Tren sTaTes meager CLMENT VACHER, OF KELQWNA, BRITISH COLUMBIA, CAN
VSPRAYER.
Application filed January 29, 1923. Serial No. 615,724.
T 0 all 'whom t may concern Be it known that I7 CLMENT VACHER, a subject of the. King of Great Britain, residing at Kelowna7 Province of British Columbia, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sprayers; and I do hereby declare'that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others Vskilled in the art to which it appertains to make anduse the same. r`rIhe present invention relates to new and useful improvements in sprayers and is directed especially to means for attaining anintermittent andI successive operation throughout a series orsuch devices. In other words; the invention contemplatesv a plurality of sprayers arranged in communication with a sole source of iiuid supply, and anA arrangement associated with each unit whereby water flows to only one sprayer at a time, this intermittent operation continuing along the series. p
In existing devices of this character; it has been found that when the operation of a given sprayer is to be terminated and the succeeding one commenced, thel water is sharply shut oil' at the first unit and `consequently enters the next unit with suddenness. e Such abrupt entry of the water into the sprayer to beset in operation often causes bursting of the pipesfandmoreover renders the use of cheap rubber hose practically impossible. i f- Y The principal object of this inventioneis therefore the provision of, iiuid control meansassociated with thesprayer whereby the fluid cut-off above referred to willtake place gradually vrather than in anfabruptY manner. As anincidentto this eature,fit becomes possible to employ rubber-or other flexible hose as-the fluidA conductingl means among-the, units. ,Y Y Y A Y Y The invention is fully disclosed in the followingV description and in the accomfV panying drawings in which, y l
Figure 1 is a perspective view Yof'a system in operation;` ,A y l Y Figure 2 is a sideelevation of one of the Units; Y Le@ Figure 3 is an elevation taken at rightv angles toiFigure 2; V i Figure 4 is a side elevation 4similar to Figure, showing the position of parts when the valve isopen; I
erating handle 11.

'Figure 11 is a similar view showing the standard cut ofl" from the watersupply.
InFigure 1 of the drawings, where vthe system'is 'shown in perspective, a plurality of sprayers 1 are placed in communication with:V one another through the medium of piping 2 which is fed from the fluid supply 8. y
7 is a detail view of thespring dis-V Eachlvsprayer comprises a fluid convey` l ing standard 4 at the top of which is mounted a v'sprinkler head 5, such `as a rotary sprayer, in any manner well 'known in the art.
At the base of the standard is fitted a T-coupling'@ between said base and the piping 2, in which is itted a two-way valve Z (Figure 10) for controlling the flow through the standard. This valve comprises a rotatable sleeveV 8 having three openings 9 to establish communication either between the inlet pipe and the standard or'between the inlet pipe and thel outlet pipe.y The sleeve has` formed therewith a stem 1 0 adapted to be received by an op- Near the head of. vthe standard is fitted avalve 12vfor adjusting the flowl to the sprayer element;
A cylinder 13 is supported inparallelism withrtheintermediate portion of the stand-y ard by` meansof a ratchet connection 14.
The'outer end of the cylinder .is placed in fluid communication withl the standard by meansor arnipple 15`having a restricted openingl` therethrough. *Y `A piston 17 provided with a pistonrod 18 is adapted to actuate within the cylinder and is normally Yheld in uppermost position by astrong exapparent trom' the' construction thus fa;
described that the spring 19 normally tends to raise the valve handle 11 and'shut off the flow tothe standard, as shown inFig'- ure 11.
A supporting .piece 23 is secured to the standard beneath the lower end of the cylinder and serves to carry a tube 24, one end of which is fitted with an apertured plug 25. The other end of this tubecarries a "T- shaped head 26 into which is fitted a casing 27'.' A pin 28 is adapted forreciprocation throughthe'tbe iidplng 25,; li i'SIlQll mally urged towards the head" by means of a spring 29 surrounding it and bearing'against the plug 25' and' afc'llar'BO f ormed'on'the pin. A stem 3l projects from the ,Collar and 'S"Slidabls IVIQSE O'IIUEI lill@ wall of the tube 251. Within tlleasng? is disposed a rodl 33for r a `rocati therein, The. upper end et th i fries li'ad34 adapted@ abut "Gf lll.Y V taintlre same yinfthe'pof ure @against the actionllf tl Spring 29. The head is nonlallyinggedy to'it'sup'permost yposition by means" of' 'the IeXpansion spring 35 surrounding the rod 33 and acting against the head 34 :and endr of the casing 27. The teXposa-ble end of the pin 28 is adapted for insertion into one of the llinks, of the chain 21, so that the valve 7 may be retained in open position against the action of the strong spring 19 withinv the' cylinder. The end of the rod 33 cari-lesa hook 36 from which may be suspended 'a buket 37 A drip cock 38 associated with the standard is adapted to discharge into the bucket, and the ratte of flow is controllable by means of the handle 39, whereby the'time required for a predetermined ainQunt of water ,tol enter the bucket may begraduated between one minute and ten hours.
In Operation, thepa'its are. arranged in. thev position shown in'Figure 3, 'the valve? beine held 'hieren Position by 'mean-,S f the pin 28, as already described, A regulated flow of water through the' dripfcock 38 is allowed into the bucket according to the period of operation desired for the sprayer; Then the weight of the waterl withiny the bucket is suflicient to counteract the spring 35, the rod is pulled downwardly, where; by the head 34 disengaged from the pin 2,8 and the latter moves inwardly, thus releasing` itself from the rcliain 21;"Tlie spring 19 is free to act, and therefore raises'the valve handle 11 whereby the valve closed. At the moment the pinis releasedfrom the chain, the standard the portion of the cylinder above the piston are filled with water. The rise` Of the piston 17 must force tlle'yyater, from the Cylinder throlsh there strcte'd. opening 1, and Since this action cannot take place instantly,thef'eldsingof the valre vis retarded andtakes plate 'ina gradual manner'. 'It 'wllibe understood that as the valve closes to the standard it simultaneously opens to the next sprayen'and that thesu'pply 'of water is delivered to the latter sprayer in a. gradual manner. It has been found that because of ,this resilient control of the valve 7, it is feasible to employ flexible tubing among the various units of the system.
i' In order to dstend the spring 19 for again opening the valve 7, there is pivoted to the standard an operating lever 40 pro vided with a pluralityof pins 41 adapted for engagement with the chain 21,. The diflicultyo'f llowering the chain 'is thereby'decreased considerably. The'standa'rd may be provided with afvalve Ycontrolled branch 42 for a,ceornrno'dating z lfho'se'43Y (Figure l) 'if des' 1 fd. U'Iliev baser of 'the standard isA fitted with 1 foot fr' insertion 'inte tti@ grl'ld when the lsystem iserected,`
' While. a specifi@ embodiment 0f' the invention ll be'nilllrtd hd dsrbsd it iS to' be und'stol that various' altratensf in the"`details of construction maybe made without departing from'the spirit of the in#V vention as indicated by the appended claims.
