To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, WAYNE E. DUNs'roN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kalamazoo, in the county of Kalamazoo and State of Michigan, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Bumpers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to bumpers such as are employed for the protection of automobiles and has for its general object to'provide,'for bumpers of the type having a rear bar or plate and a front bar comprising one or more impact plates, a particularly etlicient clamping means whereby the `said plate or plates and the rear bar are securely anchored together to prevent vibration of the central portion or portions of the front plate or plates. The foregoing general object is effectively accomplished by the construction and arrangement of parts shown in the drawing forming a part hereof, wherein Fig. 1 represents a front elevation of a bumper having the parts arranged and secured together in the manner referred to; Fig. 2 is a detail in plan of the central portion of the bumper shown in Fig. l; Fig. 3 is an enlarged front elevation of the clamp, the cooperating bumper plates being shown in dotted lines; Fig. 4 is a sectional detail corresponding to the line 4-.-4 of Fig. 1; and Fig: 5 a detail in plan of one of the ends of the bumper shown in Fig. 1.
Describing the various parts by reference characters, 1 denotes the rear section of the bumper, the same being preferably a plate such as used in the manufacture of vehicle springs and extending the full length of the bumper and bent into U-shape at its ends, to provide front end. portions 2, preferably having their ends separated. Secured to the separated ends of the sections 2 are connectin'g bars 3 and 4, consisting preferably of spring plates, each of said bars having end portions 5 adapted to conform to the ends of the sections 2 and to be secured thereto, the central portions of the bars 3 and 4 being offset in opposite directions vertically. The ends of the bars 3 and 4 are secured to the cooperating ends of the sections 2 by means of clamps 6, which may be of any standard or approved construction, such for instance, as shown in my application No. 491,110 filed August 10, 1921.
For the purpose of securing the central portions of the bars 3 and 4 to the rear bar 1, thereby to enable the front bars to be reinforced by the rear bar and to reduce the vibrationsof the parts, a clamp comprising two symmetrical clamping members is employed, each member having seats for an edge of one of the front bars and for an edge of the rear bar` with means for securing the said members together and upon the said bars. Each member comprises a pair of angularly arranged arms 7 and 8, the former arms being approximatelv vertical and the latter arms being more nearlv horizontal, the arms 8 of the members. when assembled, converging rearwardly. Each arm 7 is provided at its forward end with a hook 9v within which the upper edge of the bar 3 and the lower edge of the bar 4. respectively, are adapted .to fit, each of said members having a'rib 10 forming a vertical bearing for engagement with the rear face of its appropriate bar. Each arm 8 is provided with a U-shaped seat 11 adapted to receive, respectively, the upper and the lower edge of the rear bar 1. Formed with each arm 8 is a substantially horizontal seat 12, the said seats and the arms being perforated for the reception of a bolt 13. the head 14 and nut 15 of which is adapted to engage the seats 12, respectively.
The foregoing construction provides a very ecient means for clamping the front auxiliary bars to the rear bar and one which may be conveniently applied to and removed from the cooperating bumper parts.
Having thus described my invent-ion, what I claim is:v
1. A bumper comprising a bar having its end portions formed into loops andthe ends of su'ch ortions spaced apart, a pair of auxiliary ars each having longitudinally spaced portions secured to such spaced ends,
respectively, and an intermediate portion set from such securing portions, the inter mediate portions of said auxiliary bars projecting in opposite directions, and a clamping device comprising a pair of members extending between and connected to the said auxiliary bars and the rear section of the first bar, with means interposed between the said rear section and the said auxiliary bars for clamping the said members together and `to the said bars.
4. A bumper comprising a rear section and a front impact section having two bars or plates spaced apart vertically, and means for clamping the said bars or plates to the rear section, the said clamping means comprising a pair of members each having a seat adapted to engagel an edge of one of said bars or plates and a seat adapted to engage an edgeof the said rear section, and means connecting the intermediate portions of said members and securing the same tof gather and to their,v cooperating bumper members. l
5. A bumper comprising a rear bar or plate and a -front impact section having a pair of vertically spaced bars or plates, and
-means for connecting the last mentioned bars or plates to the first mentioned bar or plate, said means comprising a pair of 'clamping members each having a hook at its front end adapted to engage an edge of one meegaat? of the front bars or plates and a vertically extending seat adapted to cooperate with the inner face of such bar or plate and each -plate and a pair of front bars or plates vertically spaced from each other and from the said rear' bar or plate, and a clamp for securing the said bars or plates together, the said clamp comprising a pair of symmetrical members each having a forwardly and vertically extending arm provided with a hook at its end and with a vertical rib adapted to contact with the inner face of one oi said front plates or bars and each having at its rear end a seat for an edge of the rear plate or bar, each of said members having a substantially horizontal seat for a bolt head and nut, respectively, and va bolt extending through the last` Inentioned seats.
7. A bumper comprising a rear bar or plate and a pair of front bars or plates vertically spaced from each other and from the said rear bar or plate, and a clamp for securing the said bars or plates together, the said clamp comprising a pairof symmetrical members each having a forwardly and vertically extending portion provided with a seat for an edge of one of said front plates or bars and each having at its rear end a seat :tor an edge of the rear plate or bar, each of said members having an intermediate seat and abolt extending through the last Y mentioned seats.
