lUNITED STATES ,JOI-IN N. SHELLER, OF DANVILL-E, `111111NC)IS.
COMBINED HOLDING AND `COTU'PIILIIIQG DEVICE.
Application filed November To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN N. SHELLER, a
` citizen of the United States, residing at Danville, .in the county of Vermilion and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in vCombined Holding and Coup-ling Devices, of which the following is a specication.
This invention vrelates to a combined holding and coupling device, designed primarily for use in connection with a pair of trousers fory coupling a belt and a suspender strap A therewith, but it is to be understood that a device, in accordance with this invention can beemployed for any purposes for which -it is found applicable, andthe invention has for its object to provide, in a kmanner as hereinafter set forth, a device of such class with means for detacliably `connecting therewith a belt and suspender tab or section` vas well as further securely and detachably coupling, at the desired position 'to the waist portion of a pair of trousers, the belt or suspender tab or section.
Further objects of the invention are to provide, in a manner as .hereinafter set forth, a device for the purpose referred to, which is simple in its construction, strong, durable, detachable, 'thoroughly efficient in its use, conveniently applied with respect yto the waist `portion of a pair of trousers, and inexpensive to manufacture.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter more specifically described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein is shown an embodiment of the invention, but it is 'to ybe understood that changes, variations and modifica-tions can lbe resorted to which come within the scope of the claims-"hereunto appended.
In the drawings wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts throughout the several views Figure 1 is a fragmentary view, in fronty elevation, of apart of the waist portion of ia pair of trousers, showing `the adaptation therewith of a combined holding and coupling device in accordance with this invention and with a portion of the belt and a suspender tab connected to the device.
.Figure 2 is a view similar to Figure 1,
7, 1923. Serial N0. '673,304.
with the part of 'the waist portion of the trou-sers shown in rear elevation and further showing the device. connected to 'the waist portion `and lhaving a suspender tab coupled therewith.
Figure 3 is 1a lsection -on line 3-3, Figure 1, showing the adaptation thereof in connection with a belt, asuspender tab andthe waist portion of a pair of trousers.
Figure 4 is a grouped perspective view illustrating the elements'of the-device.
lReferring to theidrawings `in detail, 11denotes the waist portionof a pair of trousers, 2 a suspender tab which is positioned at the rear -of the waist `portion 1, and 9 a belt which is arranged against the -outer face of the waist portion 1. The tab 2 and lbe-lt 9 are rconnected together by a combined holding and coupling device in accordance with this invention, and are further coupled to the waist portion 1 by Vsaid device.
A combi-ned holding and coupling device, in 4accordance with vthis invention, lcomprises a belt holding Ior supporting lsection land a suspender tab connecting section and with the said sections having Icooperating means for ydetachably connecting them together and further with the supporting section having means for connecting Vitto the waist portion of a pai-r of trousers and with the cooperating means for de-tachably connecting the sections together further providing for the coupling of the sections `to 'the waist lportion of the trousers.
The support-ing section consists of a substantially elongated vertically disposed integral rectangular frame formed of af'ront ybar or member 4t, a 4bottom bar or member 5, 'a vtop bar or member 6 and a rear bar or member 7. The members referred to are formed integral with each other and the 'members Lland '7 are of materially :greater length than the width or length 'of 'the members 5 and-6. r'lhe verticallydisposed frame forms an openingS for the passage of a belt 9, and said frame not only constitutes -mean-s for supporting -t-he belt 9 but further for maintaining the belt in fposi'tion at the front of the waist portion 1 ofthe trousers. The opening 8 formed by the frame, is of greater length than the width of the belt 9, so that the latter can conveniently slide 'through the frame when occasion requires.
Projecting rearwardly from the member 7 yis a pair of spaced holding barbs 10, 11,
which when the holding section is mounted in position with respect to the waist portion 1 of the trousers pierces the material from which the waist portion is made, in a manner as shown in Figure 3, whereby the holding section is retained in the position to which it has been set, or in other words the barbs 10 and 11 prevent the shifting of the holding section on the Waist portion 1.
` Projecting` rearwardly from the member 7, and arranged between the barbs 10 and 11,' is a pointed shank 12, formed with peripheral threads 13. The shank 12 is of greater length than the length of the barbs 1() and 11. and is inserted through the waist portion 1, as shown in Figure 3, and further projects inwardly from the inner face of said waist portion 1.
The connecting section is circularin contour and consists of a disk 14, having formed integral with the rear face thereof, a tapered cylindrical extension 15, having its greater diameter ot' the saine diameter as the disk 14, and with the greater diameter of the extension 15 at the rear end of the L extension.
The rear face of the extension 15 is formed with a concav-ity 16. The connecting section has a centrally arranged opening 17 formed with a threaded wall and which engages ywith the threaded terminal portion .2O ofthe groove 18 retains the tab on the extension 15.
- The threaded terminal portion 13 of the shank 12, in connection with the threaded wall of the opening 17, provides means for coupling the sections of the device to the waist portion 1, of the trousers, as shown in Figure 3.
It is thought that the advantages of a nombined holding and coupling device, in
accordance with this invention, can be readily understood froni the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, particularly in view of the convenient manner in which the device can be coupled with the waist portion of a pair. of trousers for the purpose of connecting a belt and a suspender therewith, and although the preferred embodiment of the invention is as illustrated and desciibed, yet it is to be understood that changes in the details of construction can be had which will fall within the scope of the claims hereunto appended.

2. A combined holding and supporting device comprising a belt holding section consisting of a polygonal-shaped integral frame providing an opening for the passage of a belt, the walls of4 said opening being uninterrupted from end to end, a rearwardly extending threaded shank integral with the outer face of the rear of said frame, and a suspender connecting section provided with means threadedly engaging with said shank for detachably connecting said sections together and further for coupling the device in position, said connecting section provided intermediate its ends with a peripheral groove for the reception of a suspender tab.
3. A combined holding and coupling device for the purpose sct forth comprising a continuous holding section formed with a rectangular opening for the passage of a belt and further provided with a rearwardly extending integral threaded shank, and a peripherally grooved suspender connectin section threadedly engaging with said shan whereby the sections are connected together and detachably coupled in position, said holding section further provided with aplurality of rearwardly extending rigid holding barbs.
4. A combined holding device comprising a holding section in the forni of a polygonal-shaped frame providing an opening for the passage of a belt and a rearwardly extending threaded shank foi-ined integral with the rear face of said frame, and a peripherally grooved suspender connecting section having an axial bore with the wall thereof threaded for and supporting l threaded engagement with said shank to barbs adapted to extend into the garconneet said sections together and urnient to which the device is coupled, said ther for coupling the device in position shank arranged between and spaced from 10' upon a garment, said holding section ursaid barbs.
5 ther having formed integra-l with the In testimony Whe1'eof,Iax my signature rear face thereof a plurality of spaced hereto.
