WINDOW GUARD.
Application filed April 23, 1823.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, I-Inmar C. GRAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bucyrus, in the county of Crawford and State of Ohio, have inventedcertan new and useful Improvements in lVindow Guards, of which the following is a specification. D
The present invention is directed to improvements in window guards.
The primary object of the invention is to provide adevice of this character so constructed that when the upper sash is in its open or partly open state passage through the window opening will be closed to prevent entrance of unauthorized persons.
Vith this and other objects in view, as will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in the novel features of construction, combinations of elements and arrangements of parts, and hereinafter to be fully described and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 is a face view of a window, the sashes being closed and parts broken away to more clearly illustrate the invention,

Referring to the drawings 1 and 2 represent, respectively, the upper and lower sashes which slide in the frame 3 in the usual manner. The upper rail 4 and the lower rail 5 of the respective sashes are each provided with longitudinal grooves G and in each groove is slidable a bar 7. These bars are provided with recesses S into which are extended horizontal pins 9, said pins being formed integral with the bars. Each bar 7 is provided intermediate its ends with rack teeth 10 which are in mesh with the teeth 11 carried by the spindle 12. These spindles are rotatably engaged in sockets 13 formed in the rails 4 and 5 and are provided with handles 14, said handles having perforations 15 formed therein which are adapted to Serial No. 633,841.
register with perforations 16 formed in the lifts 17 carried by the respective rails, and when in registration the shanks 18 of the padlocks 19 are engaged therein to lock the spindles 12 against rotation and consequently the bars 7 are held against sliding movement, the purpose of which will appear later.
The guard for the lower opening of the window consists of a plurality of bars 20, rectangular in cross-section, which are slidably mounted in the bushings 21 which are threaded in the sill 22. The upper ends of these bars have heads 23 carried thereby and in which are formed transverse openings 24: adapted to be detachably engaged by the pins 9 to interlock the associated bar 7 with said heads so that when the lower sash 2 is raised or lowered the bars will be correspondingly moved. The bars 20, while the lower sash is closed, occupy the space 25 formed in the building wall.
Similar bushings 26 are engaged in the upper rail 27 of the frame 3, said rail having countersinks 28 formed therein to accommodate the ferrules 29 which are suit-- ably connected to the lower ends of the bushings 26. These ferrules are split to provide a plurality of resilient fingers 30, the purpose of which will later appear. Slidable in the bushings 26 are bars 31 also rectangular in cross section. Since the bars 20 and 31 are rectangular in cross section it will be obvious that upon placing a wrench on the bars the same can be rotated to secure the bushings firmly in their places.
The lower ends of the bars 31 are provided with circular enlargements 32 and depending therefrom are heads 33 in which are formed transverse openings 34: for receiving the pins 9 of the bar 7 carried by the upper rail 4 of the upper sash l to interlock the bar 7 and bars 31 so that the latter will be compelled to move with the upper sash as it is opened or closed.
It will be obvious that when the pins 9 are withdrawn from engagement with the heads 33 at a time when the enlargements 32 are engaged in the ferrules 29 the fingers will resiliently retain the enlargements in said ferrules thereby holding the bars 31 in their raised or inoperative positions. However, when the pins 9 are engaged with the heads 33 and the upper sash is lowered the bars 31 will move downwardly with the sash, the resiliency of the fingers 30 being merely sufiicient to hold the enlargements engaged in the ferrules, thereby holding the bars 31 elevated. When the lower sash 2 is raised and the heads 23 are engaged by the pins 29 of the associated bar 7 the bars 20 will be compelled to move upwardly, as will be obvious. Should it be desired to raise the lower sash without the bars it is only necessary to rotate the associated spindle 12, and through the medium of the teeth 10 and 11 the bar 7 will be slid in a direction to move the pins 9 from engagement with said heads. The operation of the spindles l2 and bar 7 associated with the upper rail of the upper sash operates in the same manner, and consequently the bars and 31 are independently operable.
lVhen the handles 14 are locked with the lifts 17 it will be apparent that the spindles 12 will be held positively against manipulation thus preventing anyone from disengaging the bars 20 and 31 from their respective sashes.
What is claimed is:
1. The combination with a window frame, of a sash slidably associated therewith, bars slidable in the upper rail of the frame, ferrules carried by said upper rail, means carried by the bars for frictionally engaging the ferrules to hold said bars in elevated positions, and means carried by one rail of the sash for detachably interlocking the sash with the bars to cause the bars to move at times with the sash.
2. The combination with a window frame,
of asash slidably associated therewith, bars slidable in the upper rail of the frame and having enlargement-s thereon, resilient ferrules fixed in the said upper rail, said enlargements being adapted to yieldably and detachably engage in the ferrules, and means carried by one rail of the sash for detachable engagement with the bars.
