Patented July 29, 1924.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DANIEL E. MELOCHE, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR T EARL HOLLEY, OF
DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
METAL morn.
Application filed October 2,1922, Serial No. 591,725. Renewed February 28, 1924.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it'known that I, DANIEL H. MELOCEE, a citizen of the United States, residing at 2241 Gladstone Ave, Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michi an, have invented certain new and use 111 Improvements in Metal Molds, of which the following is a. specification.
This invention relates to a metal mold specially adapted for the casting of cast iron pistons.
In the manufacture of cast iron pistons it is extremely desirable to obtain uniform hardness of the rubbingsurface and also to control the degree of hardness to correspond to the hardness ofthe cylinder wall so that the life' of the pistons and the wall may be equally long.
The figure shows'a cross section elevation of the mold showing a core and casting in place.
The mold consists of two similar parts A and B enclosing a baked dry sand core 0 which is provided with a conical concentric sprue or entrance D. ,Horizontal rectangular gates E and F lead out from the 'bottom of the sprue into the center of the piston bosses G and H.
Owing to the size of the core C no risers are required asthe mold is vented throughthe core. The core is located and locked in place by means of a shoulder J and a conical portion K which is provided with a large surface L exposed to the air. The surfaces of the dry sand core C, against which the iron is cast, are protected'by a coating pref- .erably of magnesium oxide aa set forth in my co-pending application, Serial No. 548,475, filed March 31, 1922. The magne- 40 sium oxide is applied, gluten being used as a binder and water as a carrier. The core is of course dried after being coated. The surface of the molds.are also protected. The
particular coating that has been found best for this purpose being the coating of fire clay using soluble water glass as a binder, as set forth in my co-pending application Serial No. 581,239, filed Aug. 11, 1922. A
coating of lamp black is superimposed on sothe coating of soluble silicate, the function of this coating being described in my copending application, Serial No. 579,927, filed Aug. 5, 1922.
The broken line indicates the arran ement of the core extended to give the mcreased head required when casting nonferrous metals instead of cast iron.
Th shoulder or ledge J provides a support for the core C. The inclined or conical face K, which is inclined at a re-entrant angle with the mold, prevents the core floating upwards under the ferrostatic head of the molten iron flowing in at D.
What I claim is:
1. In a metal mold adapted to the casting of an internal combustion engine piston, a horizontal shoulder, a re-entrant conical face above said shoulder, a dry sand core resting on said shoulder and prevented from risin by said re-entrant conical face.
2. In a metal mold adapted to the casting of an internal combustion engine piston, a horizontal shoulder, a re-entrant conical face above said shoulder, a dry sand coresaid conical face, a sprue within said core,
a gate leading from said sprue to the cavity corresponding to the said piston bosses.
4. In combination with a sectional metal mold adapted for the casting therein of automobile engine pistons head downwards, a cylindrical core having a re-entrant shoulder locating saidcore in said mold and preventing it rising in the mold under the ferro-static head of the iron cast'therein.
5. In'combina-tion with a sectional metal mold adapted for the casting therein of an automobile type of piston head downwards, said piston having wrist pin homes integral therewith; a cylindrical dry sand core within said mold, a sprue within said core, gates leading from said sprue to a cavity corre sponding to the said piston bosses, a re-entrant shoulder on said core, a corresponding shoulder on said mold whereby the core is located within said mold and .prevented from rising therein under the ferro-static head of the metal cast therethrough.
In testimony whereof I allix my si ature.
DANIEL H. MELOC'HE.
