Description
"l UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE. 4-
GEORGE W. DISMAN, OF LIMA, OHIO.
4IMPROVEMENT IN H'EAD-BLOCKS FOR SAW-MILLS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 150,676, dated May 12, 1874; application filed April S, 1874. v
To au Iwhom fit may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. DisMAN, of Lima, in the county of Allen and State of Ohio, have invented certain nen7 and useful Improvements in Head-Blocks'ior Saw-Mills; and that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference 'being had to the accompanying drawing making a part of this specification, and vwhich represents in perspective the entire apparatus.
This invention consists in combining, with a sliding angle-iron, a hook and lever, the
former being capable of moving in either one of a pair of slots or ways in the upright portion of the angle-iron, to readily adapt the hook to the holding of logs, and the holding of the slabsv or boards after the logs are reduced to slabs or boards without endangering the saw.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention I will proceed to describe the same .with reference to the drawings.
' The head-block, as represented at A, is made of cast-iron, and the angle-iron or setting-knee B, which slides in Ways in the bed-portion A, may also be cast, and the two finished, so that the part B may slide freely and smoothly upon the part A. To the angle-iron B is pivoted a lever, C, which extends rearward, so as to be readily grasped and Worked by the operator; and to this lever is pivoted, as at a, a hook or dog, D, which takes into and holds the log or slab or boards, as the case may be, while the saw makes its through kerf. In the upright portion of the angle-iron B are two parallel, or nearly so, slots, b b', which may be straight,
but which I prefer to make curved, as by the latter form the hook maintains a more uniform distance from the edge of the upright portion of the angle-iron, and is not so liable to be struck by the saw. To the lever-hook l) there is connected, by a thumb-nut and screw, a button, c, which can move and hold in the underf cut or dovetail grooves or slots b b. At the top of the slots or grooves b b there is a curved guideway, e, by or over which the button c maybe readily changed from one slot or groove to the other. When the hook D is holding` a log the button Works in the groove b, and this allows the hook to project farther from the angle-iron and take a ranker hold upon the log. When the log has been reduced down to a slab or single board, then the button is run up and out of the slot b and over and into the slot b', which. draws back the point of the hook, and allows it to hold in a slab or board vWithout liability of the saw striking against it.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim is- In combination with the setting-knee B, the
lever, hook, and slots, acting. together as and for the purpose described and represented.
GEORGE W. DISMAN.
