BOTTLE-CAPPVING MACHINE.
Applicationled .'Karch 3, 1925. Serial No. 12,951.`
My invention relates to a :bottle capping machine and although capable of use generally as a capping machine, it is more particularly designed for capping aform of non-refillable bottle.
The general object of -my invention is to provide a bottle capping machine having novel meansior properly placing the cap on the bottle; together wlth vcoordlnated v means to subjectthe cap to pressure in a manner to cause the cap to conform to the beaded neck of the bottle.
The nature of my invention and its diso tinguishing features andl advantages ,will appear as the descri tion proceeds.' y
' Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawing ormin a part of this specification, it being un erstood that the draw-` Y' o cordance wit the illustrated` example, a
back late 10' is provided adapted to be secured by any suitable means to a wall or like support conventionally indicated in Figure 1. In front of the back plate 10, which usually is disposed vertically, is a jtable 11 on which the bottle A may rest, said table having a flange 12 and having ,within said flange a felt, leather, or other suit- .able covering 13 to overcome any tendency bottle and to require the bottle to turn with the table. The table 11 is on a spindle 14 turning in a bearing 15 lon a bracket 16. Said bracket 16 is made vertically adjustinto the base 10^whereb the bracket 16, the
spindle 14, and table lvertically to suit bottles of different heights and give the table and bottle proper 'relation to the ycapping.; means hereinafter described.
. Suitable means is provided for turmng the spindle 14 andl its table 11. In the illustrated exam -le a bevel Ainion 18 is afof the table to revolve independently of the able being provided with bolts.'116 passing through slots -216 inl said bracket .and
1 may be adjusted l0 I ,between the same and the arms of the yfork 39, said washer having alternate fingers 43, A44 bent in opposite directions to frictionally and meshesjwith a bevel gear'- 19 `on a transverse shaft 20 adapted to be driven manually .or by power, therebeing shown a pulley 21 to receive a belt (not shown).
Above the table 11 and in line therewith.
is a cappingr head722 between which and the table 11 ,the bottle A is accommodated. Said capping head 22 is on a vertically re- -ciprocating spindle 23 operated by a bellcrank lever 24 connected with said spindle by ,a link-25. Said lever 24 is fulcrumedas at 26 on a forked arm 27 of a bracket 28 secured by bolts 29 or equivalent. means to basel plate 10.
With the above described arrangement a bottle A is seated on the table 11 at which time the capping head 22 is held in a raised position by the lever 24. The cap B hav-- ing been placed on the bottle the lever 24 is operated to, force the capping head l22 downwardly over the bottle cap B until said cap is pressed firmly home onto the bottle neck.
I provide means coordinated with the capping head 22 andtable 11 for causing the bottle cap B to conform to the bead ofy the bottle neck as indicated at b inFigure 2 for which purpose the following mechanism is provide'dz' On a lateral extension 30 lof base 10 is secured a casting 31 which has a guideway 32 in which operates a slide 33, the rear end of which has a slot and pin connection with a lever 34, there being a slotI 35 in said lever and a pin 36 on said slide 33 positioned in said slot. The lever 34 is fulcrumed at its inner end as Iatf3? to an yarm 38 on casting 31. The arrangement is such that the operation` of the lever causes the slide 33to be reciprocated in the guideway 32 toward or from the coincident axes of the capping head 22 and table 11. The forward end of the slide 33 is formed with a fork 39 in which' is disposed, a peripherally grooved beading roller 40 on a shaft or transverse in 41. passing through said fork and through'said roller. To vcenter the roller engage respectively the.- inner surfaces of the members of fork 39 and the side surfaces ofthe wheel 40. When the cap B has been emplac'ed'on--the bottle A as dexed to the end 1 Yofs'p'ndle 14 a washer 42 is employed at each sideV roller 40 engages the cap B the spindle 17 is revolved by the gears 18, 19 for turn- Fing the tablell and bottle A as well as the bottle cap B.v
The capping head 22 is so arranged that l itY turns with the table 11, bottle A and cap B, said head 22 being swivelled to the spindle 23. Said spindle 23 has an annular groove 123 within the tubular shank 122 of the capping head 22 and a pin 45 passes through the shank 122 tangentially to the annular groove 123l to lie partly in said groove and partly in the shank 122. The lower end of thehead 22 when the bottle A is clamped in position is in a lplane above the bead b leaving clearance for the operation of the beading roller 40. I would state in conclusion that While the illustrated example constitutes a practical embodiment of my invention, I do not limit myself strictly to the exact details herein illustrated, since, manifestly, the same can be considerably varied without departure from the spirit of the invention as defined in the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
A reciprocable beading Aroller unit for 'bottle'capping machines, including a transverse slide having a fork in one end thereof. a beading roller turnably mounted in said fork, `a pin on which said beading roller turns, centering means for the beading roller including Washers on said pin between the roller and the fork, said Washers having fingers bent alternately in opposite ldirections into rictional engagementwith the fork members and With the roller.
