Be it known that I, Lizzie K. RHODE, a citizen of the United States residing at Flushing, in the county of Queens and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Corsets, of which the following is a specilication.

My invention relates to improvements in corsets, its objects being in general the production of a corset without lacings, which may be readily and easily put on and which will support the body of the wearer with comfort and elegance, and which is so made as to finnish a maximum of durability.

My invention relates primarily to a fitted corset as distinguished from an adjustable garment and its particular object is to provide an elastic back section which furnishes means by which the corset may be comfortably fastened, together with durable and convenient means for removing the tension from the elastic section when the garment is being worn.

Hy improved corset obviates certa-in diiiiculties inherent in all laced corsets, i. e., the breaking of laces, which in some models of Athe prior art necessitates the return of the garment to the manufacturer for repairs, and likewise obviates the tendency found in many corsets of the prior art to permit a relative upward and downward motion of the side sections, which tendency detracts very largely rom the comfort of the wearer.

Referring to the drawings,-

Figure 1 represents a rear view of the preferred embodiment of my invention.

Figure 2 is a front view of the same.

Figure 3 is a view of the upper cent-er portion of the inne-r side of the corset showing the non-elastic binding, to which reference is hereafter made.

The corset illustrated in the drawings, consists of two similar sections 1 1, of non-elastic material provided with stays or stiifeners in the usual manner, and integrally connected at the rear edges by a shaped section or gore 2 of elastic webbing, or other yielding material. The sections 1 1 are provided at their front edges with the usual front steels, clasps or other fastening means. Extending across the inner upper back portion of the garment thus formed, is provided a non-elastic tape or binding 8, so placed as to prevent any Serial No. 602,330.

stretching of the elastic section 2 at the upper edge of the garment.

The garment thus formed is designed to be fitted to the wearer in suoli a` manner that the elastic section 2 is normally under little, or no tension when the garment is worn, the purpose of said section being to facilitate the donning and removal of the garment. The sections 1 1 are each provided with a pair of stays 4 4 running the entire length of the corset on each side of the elastic gore 2, which act to transmit proportionally through the length of the garment, any tension placed upon the lower portion of the gore 2. Each section 1 and 1 is provided at its lower rear edge with a flap 5 5, which approximate in form, an acute triangle, the shortest side of which are integrally connected to the sections 1 and 1 by stitching or other fastening, so as to exert when pulled, an effort upon the foremost stay 4 and 4. These flaps cross below the waistline and are connected as shown with belt sections 6 6. Each belt section passes through a guide 7 7 on the side section opposite to that to which its flap is connected, and is adapted to be drawn over the hip and fastened to the other belt section in front of the waist of the wearer by a suitable belt buckle or other fastener.

Running the entire length of the corset and directly down the central portion of the gore 2, is provided a stay or stiifener 8 which serve-s, together with the stays 4 and 4 to support the back of the wearer.

In putting on the garment which has been previously fitted to the wearer, the stretching of the back section or gore 2 permits the garment to be readily fastened by the fro-nt fasteners or steels. The garment having been thus fastened and properly positioned on the body of the wearer, tension is applied to the belt sections 6 6, and through them to the crossed flaps 5 5, and by means thereof the rear edges of the sections 1 1 are drawn evenly and smoothly toward each other, and practically all the tension is removed from the elastic gore 2. The tension applied to the belt sections is transmitted by the stays operating in combination with the non-elastic upper edge and thus provides a proportional pull upon the sections 1 1 throughout their length. The belt sections are then fastened, and the garment provides a snug and comfortable support to the body of the wearer.

lt is to be noted that the binding 3 not only serves to prevent a stretching of the upper portion of the elastic section 2, but also by tying the stays 4 4 and 8 tends to prevent or minimize any relative upward and downward movement of the sections l and l.

One of the advantages obtained by my invention is the prolonging of the life of the corset made in accordance therewith. The provision therein made for removing the tension from the elastic section 2, serves to prolong the life of that section by preventing any strain of prolonged duration thereon. The flaps 5 and 5 are of sucicient strength and durability to serve their purpose for a period at least equal to the life of the fabric from which the sections l and 1 are made.

Another important advantage is obtained by my invention in the provision of the flaps 5-5 so positioned and arranged to cross below the hip-line of the wearer (as shown in Fig. l) and to thus prevent the upward movement of the corset while being worn.

The arrangement of these flaps 5-5 and their associated belt sections also causes the corset to follow the contours oit the tigure in all positions thereof and thus prevents unsightly markings of the outer garments as well as giving greater comfort to thewearer.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

l. In a corset in combination, non-elastic side sections provided' with hip portions, an elastic back section, flaps attached to the back of said hip portions of said side sections, and crossed in the rear below the hipline of the wearer, and belt sections associated with said flaps and faste-ned in front.

2. A corset comprising similar hip enclosing non-elastic side sections, an elastic back section, means tending to prevent the stretching of the upper portion of said back section, and means tending to prevent the stretching oll said back section when the garment is being worn, said last mentioned means comprising belt sections and associated fiaps crossed in the rear below the hip-line oit' the wearer and fastened in front.

3. In a corset, in combination with nonelastic hip supporting side sections, an elastic back section, stays on either side of said last named section whereby tension on a portion of the corset is transmitted substantially throughout it-s length, means tending to prevent the stretching of the top portion of said elastic section, 'flaps associated with belt sections connected with the rear edges of said side sections and crossed below the hip-line of the wearer, stays at the juncture of said flaps and said side sections and a stay in said back section.
