To all whom it may concern 'Bef it known that LEM J. Prnrrrnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Union Grove, in the county of Racine and State of liVisconsi-n, have invented new and useful Improvements vin Foot Accelerators, of which the-following is a specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in foot accelerators and more particularly to a foot accelerator for a Fordson motor. The main object of ythe present invention being the provision of a foot accelerator which can be quickly and readily .attached toa tractor of the Fordson type and arranged in a convenient posi tion forthe driver of the vehicle so as vto eliminate the necessity of the driver using o his hands yfor actuating vthe throttle of vthe motor -tocontrol the speed ofthe same.
Another object of my invention is .the provision of a foot accelerator particularly adapted' for Fordson Vtractors which can be quickly and readily applied to the designs of tractors in use at the .present time with-V out necessitating any change .of the parts of 1 the tractor and includes means for readily connecting the same to the carburetor and the ordinary handk control ,of the tractor.
lVith the above and other objects lin view the invention consists in the novel features is an enlarged side( elevation of the z, of Fig. 2.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, in which reference characters are used to designate the several parts throughout the views, the numeral 1 indicates in general a bracket which supports the foot pedal 2. The bracket includes the arms 3 and 4 provided at their outer ends with suitable bolt openings 5 whereby they may be readily connected to the side of the gear shift-ing plate as shown in Fig. 1. The ends of the arms 3 and 4 are brought together and .disposed in alignment with an opening .extending therethrough to receive f al pivot bolt 6. The foot pedal v2 is provided with a perforated. Aear 47 disposed in alignment with lthe ends of the arms 3 and 4:- of the bracket and through which the pivot pin 6 ,extendsfor pivotally mounting the foot piece upon the bracket.
k The main actuating rod 8 of my improved device is mounted .for rotating movement within the supporting sleeves 9, one kof said sleeves being preferably secured to the bracket 10 which supports the gasoline snppaly .tank of the tractor.` The other sleeve is preferably secured to oneof the bolts which secures the cover on dthe differential case as illustrated in Fig. 1 so that .these two sleeves may be arranged in substantially spaced relation. The lower endvof the rod 8 is provided withk a crank arm 11 and pivotally connected to oneend of the crank arm is a link 12, the 4otherend Iof whichis p'votally connected at 1,3 to the. outer end of the 'toe portion of the foot pedal 2. From this construction it will be readily apparent that when the toe portion of the foot pedal Qiis pressed downwardly the crank 11 will be actuated to impart a rotary movement `to the 1nd 8.
Asleeve 14 is mounted upon the upper end of the rod 8 and connected Vthereto, ,said .Sleeve Aharing attending outwardly' there lfrornan arm 1-5 ,provided at its outer end with a plate 16. Thisplate 16 has loose connection with an eye formed upon one end of the connecting rod 17 which is fastened to the carburetor control rod 18. The end of the rod 17 which connects with the control rod 18 may be secured in any suitable manner, but preferably by forming a sleeve upon the end of the rod 17 which embraces the rod 1'8 and is secured thereto through the medium of a set screw or the like. From this construction it will be apparent that when movement is imparted to the foot pedal 2, the rod 8 will be rotated for actuating the arm which in turn will impart a pulling movement to the rod 17 for actuating the control rod 18.
In order to provide means for connect-ing the foot actuating device with the main throttle19 a-rod 20 is connected at one end to the handle. throttle 19 and extends downwardly to the looped connection between the rods 15 and 17 and loosely engages with the plate 16 on the rod 15 as shown in Figs. 1 to 3. As a general rule the hand throttle kmovement on a Fordson tractor is in an inclined plane and from the construction illustrated and set forth in the drawing, it will be noted that lwhen the rod 8 is rotated the movement voi the arm 15 willy have a tendency to pull downwardly upon the rod 20 and actuate the hand throttle 19 and from this it will be apparent that the accelerator rod 18 may be yreadily controlled from Veither the foot pedal 2 or the hand throttlel9. t Y
In order to return the rod 18 in a direction opposite to that in which it is moved by the hand throttle 19 or foot pedal2 or in other words to close the carburetor a 'spring 21 is connected at one end to the plate 16 of the arm 15 with its other end connected to any suitable part oi' the machine so that the spring will be disposed in a position to exert tension for pulling` against the movement .of the arm 15 so that after the foot pedal 2 or hand vthrottle 19 have beenreleased from active movement, the tension of the spring 21 will move the rod 18 to close the carburetor'.
It will be apparent from the above description taken in connection with thev drawings that I have provided an extremely simple device which can be quickly and readily attached to Fordson tractors in use at the present time and wherein the speed of the same may bereadily controlled'by the foot of the operator so that the' operators hands may be free for usejentirely in steer ing the vehicle. It will alsor be apparent that thedevice can be quickly and readily assembled and applied tothe tractors" in use at the present time.
While I have shown and describedvthe preferred form of my invention Iy wish it to be understood that various changes and alterations may be carried out during the manufacture of the same without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is:
1. An accelerating device including a rotatable rod, a crank arm at one end of the rod, apivoted oot treadle having connection with the crank arm, a connecting yarm at the other end of the rod, a connecting rod having loose connection with the outer end of the connecting arm, a second connecting rod loosely connected'with the arm at one end and having its other end connected with the hand throttle of a motor, said first rod having connection with the accelerator rod of a motor, and a spring member having one end connected to a stationary part of the motor and the other end attached to the loose connection between the arm and the aforesaid rods.
2. The combination with a motor, having an acceleratorrod, and a hand throttle for actuating said rod, of an auxiliary rod disposed at an oblique angle with respect to the acceleratorV rod and mounted for' rotary movement, a crank upon one end of the rod, a foot treadle having connection with the crank for imparting movement to the rod, means forming connection between the accelerator rod and the first rod, additional means forming connection between the irst rod and the handle throttle, andV a spring having connection with the aforesaid means and a stationary portion of the motor.
