To ZZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM l V. MINTER, a citizen ofthe United States, residing at St. Joseph, in the county of Buchanan and Eitate of Missouri, have invented new and useful Improvements in Burners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in oil burners and has for an object the pro vision of a burner for use in furnaces, stoves and So forth which is capable of utilizing oil distillants as a fuel and which will provide a hot flame at a minimum cost.
Another object of the invention is the pro vision of a burner wherein the inlet pipe and burner pipe are utilized for supporting the burner and holding the various componentparts assembled.
lnoth er object of the invention is the provision of a burner of simple and economical construction which is capable of being easily installed.
Wi h the above and other objects in view, the invention further includes the following novel features and details of construction, to be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a sectional view of a burner constructed in accordance with the in ention.
Figure 2 is a section on the line 22 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a sectional view showing a modified form of burner.
Figure at is a section on the line of Figure 3.
Referring to the drawings in detail and more especially to Figures 1 and 2 of the drawings. there is illustrated a burner which is especially adapted for furnaces and which includes a substantially oval casing 10 through which extends an inlet pipe 11, the latter being connected to a suitable source of fuel supply and serving as a support for the casing 10.
Also extending through the casing 10 is a burner pipe 12, this pipe and the inlet pipe 11 having removable plugs 13 in their upper ends. The lower end of the pipe 12 Serial No. 661,987.
is provided with an apertured plug 1 1 which forms a burner.
Located within the casing 10 is a wall 15 which is shaped to conform substantially to and is spaced from the bottom of the casing so as to provide beneath the said wall a vapor' sing chamber 16 and above the wall a gas chamber 1?. Openings 18 provided in the inlet pipe established communication between this pipe and the vaporizing chamber 16, while openings 19 in the burner pipe 12 establish communication through the gas chamber 17.
Threadedly mounted upon the pipe 11 is a combined bathe plate and generating pan 20. the upper surface of which is dished as at 21 and provides between these dished portions a raised portion 22 which is located directly beneath the burner 14. By mounting the plate 20 in the manner shown it may be adjusted with respect to the burner in accordance with the particular furnace or heater within which the invention is placed. Extending from the inlet pipe 11 is a short pipe 23 which has secured thereto a back pressure clean out valve 24, the said valve being located beyond the point of supply of the fuel. A strainer 25 is located within the inlet pipe 11 and is removably held in. place by means of a bushing 26.
Fuel passing through the inlet pipe 11 will enter the vaporizing chamber and be distributed throughout the said chamber in the form of a thin film, the heat from the burner 1 1 quickly breaking up and vaporizing this oil and converting the same into gas which enters the gas chamber 17 and passes through the openings 19 to the burner.
The form of the invention shown in Figures 3 and t is substantially the same as that just described, except that the casing 10 is of a slightly different shape and the inlet pipe 11 passes centrally through the casing. Burner pipes 12 and burners 14: are located upon opposite sides of the inlet pipe and are spaced above the adjustable baffle plate 20 which is provided with raised portions 22 beneath the burners.
By opening the valve 24.- in either invention, back pressure within the burner will act to clean out the inlet pipe which will exhaust downward or into the ash pan of the furnace or heater. The plugs 13 may also be removed for cleaning purposes.
The invention is susceptible oi various changes in its form, proportions and minor details of construction and the right is herein reserved to make such changes as roperly fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described the invention what is claimed is 1. An oil burner comprising a casing, an inner wall spaced from. the bottom of the casing and defining a vaporizing chamber below and a gas chamber above said, wall, an inlet pipe extending through the casing and having an opening communicating with the vaporizing chamber, a burner pipe extending through the casing and having an opening communicating with the gas chamber, burner at one end of the burner pipe and a battle plate spaced from the burn-er.
2. An oil burner comprising a casing, an inner wall spaced from the bottom of the casing and defining a vaporizing chamber below and a gas chamber above said wall, an inlet pipe extending through the casing and having an opening communicating with the vaporizing chamber, a burner pipe ex tending through the casing and having an opening communicating with the gas chamber, a burner at one end of the burner pipe, a baflie plate spaced from the burner and means whereby the baffle plate may be adjusted. relative to the burner.
23. An, oil burner comprising a casing, an inner wall spaced from the bottom of the casing and defining a vaporizing chamben below and a gas chamber above said wall, an inlet pipe extending through the casing and having an opening communicating with the vaporizing chamber, ab'urner pipe extending through the casing and having an opening communicating with the gas chamber, said inlet and burner pipes being connected to the inner wall to support the latter within the casing, a burner at one end of the burner pipe and a bafiie plate spaced from the burner.
4;. An oil burner comprising a substantially oval shaped casing, an inner wall spaced. from and shaped to conform substantially to the shape oi the casing and defining a vaporizing chamber below and a gas chamber above said wall, an inlet pipe extending through the casing and having an opening communicating with the vaporizing chamber, a burner pipe extending through the casing and having an opening communicating with the gas chamber, a burner at one end of the burner pipe and a battle plate sp ced from lhc burner.
5. An. oil burner comprising a casing, an inner wall spaced from the bottom of the casing and defining a vaporizing chamber below and a gas chamber above said wall, an inlet pipe extending through the casing and having an opening communicating with. the vaporizing chamber, a burner pipe extending through the casing and having an opening communicating with the gas chamber, a burner at one end of the burner pipe, removable plugs for the burner and inlet pipes and a back pressure clean out valve for the inlet pipe.
6. An oil burner comprising a casing, an inner wall spaced from the bottom of the casing and defining a vaporizing chamber below and a gas chamber above said'wall, an inlet pipe extending centrally through the casing and having an opening communicating with the vaporizing chamber, burner pipe extending through the casing upon opposite sides of the inlet pipe and having openings communicating with the gas chamher, a burner at one end or each of the burner pipes and a baiiie plate secured to the inlet pipe and extending beneath and spaced from the burners.
