Preferf ably, a tubular' tongue :21; extends'outwardly from Lthe `frame and terminates 'in ay coupling 22suchgasa hook or the like, bywhich it may be;attached tovja tractor or ,a draft rigging of a motor bywhichthe road worker istobedrawnfy 11 i d Thearrn .23,ofythefbellcrank lever 10 has its end `extending intoa socket 24 of a plate 25 attachedto the standard 16,and bythe a fragment of yoneofthe blades associated" manipulation of vthe bell crank lever, 'the frame is elevated or lowered with respect to the axle 5, the bell crank lever forming the support for the frame at one side of the machine, and there being like supporting means at the opposite side thereof. `A worm 26 is suitably journaled in the frame, and Vis in mesh with a worm wheel 14, the said worm 26 being mounted on a shaft with the beveled pinion 27, which beveled pinion 27 is engaged by 'a beveledpinion 28 on a shaft 29 by which the worm may be rotated in either direction to operate the worm wheel and impart movement to the frame, as indicated. A hand wheel 30 on the shaft may bemanipulated by an operator occupyingthe seat 3l andhence the frame may be elevated or lowered to regulate the support of the rear end of the scraper, as will presently appear. The shaft 29 is rotatable in a bearing .32 on a beam 33 which is elevated with respect to the lower beams of the frame, and there is a beam 34 in front of the first mentioned elevated beam which constitutes a support for the bearing 35 of a shaft 36 having a hand wheel 37. A vertically disposed shaft 38 is journaled in the frame and it has a wormv 39 thereon and a beveled pinion `40 l engaged by a pinion 4l on the shaft 36. By
means of the hand Wheel 37, which as before stated is also provided on the shaft 36, ythe worm 39 maybe rotated in oppositedirections, according to the direction of rotation of the hand wheel* A bracket 43 extends outwardlyfrom the shaft 38, and it forms a support for a segmental worm 44y having an arm 45 pro]ectmg outwardly therefrom.,
i the saidworm being engagedby the worm wheel. The arm 45 has a linkA 46 loosely connected to it and the opposite end ofthe link is connected to the scraper blade 47 or rather to the brace 4S thereof in order that the scraper blad@ may be raised and lowered, according to the oscillation of the arm 45. The scraper blade has its inner end rotatably or pivotally mounted on a bracket 49 dependingv from the frame, and hence, as the Yframe is raised or lowered, the rear end of the blade is raised or lowered, whereas the front end of the blade is controlled by the position of the arm 45. f
Braces() connect the beam 34 with the tongue through the coupling plate 5l, and the said coupling plate has an aperture 52 therein to receive va hook of o-ne of the braces 50. `The brace is preferably sectional and provided with a turn buckle 53 by which tensionv may be diminished or increased, according to the requirements. The scraper on each side" is moved inwardly and held at diiferent positions of adjustment by a beam 53 which is oscillatably mounted on' a pivot 54 carried by the blade, and this beam has its outer end provided with a coupling 55 for a flexible element 56 which may be in the nature of a cable operating over a sheave pulley 57 which islconnected to the tongue by the fixture 58, they saidfcable extending rearwardly and being wound on a sheave 59. The sheave has a ratchet wheel 60 associated with it, which is intended to be engaged by a dog 6l whereby the parts will be held at different positions of adjustment to retain the tension on the cable. The ratchet wheel is engaged by a pinion 60?l on a shaft 60b and a hand Wheel 62 is mounted on the shaft 60b for operating the said shaft. As the hand wheel 62 is within convenient reach of an operator, the scraper blades may be allowed to swing outwardly to a greater or less extent, or they may be drawn quite close to the center, according to the requirements, as the operation proceeds.
There is a curved blade 63 which is operated by a segment 64 and a worm 65 by which the blade can be raised or lowered. The bracket 49 which is connected to the blade 47 is oscillatable on a pin 66 extending through ya post 67, which post is supported by suitable anchorages on the frame, and each blade has ears 68 secured to the bracket by pivots 69, so that the blade may be tilted to change its angle with relation to the sur? face being treated. The post 67 has a clip 70 to which a link 71 is pivoted, and each blade has a bracket 72 adjustably connected to the link as at 73, it being shown ythat the link has apertures to permit the coupling to be secured at different positions to hold in its different positions of adjustment.
The rear scraper blade 63 has its ends adjustably secured on a bracket 74 which is also carried by the post 67, but the bracket is rigidly secured with relationv to the'post. The scraper blade 63 has an apertured member 75 at each end through which the pivot 76 may extend by which the scraper 63 is connected to the apertured portion 77 of the said bracket 74, and of course the scraper 63 may oscillate to increase or diminish the height of the scraper from the surface being treated, through means of the worm and segment 64, the said segment being connected to the blade by a link 78.
The wheels 62 are each held at diiferent positions of adjustment by a spring actuated detent 79 oscillatable on a pivot 80, the said detent beingintegral with a pedal 8l which may be pressed to release the detent `from the periphery of the wheel.

In a road scraper, a frame, traction wheels separate from the frame, pivotally mounted means supported by the traction wheels, means for connecting the pivotally supported means to the frame whereby the frame is elevated or lowered, worm and gear mechanism for actuating the pivotally mounted supporting means, scraper blades having their rear ends pivotally mounted on the frame, links connected to the said blades, the blade operating mechanism being arranged in pairs each comprising an arm, a
5 bracket on Which the arm is oscillatably mounted, a segmental Worm forming a part of each arm, a shaft on which the bracket is mounted, a Worm Wheelon the shaftfor engaging the Worm of the arm, means for rotating the shaft in opposite directions for oscillating ther arm, and meansfor moving the blades transversely and for Vholding them in different positions of adjustment.
