' l Application mea acaben-10,1922. serial No'. 593,579.
To ali whom may concern."k
Be it'knofwn 'that I, JOHN IAM-ns Correr7 a citiz'enof the United States, andfresiding atBethiehem', Northampton County, .State of Pennsylvania,V have invented certain new f' and useful Improvements in VStampHolders, of which lthe followingY is `a specification.l I 't ,l
Thisinvention 4relates to stamp orzdie holders and its object is toV provide a device of =this fkindhaving means for centering the dies on the stock to be stamped, to 'provide Ya device having a head-- made separate from the dieiholder proper-so that the part of the head which receives the thrust of the dies may berheat treated to withstand the wear, and generally to prov-ide detailed improvements in devices of this kind by .which the same are rendered more secure against wear or breakage.
lThe accompanying drawings forming a Ypart of this specification disclose a device embodying which drawings:
Figure 1 is a side view of the device partly in section;
Figure 2 is an end view of the same;
Figure 3 is a section yon the line 3 3 of Figure 1; and p f 'Y Figure 4 is an end view of the die holding member detached from the head. e
Referring to the drawings in detail, my
n improved device comprises a head 10, the
lower end of which is provided with a reduced portion 11 to which portion the die holding member 12 is secured, this member having a slot 13 in which theend portion of the head 10 is arranged7 these parts being fastened together, preferably by means of a series of rivets 14. As will be noted the reduced portion 11 of the head 10 is provided with a straight face 15 against which the inner ends of the dies 16 are adapted to abut, the dies being mounted in a recessv or slot 17 alsof formed in the die holding member 12. To hold the dies in position in the member 12, I provide a clamping plate 18 which is secured to the head 10 and member 12 by means of a bolt 19 preferably' threaded throughisaid parts 10 and'12 and held in place by a cotter pin 19a. The lower end of the plate 18 is provided with a lip 2O which extends through a slot 21 in the member 12 and engages notches 22 formed my improved construction, in
I stamping stock of that kindl iajfi-.iieQ- Siaes'rof the aies 16. The aies are thus held `against removal from the member 12 while the locking'plate 18 is in position. To Yhold the dies rigidly `in the slot 17 I provide? a set screw 23 which is threaded into one lend of the memberl 12 and positioned to engage a line of dies in the slot.
" By making the'head-lO and die holder 12 separate from each-other, I amable to heat l treat and harden the reduced portion 11 of the-head -soithat ythe same is able to successfully withstandthe blows transmitted to the face 15 by the inner ends of thedies 16 when being used. Y
To |provide for properly centering` the dies 161onround stock, I secure a centering plate 24 tol each; end of the device, Veach of these plates being held in position by means of a Vset screw 25 passing through a slot` 26 in the plate and threaded into the head 10 andV by means of flanges 26a which overlie and fit closely against the front and rear faces of the member 12. The slots 26 permit adjustment of the plates 24 relative to the dies 16 to accommodate'round stock ofV different sizes. Each of said plates 24 at its lower end is provided with spaced members or arms 24EL which are adapted to contact with round stock at spacedpoints soas to center the dies 16 thereon and thus facilitate When stamping a hat surface the plates 24 are adjusted so that ends of the-arms 24 aresomewhat above said surfacewhen the dies'are incontact therewith. The arms 'in this position provide a satisfactory means. for steadying the holder and retaining the same substantially vertical with reference to the surface to be stamped and thus insure uniform depth of depressions after stamping.
I-Iaving thus-described my invention what;
of dies therein, centering means for said holder comprising a plate adjustably secured to each end of said holder, each of said plates having at its lowerend tivo doWnvfardly projecting spaced armsarranged on opposite sides of the central longitudinal plane of said slot.
3. A stamp holder comprising a body having a slot adapted to receivea line of dies, a centering plate secured to each end of said body, each of said centering plates having two spaced arms at its lower end arranged on opposite sides-oi the central longitudinal plane of said slot, the upper portion of each or' said plates being provided. With flanges arranged on opposite sides of said' body.
Il. A stamp holdercomprising a body havinga slot adapted to 'receive a line of dies, a centering plate adjustably connected. to each end of'said body, each. of said plates having a forked lower portion, the free ends 1 of Which portionsarearranged on opposite one end'provided lvvith la thrus sides oi' the central longitudinal'y plane of said slot.
' 5. device of the kind described comprising a head havinga reduced portion at receiving face, said portion being heat treated and hardened, an integral die holder having at A one end a slot in Which the reduced portion of said head is secured, said holder also having a second slot communicating with said rst named slot, andmeans for securing a plurality of dies in' said last named slot With their inner ends positioned adjacent said thrust receiving face of the head.
6. A device of the kind described comprising a head having a reduced portion at one end provided with a thrust receiving face, said portion being heat treated and hard ened, an integral die holder having at one end a slot in which the reduced portion o said head is secured, said holder also hav ing a second slot communicating with said first named slot, and means for' retaining a plurality of dies in said last named slot with their inner ends positioned adjacent said thrust receiving face, said means including alocking plate secured to one side of the device and having a port-ion extending through a third slot in said die holder for engaging the diesin said second slot. Y
In testimony whereof I hereunto aiiix my signature.
JOHN J COFFEY.
