Apis-iic'iioii anni March 7, 192i, siii no. fiscala.
To aZZ whom it may concern.' y f Be it known that I, AE; Encina- 'rom a vcitizen yof the United States, and a reside-itof Kankakemin the county of Kanf kakeevand State of Illinois,`mhave invented certain new and useful Imljroveinents in Stone-Surfacing Apparatus', Vofnwhich the following is a full, clear, and exact specification. y y l ,y ,y
My invention is concerned with stone surfacing tools, and similar devices, where a pneumatic hammer is employedy andV in its operation produces dust and clippings of any character that A,can be .moved pneumatically, and it consists' mainly iii a novel combination of elements wherein a funnel or nozzle is placed adjacent where the tool is working and is connected by a pipe with an exhaust pipe from the hammer so that the exhaust from the cylinder will create a suction in the tube leading from the nozzle to draw the dust into the nozzle, through its pipe and into a discharge pipe through which the exhaust escapes carrying the dust with it to a point where it cannot harm the workman.
To illustrate my invention, I annex hereto a sheet of drawings in which the same reference characters are used to designate identical parts in all the figures, of which- Fig. l is a side elevation of an apparatus embodying my invention;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged perspective view of a nozzle which I employ in connection with the apparatus; and 4 Fig. 3 is a detail in section on line 3--3 of Fig. l.
In carrying out my invention, I have shown it as applied to a pneumatic surfacing tool a having the customary supporting rollers 77 and guide rollers c co-operating with the track rail Z adjustably secured on the vertical standard e by any desired means. The cylinder of the pneumatic hammer is provided with the customary air supply pipe f and with an exhaust pipe g extending from the exhaust port of the hammer, as seen, and terminating in the dust discharging pipe 71 which preferably extends out through a window and is guided by the roller c mounted on the frame of the rail CZ, as seen in Fig. 3. The end of the pipe ZL is provided with a T y', the horizontal ends of which are connected to the pipes Zt and g and the lower end of which is connected to the `flexible tuhe it, which has its lower end connected tol the nozzle Z, which, as seen, has the flaring end with the opening widened at the center las seenin Fig. 2. To support this nozzle at the proper elevation relative to the end ofthe reciprocating tool ym, I preferably` form a boss n on the upper surface thereof/in which boss is secured the rod @which extends up through an aperture in theflange secured on the head of the cylinder of the hammer, where itis held in placeby the thumb nut gi, as shovvn. yThe tool kprovided with' ay suitable washer r which prevents the dustbeing blown away frdiri the nozzle Z by 'any downward leakage of the compressed air from the cylinder.
The operation of the device will be readily apparent:
As the tool fm, reciprocates under ,the strokes of the piston s in the cylinder, the exhaust from the cylinder is shot out through the pipe Q into the pipe ZL, creating a suction therethrough which draws the air with the dust from the tool into the nozzle Z, up through the pipe k and out through the pipeh in a manner which will be readily understood. I have found that with my apparatus, substantially all of the dust from the tool can be removed, thus making it very desirable in the protection afforded to the operator.
While I have shown and described my invention in the form which I at present consider best adapted to carry out its purposes, it will be understood that it is capable of modications and that I do not desire to be limited in the interpretation of the following claims except as may be necessitated by the state of the prior art.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentof the United States is:
1. In an apparatus operated by compressed gas, the combination with an engine cylinder having an exhaust pipe leading therefrom, of a piston in the cylinder, a tool operated by the piston, a suction nozzle adjacent the working end of the tool and in use freely open to the air, a flexible pipe leading from the nozzle into which the exhaust pipe opens to create a draft therethrough, suckingair into the nozzle and adjustable means for supporting the nozzle.
2. In an apparatus operated by compressed gas, the combination with a supporting frame having a horizontal track har, of an engine cylinder having an exhaust pipe leading therefrom and mounted to travel on the track bar, a roller on the fra-me, a pipe parallel to the track and resting on the roller and having the exhaust pipe opening through one end thereof to create a draft therethrough, a piston in the cylinder,- a tool operated by the piston, a suction nozzle adjacent the Working end of the tool, and a branch pipe leading from the nozzle into the parallel pipe and secured to the same, and means for supporting the branch pipe from the engine cylinder.L
l 3. ln an apparatus operated by compressed the combination With a supporting frame having a horizontal track bar, of an engine cylinder having an exhaust pipe leading therefrom and mounted to travel on the track bar, a roller on the frame, a pipe parallel to the track and resting on create a draft therethrough, a piston in the cylinder, a tool operated by the piston, a
the roller and having the exhaust pipe opening through one end thereof to suction nozzle adjacent the 'Working end of the tool, a branch pipe leading from the nozzle into the parallel pipe and secured to the Vsame, a rod secured at its lower end to the nozzle and having its threaded upper end extended through an apertured lug on the engine, and a nut on the rod for the purpose described.
4. ln an apparatus operated by com pressed gas, the combination with an engine cylinder, of a reciprocating tool extending therefrom, means at the Working end of the tool to collect and carry away the dust formed thereby, and a shield carried by the tool and serving to deflect any air leaking from the cylinder toward the Working end of the tool from reaching said Working end and scattering the dust.
In Witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and afXed my seal, this first day of March A. D. 1921.
HARVEY E. EDGINGTON. [Ls] Vitnesses I V. S. ELLIS, BnuNincu L. KLonU'roHnR.
