CHARLES F. STAPLES, 0F DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
' WASHING- MACHINE.
'Application led. May 26, 1921. Serial No. 472,658.
To all whom/ft may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES F. S'rArrns, a citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, county of Wayne, State of Michigan, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Washing Machines, and declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of thsame, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference bein had to the accompanying drawings, whic form a part of this specification. y
My invention relates to washing machines. The object is to provide a unitary washer and dryer of simple, inexpensive construction adapted for ease in operation and capable of thoroughly washing and drying clothes in a minimum of time. A furtherobject is to provide a washer and dryer adapted to be driven from the same source of power supply, by the same shaft at a minimum of power expenditure.
A further object is to provide a. unitary, self contained, washer and dryer in which the centrifugal drying basket is superim.
posed over the washing vat and driven by the driving shaft extending through the bottom of said vat.
A further object is to provide a washing machine in which the centrifugal drying basket is superimposed over the washing vat and mounted within the same casing for rotation, and adapted to be driven concurrently with the driving of washing elementpositioned in the vat from the same source of power supply.
These and other objects together with de'- tails of construction will more fully appear from the following description, appended claims and accompanying drawings, in which: ff
Figure 1 is a vertical section through my washing machine.
Fig. 2 is a plan view.
Fig. 3 is a horizontal section taken on the line 3 3 of Fi 1.
In the drawings let a indicate a casing, the lower portion of which is adapted to serve as a washing vat indicated as a2, which casing is suitably supported from the iioor by means of three legs b, which carry a base plate 0, upon which the casing rests. A drain plug Z is provided for the vat. The vat is provided with obstructions or radial wings a3 extending inwardly from the wall.
thereof, which may be supplied in .such
number as may be desired, either being fastened separately in place or the wall corru ated to form such obstructions.
upported below the base plate is a motor e which may be slidably mounted as shown so as to be moved radially the vat by means of a screw c2 so as to adjust the driving relationship between the bevel driving gearV and the driven gear f2 which is carried y the driving spindle g. This driving spindle extends axlally through the bottom of the vat and is'journalled in the housing L by means of bearings ,11.2 and 71,3. This spindle carries a smooth, conical, Washing element i, which extends downwardly almost to the bottom or' the vat, the lower edge of this element being bent outwardly to form a radial iange and which washing elementrotates with the spindle.
Adapted to be received within the upper portion of the casing a, superimposing the vat, is a centrifugal drying basket 7c, the wall and bottom of which is perforated as at 7a2, suc'h perforations being provided in any desired number. This basket is provided with an axially positioned hollow handle m which is adapted to receive the driving spindle g. A friction plate n is provided adapted to intervene the bottom of the basket and the upper bearing surface formed on the end of the washing element 11 so that the drying basket will rotate with the spindle concurrently with the rotation of the washing element. ABy means of the handle the dryer may be removed allowing the Washing element to rotate alone. The bottom of the centrifugal drying basket carries an annular washing member k3 which extends downwardly within the vat and is tially overhanging the vat and which flange collects the water thrown from the dryer.
The bottom of the dryer is provided with a door g which may be removed to permit the clothes to be taken from the vat and placed in the dryer without removing the dryer from the driving shaft. This door is here shown aspsecured in place by means of eccentric locking pins r. Such catches however are unnecessary as the door would remain in position during the operation of the machine.
In the operationvof this Amachine the centrifugal dryer and washing element rotate` concurrently at a suitablespeed, suchl asy 200 R. P. M., therefore, the drying opera-y tion goes on at the same time as the washing operation. The swirling rotary motion of the water set up in the vat by means of the rotation of the washing,v` element forces the water through the clothes, thereby cleansing them. On the completion of the Washing of one batch of clothes they lare yremoved through the door in the dryer and placed in the dryer where they may be driedat the same time that the washing of the second` Vat, a perforated drying basket disposed in the upper portion of the vat and engaging Iwith-the drive shaft above the washingl elementfto be rotated with the shaft,- and a drainagecollector associated with the vat V'intermediate the drying basket and washing element tocatch the discharge from the basket and prevent it from falling into that portion of the vat occupied by the washing element.
2. In a washing machine, a Vat, a drive. shaft extending upwardly through the bot-l tom thereof, a perforated rotatable drying A-basket carried byl said shaft for rotation in the upper portion of the vat, and an annular washingelement depending from the basket into 'the lower portion of the vat.
3...-In a washing A`machine, a vat, in the lower portion of which a movable washing element is disposed, and a"`\perforated drying basket positioned within the upper portion of the vat superimposed above the portion in whichthe washing operation occurs.
In testimony ication.
CHARLES RSTAPLES.
