Vvices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to fuel saving devices, and more particularly to that class of devices `which may be installed in chimneys or smoke pipes.
An object of this invention is to provide a device which will increase the efficiency and economy of heating devices, particu` larly furnaces, stoves, and the like.
Another object of the invention is toy provide a durable collapsible device which upon installation may beadjusted to meet the peculiar conditions encountered with each furnace, chimney or the like.
A further object is to provide a deiiector which is adjustable to direct the draft of air as desired to sweep down into the base of the chimney irrespective of the size of the chimney. j
The above and various other objects and advantages of this invention will in part be described in,and in part be understood from the following detailed description of the present preferred embodiment, the same being illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of a fuel saving device constructed according to the present invention, which is installed in a chimney, a fragmentary view of the chimney and heating plant being shown in section.
Figure 2 is a front elevation of the fuel saving device.
Figure is a side elevation of the same. Figure 4 is a top plan view thereof. Figure 5 is a longitudinal section'of a modified form of the Vrdevice installed in a chimney, Ya portion of the latter being shown in section. Y'

Referring to the drawings, and first to Figure 1, 10 designates a chimney ofthe usual type adapted for carrying away smoke and gases from the heating plant 11 which may be of the type used for generating steam, hot-water or the like. The gases and smoke from the heating plant 11 are carried through a smoke pipe 12 which enters a suitable opening 18 in one side of the chimney 10, and `from thence the gases and smoke are carried into the atmosphere by the flue 14'.. It is of course understood that the chimney 10 with the flue 14 may be of any desired height and may be made of brick, stone or the like and that the flue formed by the chimney may be of any desired shape. The chimney 10 has a second opening 15 which is cut through one side of the chimney at any suitable point intermediate the smoke pipe 12 and the floor 16, and in which is received a metal frame 17. The frame 17 lits snugly into the opening 15 and may be cemented or otherwise secured '1n place. To further prevent the frame 17 from becoming loose, and for purposes here inafter described, Va panel 18 'is provided on the' outer edge of Vsaid frame which fits flush against the inner wall of the chimney 10. `The upper edge'y of the panel 18 is 'provided'with a plurality of lugs 19 whichA are in spaced vapart relation toeach other and serve as bearings for a rod 20.
An adjustable air deiiector having side members 21 and a top member 22V is loosely fitted into the frame 17, and atits outer end the top member-22 is provided with a iiange 23 which substantially encircles the rod 2O intermediate its endsand lintermediate'the lugs 19, thus forming a hinge to Vpermit the adjustable deflector to be swung to any dedeflector member 26 hasits upper edge,
rolled over to form a hinge engaging` a rod k27 which issecured in the side members 24 near the inner extremity of the top wall 25.
`Adjacent the lower edge Vof the deflector member 26 and on the under side thereof is provided a plurality of lugs 28 which arc in spaced apart relation to each other. rod 29 extends through suit-abley openings in the side members 24 and through openings in the lugs 28-oi `securly holding-the adjustable deflector member 26 in a predetermined position. Adjacent the inner ends or" the side members 24 `there is yprovided a plurality of holes 30 which are placed in spaced apart relation to each other and are arranged in an arcuate row concentricwith the rod 27, and in which is received the rod 29.r The rod.;29 is preferably threadedat either or both ends to receiveba nut 31 for securing the rod against movement.v Adjacent the outer ends or" the side members 24 and intermediate the. upperL and lower edges of said side members a series ot holes 32is provided in spaced apart relation to each other and preferably' paralleled toboth the upper. and lower edges, said holes registering` withv alike. series of holes 33 adjacent the Vinner vendsroi' the side members 21. IntermediateA the ends of the upperemember l;22 an-:l on the lower side thereof is provided -lug 35 for hingedly holding -an arcuatethreaded rod -36 which extends outwardly and upwardly through an opening 37r onmadoor. 38. An expanding spring39 substantially encircling `the rod 36 -intermediate its ends is-held at its inner endby anadjustablev cup-shaped nut L10. The outer endof the spring-39 is free andi isadapted tobengage the inner ywall vof theqdoor 38 to yieldingly support the door uponthe-air-,deflector 22 through the intermediary of -the rod; 36. Adjacentl the outer end of therod 36 there is provided an adjustable lnut 41 foradjustably urging the door 38against the spring 39. door in.. a downwardly inclined position Ywhen shut, thus ,utilizing the-full orce of gravity onthegdoor 38 for; maintain-ingit closed; Theflangejfl3 is further held in sealed;.positionL against. thepanel 18by a weight 43a, whichis formed at the vdeepest jportiono't' the fla-nge 43 by thickening the outer free edge ofthedoor 38.` The flange Ll3at the upper edge of the door 38 has a recess at 441 to accommodate the flange 23 when theV door is fshut. The lowerlouter edge of the door 38A has a lug 45 for holding a chain 46 or the like so that the movement-oi the door-may be controlled and operated at a distance therefrom. The fuel economizer of this invention may be installed in thechimney wall 10 at any suitable height above the ioor or ground 16 by forming the opening lat the desired height suoli as shown in Figure 1 to accommodate thei'ramel' andcm'aintain the door 38- at all times above a steam pipe 16a or any other device whichmay be disposed near the chimnev wall, 10.
The upperward movement of the chain 46 raises the door 38 which simultane-y ously .c lowers the three deliecting inembers 22, 25 and 26 and permits the cold air to enterthe opening, 15. Theair striking the innermost deiiector 26 is de liecteddownward. thus giving theair a circular motion. as shown by the arrows 11ia which when.,rising-.. in the iiue 1e wipes across the inner end of the smoke pipe 12 as shown by thearrow'lf, and fcheclts the gases and other productsof combustion in the pipe 12and deliects the same, backwardlyto some extent as shown by the arrows 12u so that the products of combustionmay bey entirely consumed `betore entering tthe chimney flue 14. Each delector member may be adjusted tofmeet the varying con ditionsarisingin each chimney both as to thickness of chimney or as to depth of flue.
In themodiied form of this invention in Figures 5, y6` and 7 the deflector 47 is attached'to `the ,door 38 preferably by bolts 48 yorthe like. Thedeector 47 is substantially L-shape, the inner end of Vwhich has its top wall curved downwardly. In this modified `form thefarcuatev rod 36 ,of

What is claimed is l. In a fuel economizer, a frame adapted to be mounted in the wall of a chimney,
1.a doorhinged tothe frame for regulating draft through the frame, and a deflector connected to the door and projecting through the frame, said deiector being adjustable simultaneously with the door as the latter is opened and closed.
2. A fuel saving device comprising a frame adapted for insertion in a chimney wall and having a panel secured to its outer j edges, a hinged door for closing the openling within the frame, a deflector having an open bottom within said frame and eXtending inwardly therefrom, operating means for saidV defiector to actuate it simultaneusly with the opening and closing of said oor.
8. A fuel saving device comprising a frame adapted to be mounted in the wall of a chimney having a panel on its outer edge a hinged door for closing the opening within the frame, a defiector within said frame, connecting means between the door and deflector for simultaneously opening and closing the same, a second defiector adjustably attached to the first deector,
and a third deflector adjustably attached to said second defiector for movement therewith. f

A fuel saving device comprising a frame adapted to be mounted in the wall of alchimney having a panel on its outer edge, a hinged door having inwardly eX- tending flanges on its inner surface adapted to seat against said panel, a hin ed deflector within said frame, a Asecon deflector adjustably attached to said first deflector, a third deilector contained within said sec-- ond# deflector for defiecting downwardly the draft of air entering through said frame, and an adjustable connection between the deiectors and the door for simultaneously adjusting the same.
5. In a fuel eeonomizer comprising a frame for installation in the wall of a chimney, a weighted door hinged at the front of the frame for normally closing the opening therethrough, a pivoted to the top of the lframe and projecting inwardly into the chimney, and a yieldable connection between the door and the deiector for adjusting the deflector by opening and closing the door.
6. In a` fuel economizer Y comprising a frame for installation in the wall of a chimney, a door hinged upon the front of the frame for closing it, and a defiector connected to the inner side of the door and projecting into the chimney, said deflector being adjustable by the opening and closing of the door.
