H. G. CARLSON SHEET METAL ROCKER ARM AND METHOD OF MAKING THE SAME Filed Jan. 17, I921 Patented July 29, 1924.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HJ'ALMAR G. CARLSON, OF WORCESTER, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO ROCKWOOD SPRINKLER COMPANY OF MASSACHUSETTS, OE WORCESTER, MASSACHUSETTS, A
CORPORATION OF MASSACHUSETTS.
SHEET-METAL ROCKER ARM AND METHOD OF MAKING THE SAME.
Application filed January 17, 1921. Serial No. 438,055.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HJALuAn G. CARLSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Worcester, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Sheet-Metal Rocker Arm and Method of Making the Same, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to make a rocker arm out of sheet metal. The particular rocker arm to which the invention is directed is the one employed in connection with magnetos now made out of cast metal. By making this rocker arm out of sheet metal as hereinafter described, the same can be made more durable, lighter and efiicient for its purpose.
The way the-rocker arm is made is illustrated in the accompanying sheet of drawin? in which ig. 1 is a view of the blank employed;
,Fig. 2 is a plan, and. Fig. 3 an end View of the blank after the drawing operation is performed thereon; and
Fig. 4 is an end elevation, and Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the completed article.
Referring to the drawing, it will be seen that I first cut out a blank of sheet metal of the shape indicated in Fig. 1, which blank may be said to have a section A which is to form the back of the completed article and two sections B-B which are to form the sides of the completed article, the dividing lines between 'the sections which are to be formed being indicated by a-a and a'a. The side sections BB have partial circular projections 0-0 and rectangular projections DD. The rectangular projections DD are drawn or bent at ri ht angles to the blank and circular bosses 'C' are formed by centrally perforating the two projections CC and turning backwardly the inner edges thereof by forcing through the perforation a plunger larger than the perforation, as indicated in Fi s. 2 and 3. The
edges of the wings D- and the bosses C'C may be smoothed off so that they will come in the same plane. The blank is then folded or pressed at ri ht angles on the lines H and a'-a', so t at the bosses C C will butt together and so that the wings DD will butt together. The butted bosses will form a bearing hub which may be reamed out if desired and the two wings which are butted together will form a bearin face.
y this method of manufacture a simple sheet metal rocker arm for the purpose described is rovided.
.The roc or arm may be engaged by a thrust rod or roller at its lower end which roller may bear on the portion E of the back section A and when this eng'a ement is made the portion 13' B of the si e sections will form ribs to keep the thrust rod or roller in engagement laterally with the section E.
The details and arrangements herein shown and described may be varied by a skilled mechanic without departing from the scope of my invention as expressed in the claims. Having thus described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 2-- 1. The method of making a rocker arm or the like of a piece of sheet metal which consists in forming a blank to form a back section and two side sections, pressing circular bosses on the two side sections, forming passages through the bosses, bending the blank on two lines to bring the side sections into parallel position and butt said bosses together by said bending operation to form a bearing hub.
2. The method of making a rocker arm of a piece of sheet metal which consists in cutting out a blank to form a back section and two side sections, forming hollow circular bosses on the two side sections, and
bending wings in from said side sections,
butting said bosses together to form a bearing. hub, and butting said wings together to form a bearing face.
3. A rocker arm made out of a piece of sheet metal folded on two lines so as to form a back section and two parallel side sections, and Wings bent in .at right angles from said side sections which are butted to ether in alinement by said folding operation to form a continuous bearing face.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto affixed my signature.
HJALMAR G. CARLSON.
