engaging means relatively to the other to clamp the same upon the blade and locking said engaging means in clamped position.

6. In a plasterers float the combination with a blade having its opposite faces each forming a working surface having grooves in its opposite edges equidistant from the blade surfaces, of a handle including a strap having hooks arranged to engage in said grooves and means on said strap movable into engagement with the upper surface of said blade for maintaining a rigid relation between the handle and float.

7. In a plasterers float the combination with a blade having its opposite faces each forming a working surface of a handle therefor including a strap formed of a pair of telescoping members each havin a hook arranged to engage an edge of tie blade and means for moving said members relatively to clamp the hooks into engagement with the blade and locking the same in clamped position.

8. A removable handle for plasterers floats comprising a grip, a securing plate for said grip having at one end a float engaging hook, a telescoping member at the other end of said plate having a float engaging hook and provided with spaced apart lugs and an eccentric cam secured to said plate and operating against said shoulders for moving said member telescopically on said plate.

9. A plasterei' s float comprising an elongated blade both sides of which provide working surfaces and having an elongated transverse groove in each of its opposite ends to which the working surfaces are symmetrical and which receive a. handle securing means and permit the blade to be used with either surface as a working surface.
