Description

Patented Sept. 30, 1924.
UNITED STATES IOHN ZIELINSK, HARLFED, CONNECTICUT.
ROTARY BRUSH.
Application filed, February le', 1924.. Serial No. 592,747.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, JOHN H. ZTELrNsKi, a citizen of Poland, residing at Hartford, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rotary Brushes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in rotary brushes of the motor driven, self-contained type.
An important object of the invention is to form a rotary brush and its driving means into a single, compact unitary structure.
A further object of the invention is to provide novel means for handling the unitary structure referred to above.
A further object of the invention is to provide a novel brush construction and means for mounting and connecting the same upon a motor shaft. p
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same,
Figure 1 is a side elevational View of the device embodying this invention,
Figure 2 is a top plan view of the device shown in Fig. 1,
Figure 3 is a longitudinal, substantial central sectional view, partly in elevation, of the apparatus shown in Figs. 1 and 2,
Figure 4 is an end elevational view of the front end of the apparatus, and
Figure 5 is an elevational view of the rear end of the apparatus.
In the drawing, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of this invention, the numeral 5 designates the housing of an electric motor which is employed for driving the brush frame that will be described in detail at a later point. Projecting from opposite ends of the motor housing 5 is the armature shaft 6 which projects from the casing 5 a greater distance at the front end of the structure than at the rear end.
Suitably keyed to the longer projecting end of the armature shaft 6 is a hub 7 that is provided with an outwardly projecting annular flange 8 at its inner end. It will be noted that the motor housing 5 is of sub; stantially cylindrical shape.
In Fig. 3 there is best illustrated a brush frame 9 which is of substantially barrel formation or having a greater diameter at its longitudinal center than at the opposite ends. The forward end of this barrel.- shaped brush frame 9 is provided with an inwardly directed annular flange 1() which is rigidly connected with the flange 8 carried by the hub 7 by means of the screws 11. The rear end 9a of this barrel-shaped frame 9 is open and has a diameter greater than the diameter of the motor casing 5. It will be seen by this construction that the barrelshaped brush frame 9 is entirely supported by the flange 8 carried by the hub 7 which is suitably keyed to the armature shaft 6. The said brush frame is illustrated as being spaced from the cylindrical motor easing 5 at all points. A guard plate 12 of arcuate formation in cross-section, is shown as being provided, at its rear transverse edge, with depending, converging legs 13 which are secured at their outer ends to the rear end of the motor casing 5 by the screws 111. The front transverse edge of the guard plate 12 is illustrated in Figs. 1, 3 and 4 as being provided with depending, converging legs 15 having an apertured ring 16 formed integrally with the outer ends of said legs 15. This apertured ring is shown in Fig. 8 as being loosely mounted upon the longer end of the armature shaft 6. A handle strap 17 is illustrated as being secured to the upper face of the guard plate 12 and extending transversely of the same. Positioned be tween the outer end of the hub 7 and the inner face of the apertured ring 16 is a spacer or washer 18 while positioned outwardly of the outer face of the apertured ring 16 is a second spacer or washer 19. These washers or spacers 18 and 19 and the apertured ring 16 are retained in their respective positions upon the armature shaft 6 by means of a collar 20 which is suitably keyed to the eXtreme outer end portion of the armature shaft 6.
The outer surface of the barrel-shaped brush frame 9 is illustrated as being provided with brush bristles or other suitable material 21. It is to be understood that these brush bristles or other suitable brush material may be secured to the barrel-shaped brush frame 9 in any desired manner.
In Figs.v 1, 3 and 5, there are illustrated electric wires 22 which are projecting outwardly of the rear end of the motor cas- 'ing The motor is intended to be supplied With electricity through these Wires.
lt is believed that the construction and operation of this rotary brush will be apparent from the above detail description. It might be Well to note, however, that the operator et' the brush may insert his hand through the loop of the handle strap 17 and that after the electricity has been turned on. the armatureV shaft 6 will be caused to rotate and will carry the barrel-shaped brush trame With it. It is not intended to liniit the use of this brush to any particular Work :tor any desired torni ot brush material. may be secured to the outer face ot the brush trame 9' for the purpose of adapting` the apparatus to be used for shiningshoes, brushing clothes, Washing Windows or Woodwork. scrubbing floors, etc.
It is to be understood that the torm of this invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as a preferred example of the same, and that such changes in the shape, size, and arrangement of parts may be resorted to Without departing from the spirit of the invention as fall Within the scope o't the subjoined claims.
'Having thus described the invention, I claim l. ln a rotary brush of the type described, an electric motor including a cylindrical casing and an armature shaft projecting from one end thereon a barrel-shaped brush Atrame loosely encircling said motor casing, means connecting one end of said brush frame to the projecting end of said shaft, a guard plate, means rigidly connecting one end ot said guard plate to one end of the motor casing, means loosely connecting the other end ot said guard plate to the projeeting` end ot said armature shaft. and a handle strap carried by said guard plate for permitting the rotary brush to be manually operated.
2. In a rotary brush of tht` type described. au electric motor including a cylindrical casing and an armature shaft projecting from one end thereof. a hub having an annular outwardly projecting flange keyed to the projecting end of said armature. shaft, a barrel-shaped brush frame loosely encircling said motor casing and having an annular inwardly directed flange termed at one end thereof connected to the flange carried by the said hub, and means rigidly connected to said motor casing and loosely connected to the projecting end of said armature shaft for permitting the rotary brush to be manually handled.
In testimony whereof I atiix my signature.
JOHN H. ZIELINSKI.
