Description

NATA' RECEPTACLE Filed Oct. 8. 1923 imllll LEQMZH LUCY NATA, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
RECEPTACLE.
Application filed October 8, 1823.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, LUCY NATA, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Receptacles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a receptacle adapted to be used for containing articles, the invention being here shown as embodied in a box adapted to receive parts of clothing from sewing machines, although it may be applied to other purposes if desired.
The invention has for an object the provision of a novel box of this type.
For further comprehension of the invention and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.
Fig. 1 of the drawing is a side view of my improved box.
Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view on the line 22 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged fragmentary transverse section on the line 33 of Fig. 1.
Fig. at is a perspective view of the box.
Fig. 5 is a plan view showing my improved box as placed to receive articles from sewing machines.
As here embodied my improved box comprises a body 10 of rectangular form and open at the top. This body may be supported on the wheels 11 this body being of aluminum, tin, or other suitable material. The. bottom of the box may be rounded transversely as shown most clearly in Fig. 3 and may conveniently be of wire mesh formation.
The bottom of the box is here in the form of a pair of doors 13, 13' which are hinged to the side walls of the box, at the bottom thereof, as at 14 and which here comprise frame elements in which are set wire mesh panels. These doors are arranged to swing downwardly to discharge the contents of the box, a novel locking means being provided for holding the doors closed.
This locking means comprises a shaft 16 extending longitudinally of the box and carried by the door 13 at the free edge thereof, the shaft being supported by lugs 17 depending from the said door, these lugs hav- Serial No. 667,428.
ing slots such as 18 therein through which the shaft passes and which permit of bodily movement of the shaft transversely of the box. The shaft 16 is normally urged toward the hinge side of the door 13 by means of coiled tension springs 20 engaged at one end with the shaft and attached at their 0pposite ends to the lugs 17.
Fixed to and depending from the other door 13 are lugs 22 each of which has a notch entered thereinto from one side thereof, the lug in effect forming a hook. Similar lugs 25 are fixed to and depend from the end walls of the box. Formed on the fr e edge of the door 18, midway between the ends thereof, is a downturned lip 28 which is adapted to be engaged by a cam 29 on the shaft 16 to move the latter bodily to one side and into locking relation with the hooked lugs 22 and 25. Although I have only shown one of these cams and lips it will be understood that the number might be increased if desired.
It is believed that the manner of releasing and locking the doors will be readily apparent from the above description. When the doors are closed, the cam 29, by its engage ment with the lip 28, keeps the shaft 16 in position engaging in the hooked elements 22 and 25, thereby holding both doors closed. To release the doors the shaft 16 is rotated, rocking cam 29, and allowing the shaft to be moved by the springs 20 out of registry with the lugs and 25, and freeing the doors. When the latter are to be closed the door 13, which carries the lugs 22, is first swung closed, and then the other door, the shaft 16 being given a rotary movement to engage the cam 29 with the lip 28 and so move the shaft transversely to locking position. The shaft 16 may have enlarged projecting ends 16 for convenience in manipulation.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent of the United States is as follows:
1. A box having a hinged bottom, and locking means therefor including shaft extending longitudinally of the box and adapted for transverse bodily movement, said shaft being carried by the door, and hooked lugs on the box with which said shaft engages when in looking position.
2. A box having a bottom made up of a pair of doors hinged at the. sides of the box, slotted lugs on the free edge of one door,
a shaft carried by said door and extending through the slots in said lugs, and hooked elements carried by the other door and the end walls of the box and adaptedto have said shaft moved-bodily transversely of itself into engagement therewith.
3. A box having a bottom made up of a pair of doors hinged at the sides of the box, slotted lugs on the free edge of one door, a shaft carried by said door and extending through theslots in said lugs, and hooked eleinents ca'rried by the other door and the end walls of the box and adapted to have shaft 'nio'v'e'd bodily transversely of itself iiito engagement therewith, and a cam on said shaft for i'noving the latter trans versely to looking position" A box having a bottom made up of a pair of doors hinged at the sides of the box, slotted lugs 011 the free edge of one door, a shaft oarried by said door and extending through the slots in said lugs, and hooked elements carried by the other door and the end walls of the box and adapted to have said shaft Inoved bodily transversely of itself into engagement therewith, and a cam on said shaft .for moving the latter transversely to locking position, and a down turned lip on the last named door adapted to be engaged by said cam.
5. A box li'aving a bottom made up of a pair of doors hinged at the sides of thebox, slotted lugs on the free edge of one door, a shaft 'c arried by door and extending through the slots in said lugs, and hooked element's carried by the other door the eii'd walls of the box 'and adapted to have said shaft nioved bodily transversely of itself into ei'igageinent therewith, and a cam on said shaft for moving the latter transversely to lookingp'osition, and springs urging said shaft in an opposite direction.
testimony whereof I have affixed my signature.
LUCY NATA.
