Description

G. W. GRISWOLD WA SHING MACHINE Filed Aug. 24. 1923 Patented l9,
UHTEU a DALLAS,
WASHING iMJ-TXCHINE Texas, have invented certain new and useful.
" expensive make.
The invention will be better understood and its novel arrangement and construction become apparent by reference to the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a wash ing machine embodying my invention.
Figure 2 is also a perspective view, the three compartment tub, or container, removed from its support and certain parts of the operating mechanism shown in section.
Figure 3 is an inside View of the threecompartment tub removed from its support and disconnected from the operating mechanism, and
Figure 4 is an enlarged detail view of a central pivotal means for the vacuum cup lever.
Referring more in detail to the drawings, 1 denotes a stand which is connected to and supports avcircular base 2 which directly supports a tub 3 in which the clothes are washed. 5 and 6 are legs for supporting the stand 1 and base 2. and suitable braces 7 are provided for holding the parts in rigid position. The legs 5-5 are connected to the circular base 2 and the leg 6 is extended upwards terminating in a rounded portion 8 with shoulders 8 The stand 1, as shown in Figure 2, is notched to receive leg 6 and braces 9 are secured to the stand. 1 and leg 6 and in connection with the legs 55 provided a strong supporting means for the tub 3.
Application filed August 2 1, 3.921.
Serial ll'o. 195,002.
In the center of the circular base 2 is at fixed a rounded vertical post 1.0 preferably of wood, which is reduced in. diameter at its upper end 11 and forms a shoulder 12-.
A. cross bar 13 is provided upon which a clothes wringer 14: is fastened by the usual set screws not shown.
The cross bar 13 has each end aflixed to a pipe or tubing 15 by rivets or screws or in any suitable manner so that the wringer may be detachably secured to the post 10 and upper end of leg 6, the pipes or tubing being seated and supported upon the shoulders 8 and 12, see Figure 1.
A pair of spaced parallel bars 1616 are pivoted at 17 between the ends of a U-shaped fastener 18 which in turn is pivoted to a similar member 19 rigidly secured to the pipe or tubing 15, the object being to permit the bars 16-46 to turn freely by means of a handle 20 fastened between the bars for the swinging and up and down movement of a funnel-shaped vacuum cup 21, the cup having a rod 22 pivoted in between the bars 1616.
A tub 3 of large size intended to equal the capacity of two or possibly more ordinary galvanized iron tubs is provided and is divided by the vertical partitions 23 into three compartments as clearly illustrated in Figure 8. The compartment walls or partitions 23 radiate from a central tubular opening 23 in the tub, the opening being for the purpose of receiving the post 10 and to permit the tub to be moved or rotated upon the base 2 when desired. Each compartment has an opening 24 and a plug 25 for exit of water.
The assembled machine is shown in Figure 1, and in operation one of the compartments 23 may contain water and clothes to be washed, the washing operation consisting in the up and down movement of the vacuum cup 21, which lifts the clothes by the sucking or pulling effect therein and the lifting of the cup and lowering of same upon the clothes performs the washing thereof effectually and without friction. After being washed the clothes are transferred to an other compartment, by rotating the tub, and rinsed, then. passed through the wringer and deposited. into the third compartment as they are wrung out.
What is claimed is- In combination with a frame having a cen tral vertical post and a side "ertieal post spaced fromthe central post, a tub having a central vertical socket rotatably receiving the central post so as to be supported by the latter 0n the frame in spaced relation to the side post, a cross bar having depending sockets engaged over the upper ends of the posts,
clothes engaging means, means to actuate said means, and means to pivotally connect the actuating means to the cross bar.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
GEORGE W. GRISWOLD.
