REGEPTACLE-HOLDING DEVICE.
Application filed September 29, 1922. Serial No. 591,24 4.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that BASCOME E. CoLLINs, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Cainesville, in the county of Harrison and State of Missouri, has invented new and useful Improvements in Receptacle-Holding Devices, of which the following is a specification.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple and efficient receptacle holding or locking means for use in connection with vehicles such as cars, wagons, etc., for engaging and securing cans, buckets and receptacles or vessels of various kinds in position therein or thereon against vibration and displacement by reason of the motion of the vehicle in transportation; and with this object in View the invention consists in a construction and combination of parts of which a preferred embodiment is shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a view of a holder embodying the invention arranged in the operative position on a vehicle, the same being shown in engagement with a typical form of vessel or receptacle.
Figure 2 is a detail side View, and
Figure 3 is a detail plan View of the holder.
The holder consists essentially of a bracket 10 provided with attaching ears 11 for engagement by screws 12 or equivalent means whereby the same may be fastened securely to the side wall or seat riser 13 of a vehicle such as a wagon or car, the bracket being in the form of a yoke to provide spaced side members 14, and a holding lever 15 fulcrumed as at 16 to the bracket and provided with laterally spaced jaws 17 for engagement with the edge of a receptacle or vessel 18. I
In the illustrated embodiment of the invention the lever is provided with forwardwhich bear respectively against the side members 14 of the bracket and are united to form a depending loop 21 with which is connected an actuating spring 22 anchored at, its upper end to the cross piece 23 of the bracket, said spring extending on a line adjacent to the vertical plane of the pivot 16 so as to exert its tension on a line either in rear of or in front of said pivot according to the position of the lever, and therefore, in such a relation with the pivot of the lever as to hold the latter in either its vessel engaging or vessel releasing position as indicated respectively in full and dotted lines in Figure 2. The spring in other words is arranged in eccentric relation with the pivot of the lever and is adapted to occupy a position on either side of the plane thereof for yieldingly holding the lever in either of its adjusted positions. When in its operative position the lever is yieldingly held depressed at its forward or jaw carrying terminal so as to bear firmly upon the top or edge of a vessel or receptacle to be held thereby, and to insure the efioiency of the holding actionthe jaws are preferably of inverted V-form as indicated in engagement with the edge of the vessel wall or side. To release the vessel so that it may be removed it is only necessary to raise the end of the lever sufliciently to throw the line of strain of the actuatingspring to the front side of the plane of the pivot 16, and when a vessel is to be clamped in position it is only necessary after properly loeating the vessel to press the free end of the lever downward until the line of strain of the actuating spring passes the plane of the pivot 16 whereupon the jaws will be yieldingly depressed to engage and hold the vessel.
A device of the type indicated is of marked utility in transporting milk cans or like vessels which ordinarily are loosely positioned on the bottom of a car or wagon body and which by reason of the motion and jolting of the vehicle are subject to displacement.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new and useful is 'A. device for holding and locking a receptacle upon a. vehicle body comprising a U-shaped bracket having oifset end portions adapted to be attached to the body, a holding lever fulcrumed between the sides of the bracket and having diverging inner and outer end portions, the outer end portions being adapted to resiliently engage the edge of the receptacle, a loop depending from the inner diverging end portions of the arm and located under the intermediate portion of the bracket, and a spring located within the bracket and having one end attached to the intermediate portion of the bracket and its opposite end attached to the intermediate portion of the loop whereby the intermediate portion of the spring may swing trans- Versely across the fulcrum point of the arm as the arm is rocked upon the fulcrum point.
In testimony wherof he affixes his signature.
BASCOME E. COLLINS.
