IMPROVEMENT IN`|MITATIONSTITCH MACHINES FOR BOOTS AND SHOES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 150,842, dated May 12, 1874 application filed October 29, 1873.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CHARLES S. DUNBRAOK, of Swampscott, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a Machine for Impressing an Imitation- Stitch upon the Soles of Boots and Shoes, and for finishing the same, of which the following is a s pecitication The invention relates to a machine for imirating, upon the upper edge of the soles of boots and shoes, stitching, and also, at the same time, for finishing the edge outside of the imitation-stitch.

It consists of a frame, A A A, having within, and connected with it, a shaft, ]5, with gear F', and turned by a crank, E, and upon the other end of the shaft is a device, a, operating both to stamp the leather in imitation of stitches, and as a feed-wheel for the knife c, which smoothes and finishes the edge of the sole outside of the imitation-stitch, leaving the imitationstitch raised in appearance. Beneath the stitch-imitating device and the knife is a conical gage-guide, B, upon which the bottom of the sole rests when the work is being done. This gage revolves upon the shaft B', having gear B at the other end, meshing into the gear F, the whole being revolved by the power at the crank E.

The manner in which the parts of the machine are arranged is seen in the perspective view, Fig. l.

The object of the invention is to facilitate the operation of imitating stitches, and also, at the same time, of nishing the edge of the soles of boots and shoes or other impressible substances.

This spring adjusts the guide to the lower part of the sole in the operation, keeping a steady and constant pressure. a is the device which impresses the imitation-stitch, and which, at the same time, operates as a feedwheel for the knife c in removing the edge, leaving the edge nished andthe imitationstitch raised in appearance. The wheel is slightly concave toward the knife, and the knife has an upturned lip upon its outer edge, so as not to cut the upper, and the knife also projects slightly Within the concavity of the wheel c. b is a guard having a beveled spur, b. The guard b and spur b are so :arranged with reference to the device a that the upper is not liable to be cut or marred in the operation. e (seen in Fig. 3) is the end of a rod connecting the bar O with a treadle, not represented in the drawings. Bearing upon the treadle depresses the guide, so that the sole may be adjusted under the impressing device and knife.

The rod connecting the treadle may be on the outside, attached, as represented in the drawing, partially, or it may pass through the adjusting-screw D and spring d, and be attached to G in any convenient way.

The device a, with or without the knife c, may be used for stitch-impressions upon harnesses, or any impressible substance or material where an imitation-stitch is desirable, to give iinish and beauty to the same.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The device a, in combination with a guide, B, substantially in the manner and for the purpose shown and described.

2. The knife c, in combination with a guide, B, and a device, a, vsubstantially in the manner and for the purpose shown and described.

3. The guard b, provided with a spur, b', in

combination with the device a, the knife c, and the guide B, and operating s'lbsbantially as shown and described.

1. The guide B, the bar C, and the pivot z, the adjustable screwsT D, and spring d, in cornbinat-ion with the device a, the knife o, and the guard b, substantially as shown and described.

5. The marking device a and the conical adjustable revolving; guide B, in combination, for

the purpose described.
