Patented Sept. Bill, 1924-.
EZRA. H. GANNAD'Y, 01E KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI.
CURBING.
Application filed August 21, 1922.
1 '0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, EZRA H. CANNADY,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and the State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Curbing, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in curbing.
One of the objects of my invention is to provide a curbing that is strong, durable, not liable to get out of order, which is cheap to make and eilicient in operation.
A. further object of my invention is the provision of a metal guard plate arranged to protect the supports there-for from injury by passing vehicles.
The novel features of my invention are hereinafter fully described and claimed.
20 In the accompanying drawing, which illustrates my invention,
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of two of my improved curbing guard plates, and one of the members, which is adapted to connect them. i
Fig. 2 is a plan view of a section of my improved curbing, of the type employing a concrete support tor the metal guard plates.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged vertical sectional view on the line 3-8 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a longitudinal sectional View of two guard sections and the member which connects their barrels, taken on the plane of the line i l of Fig. 3.
5 is a modification showing a form in which the guard plates are supported by vertical bars set in concrete.
Fig. 6 is a vertical sectional view on the line 6-6 oi? Fig. 5.
Similar reference characters designate similar parts ot' the dii'l'erent views.
1 designates a straight rolled steel plate having its upper portion formed into a longitudinal horizontal barrel 2 disposed at the outer side of the plate. The fiat body portion of the plate is disposed at the outer side of a concrete curbing 4 in which are imbedded bolt heads 5, the bolts being disposed horizontally and extending through the holes 3 respectively of the plate 1. Each Serial No. 583,133.
bolt has mounted on it a nut 6 which bears against the outer side of the plate 1, and which is disposed under the barrel 2, and is thereby protected from injury by passing vehicles running on the roadway'i'.
It will be noted that the longitudinal edge oi the barrel 2 bears against the outer side of the fiat body portion, thus affording rigid support for the barrel.
Tightly fitted in the adjacent ends of each adjacent pair of barrels 2 is a cylindrical connecting member 8 which may be held in place by two rivets 9, which respectively extend through the barrels 2 and through the member 8, as shown in Fig. 4L.
The upper sides of the barrels 2 are preferably flush with the upper side 01 the concrete curbing 4.
At each corner of the concrete curbing 4 is provided a right-angled metal guard plate 10 provided at its upper portion with a right-angled barrel 11 having its ends respectively abutting against the adjacent ends of straight guard plates 1, to which the plate 10 is connected by members 8, already described.
The plate 10 is provided with bolt holes 12 corresponding in function to the holes 3.
For use in driveways as side guards for vehicles passing along the drive way, the guard plates 1 may be mounted, as shown in Figs. 5 and 6, on bolts 12 mounted in the upper ends of vertical bars 13, the lower ends of which are mounted in the concrete driveway 14:. Nuts 15 are respectively mounted. on the bolts 12 and are disposed below the barrels 2 and bear against the bars 13.
The barrel 2 of the guard plate serves the triple function of protecting the concrete curbing 4, of stiffening the guard plate 1, and protecting the nuts and bolts from injury by passing vehicles.
I do not limit my invention to the structure shown and described, an many modifications, within the scope of the appended claim, may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention.
What I claim is In a curbing, a suitable support, bolts mounted therein, a guard plate having a portion above said bolts, and nuts mounted flat body portion through which said bolts on said bolts and bearing against the outer extend, the upper portion of the plate being side of said body portion. 10 formed into a horizontal longitudinal bar- In testimony whoreoi I have signed my 5 rel which extends outwardly beyond said name to this specification.
bolts and the longitudinal edge of which bears against the outer side of the flat body EZRA H. CANNADY.
