CHICK FEEDER.

Be it known that I, ARoN'VV. Roonnr, a citizen of the United States. residing at Lineville, in the county of Wayne and 1 State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chick Feed ers, of which the following is a specification.

The present invention relates to means for giving free access of small chicks to food, while preventing older fowls securing the same. The ob ect is to provide a novel, and at the same time practical and 1116X-\ pensive structure for this purpose.

In the embodiment disclosed a body is employed comprising a base-board 7 on which are mounted gablcd end walls 8. Said end walls support a roof, comprising side sections 9 and 10 that are hinged together as illustrated at 11, one of the sections, as 9, being provided with a handle 12, by which the feeder may be carried. The section 9 is provided at its ends with flange plates 13 that overhang the outer sides of the,

end walls 8 and have pintles 14 passing therethrough, said pintles constituting hinge connections between the roof and the said end walls. A transverse partition or supplemental end wall 15 is located between the outer end walls 8, and a hook 16, carried by the root section 9, is adapted toengage over a pin 17 on. said partition to hold the section 9 in place. The other section 10 is secured by a hook 18 carried by one end of the same and engaging over a pin 19 on one of the end walls 8.

It will be noted by reference to Figures 1, 8, a and 5 that the sides of the body are open and the space between the base plate 7 and eaves of the roof is such that it will, permit the passage of small chicks while preventing the entrance of larger towls.

Between one of the end walls and the partition 15 is mounted a feed trough 20, the sides of which terminate short of the sides of the walls and the upper edges are spaced from the roof. The remaining space within the body between the partition '15 and the other'end wall 8 may be used as a holder or compartment 21 for a water font. The opposing sides of the end wall 8; and partition 15 between which the trough is located are provided with downwardly c0nverging grooves 22 adapted to receive removable boards 23 forming a hopper or reservoin for dry mash. or the like. It will be noted that when theseboards are in place and the roof 9-10 is thereover, this hopper is substantially closed at its upper end, but that space is afiorded the chicks to permit their access to the feed in the trough 20. If wet mash is employed the hopper boards 23 are removed and a bar 24 is employed to prevent the chicks standing in the trough 20. This bar is provided at one end with a tenon 25 adapted to be inserted in a groove 26 in the'partition15, while its opposite end on said bar has a pin 27 that is first in serted in a socket 28 formed in the end wall 8. v

20 and to the hopper 23- and the utilization of said hopper boards or of the bar 242 can be easily had by removing the cover or roof fromjthe body, and when either the arrangement shown in Figure 3 or that illustrated in Figure 4 is employed, small chicks have ready access to feed in the trough 20, while grown fowls are prohibited fromentrance thereto. The device is one that can be cheaply constructed and can be readily carried about.

From the foregoing, it is thought that the construction, operation and many advantages of the herein described invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art without further description, and it will be understood that various changes in the size, shape, proportion and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
