PATENT OFFICE.
'MARVIN L. BEESON, OF SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA.
BOOFING MACHINE Application led March 23, 1922. Serial No. 546,028.
,. the following is a specification.
My invention relates to roofing machines, more particularly to machines for laying gravel and paper composition rooling and the objects of my invention are: First, to
r improve the general form and construction of vmy roofing machine for which I filed application for Letters Patent in the United States Patent Office June 24, 1921, under the title of Means and methods for preparing roofing, Serial No. 480,127; second, to provide a machine. of this class which is easily operated in corners, spaces under ledges and the like; third, to provide a machine of this class which is provided with both a cylindrical roller and a flat shoe for smoothing and packing the asphaltum, tar, paper or any other material that may be used; fourth, toprovide a machine of this class which is novelly, efficiently, and economically heated and reduces the danger from fire to a minimum; fifth, to provide a machine of this class which is comparatively light and readily portable; and sixth, to provide a machine of this class which is simple and economical of construction and use, simple of operation, durable, novelly constructed, and which will not readily deteriorate or get out of order.
With these and other objects in view as will appear hereinafter my invention conv sists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts and portions as will be hereinafter described in detail and particularly set forth in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the characters of reference thereon which form a part of this application in which: l
Figure 1 is -a side elevational view of my machine showing the shoe in position on the roofing; Fig. 2 is another sidevelevational view with the roller of my machine in conf tact with the roofing; Fig. 3 is a top view of my machine; Fig. 4 is a fragmentary -screws 12- screws 7 a.
longitudinal sectional view on an enlarged scale through 4-4 of Fig. 1; Fig. 5 is a transverse sectional view through 5--5 of Fig. 4; and Fig. 6 is a fragmentary sectional view through 6-6 of Fig. 5.
Similar characters of reference refer to similar parts and portions throughout the several views of the drawings.
The cylinder member 1, heads 2, bushings 3, axle 4, guard 5, guard end plate 6, shoe 7, shoe support 8, plate 9, washers 10, drum supports 11, drum 12, insulating material 13, electrical heating elements 14 and 15, electrical conductors 16 and 17, electrical heating element 18, insulating plate 19, insulating material 20, bearing block 21, screw 22, nut 23, electrical conductor 24, elbow 25, shaft members 26, `brackets 27, tie rod 28, Y connection 29, tongue 30, T connection 31, shaft bar 32, and switches 33 and 34 constitute the principal parts and portions of my machine.
The cylindrical roller 1 is provided at each end with a head 2, which head is revolubly mounted on a bushing 3 which bushing is secured to the hollow axle 4 by means of a set screw 3a. Between the bushing 3 and mounted on said axle are two drum supports 11, secured to the axle by means of set screws 11a. On said drum supports is mounted a drum 12 about which is wrapped the insulating material 13 which carries the heating element 14 and 15 as shown best in Fig.l 4 of the drawings. The drum 12 is secured to drum supports 11 by means of Interposed between the bushing 3 and drum supports 11 along the axle 4 are washers 10. Also mounted on the axle 4 are end plates 6 against the outside faces of the bushings 3 said end plates carrythe guard 5 which is secured thereto lby means of screws 5a. Secured to said guard end plate 6 are shoe supports v8 by means of screws 8a. The shoe member 7 is secured to said shoe support by means of Said shoe is provided with a heating element 18 which is mounted on insulating board or plate 19. Inserted between the inside face of shoe 7 and the heating kelement 18 is the insulating material 20.
To secure said heating element in position there is provided a bearing block adapted v to rest against the insulating plate. Mounted in the guard member above and in line with said bearing block is a screw 22 provided with a nut23 which, whenscrewedin the proper ydirection secures the same tightly against the bearing block and thus secures the heating element :in position. VThe shoe,
and" therefore tothe heating element. The
axlefi is provided'ifat eachend .withan elbow preferably a standard fitting yand securedA to the hollow axle"` by meansjof set screws 25a'.V Inserted inv the open end .of said elbows are the shaft members l-26,whicli are .also .held in position against the guard endlplate bymeansof -a-braclret 27 and secured Ctheretoby screws 27a.v VvSaid guard-end plates arel provided with,` a plurality of tappedfholes' 'as shown :bestfin Figs. 'l .and 2ofthel drawings, Ywhich holes are adapted to receive the screws ,27?y aridgtherefore permit they shaft ,'members or handles to assume variouspositions vwith respect to the shoe member L7, as shownbest the dotted line in.l Figs. l andl.2.f 'Shaft members 26 are further'h'eld and secured'in position by the .tie -lrods 28.; :Saidshaft members vare connected at their other ends -by means of Ia Y connection 29. Said Y connectie-nis'adapt ed to receive gthe tongue 30 onthe other end of which is screwed -a vT connection 31- which is adapted to receive the-shaft bar 32. The heating elements :14 andfl''wh'ich lare in the vcylindrical*roller are provided with electrical rconductors 16 and 17 which extend through the hollow -a-xle 4, then through the 'shaft memberf26 intoftheghol'loivtongue 30 V'then'through' the switch V33 which is connected witha source ofv electrical energy, suchfas'la ipowerfline, not shown on the drawings. rlhe telectr-ical element 18 withinV the shoejmember i'salso provided with electrical conductors 2i-which enter the elbows 25 'as shown in Fig. 4 ofthe drawings, then throughthe hollow` shaft` members 26 and the .tongue 30 to thefswitch which is also similarly connected. Y f l Though I have -shown and described va `particivilar 'i construction, 'combination and arrangement of parts and portionsy l do not 'wish'to be limited to this particular construction, combination andarrangement but desire .to include in the scope -of vmy invention. the construction, -combination, and arrangement substantially asset forth in the v. appended claims; 'y i Y It is'obvious that -=with this construction that it may be conveniently operated 'inv corners vand under ledges and the like; that both the cylindrical member for rolling and the `shoe member are electrically heated; that the machine is so constructed that the one `is turiiedu-p `out of the way while the other is in use, that the use of the electrical element,'as described, provides a means for heating `the operating mechanism whichwill reduce toa minimum the liability of danger from, iire connected with the building that the machine is small, compact and .particu- 'l larly adapted for roof "and small work;`
`Having thus described my invention 'what 1 claim Yas vnew desire to -sec-ure'by Letters Y Patent is LA roofing machine of the :class described,
