Application' fued Apru 2,
This invention'relates to pumps and has especial referen'cetolthattype of pump em- 1)loved in `connection with lubricating oil i il oil therefrom.; 'the provision (of a simplified' and inn roved pump mounting comprising a nenT Varrangement of 'air vent,` drip pan, 'and islielf; while further objects 'andadvantages `Aofthe inventionwill Vbecome apparent'as the description proceeds. VThe fundamental'object of the'invention is the provision of an -oilpumpof such cheap construction'that it can'beincluded inthe sale of oil in barrel A"lots, without increasingthe price tothe cus- `temerj therebystimulating*the purchase of oil int'his form;andreducing the Cprice of oil to the individual*us'crsiby. dispensing with .thenecessity lofpurc'hasing it in vsmall quan tities as required.
In the drawings accompanying and forming a part of'thisapplication l have shown certain simple forms in which my inventive idea can be embodied although it will be understood that I do not limit myself to these details of construction.
Figure l is a side elevation of my oomplete pump in place in an oil barrel, the latter being shown in section; Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional view through my improved pump; and Figure 3 is a horizontal sectional view upon the broken line 3 3 of Figure l.
My improved pump comprises a pair of interfitting cylindrical metal pipes l and 2, the former constituting' a cylinder or casingl and the latter a plunger therefor These pipes are preferably made of thin metal, such as steel or aluminum, and the size of the inner is such as to slide easily within the outer. Tightly secured in the lower end of the outer pipe .is a suitable closure 3 having a central aperture t onwhich rests a valve 5 preferably consisting of a steel bearing ball.. This closure is held in place in any suitable manner, but preferably by bending in certain portions 6-6 of the pipe, leaving other portions 7-7 undeflected and thereby deining notches 8. Tightly secured in the lower end of the inner pipe isa similar closure 10 similarly formed with an aperpipe are 'more injurious.

valve Y12. The closure 10 'is likewise'lsecured 'in place by suitable l'crimpingofthe pipe' thereto, 'andin this connection I have 4'shown l the 'exterior ofithe upipe 2 as slightly -enlarged at this .point to form a riml3' littingslidablywithin the pipel and ksteady- Vingtlie same. Thereis no advantage inhaving the `'gipes lit snugly, but rather a disadvantage since 'accidental'dents in ythe outer Secured to the upper end of the pipe Ylis a. `suitablepacking gland "containing a lmass of softp'aclring 16 which makes a tight withithe pipe 2. llfthe wallof the "pipe l is'toothin to havethisgland: screwed Ydi rectly' thereon, a kreenforcement 17 maybe employed at this point. Tightly' secured lto Ithe top of the pipeV 2 lis Ithe "discharge spout vi8 which also preferably constitutes'a' handle iior operating thepump. This vpart-is pref` z'ei-ably lin ade of a casting of vbrass "or 'alu- `minuml and is' Itightly secured to Vthe 'tube v 2day a thread'edorfpressed joint-reinforced tbysuitable rivets 19.' The-"endcfthis/discharge 'spoutf yis 'formed-with a* downturned discharge neck 20.
Surrounding the pipe l intermediate its ends is a sleeve 21 from one side of which projects a neck 22 terminating in a hollow drip pan 23. This sleeve is internally threaded at its upper and lower ends to receive respectively the clamping nut 2d and the attaching nipple 25. This clamping nut consists of a bushing formed externally with a slightly tapered thread adapted to screw into the sleeve 2l, and interiorly with a plain cylindrical surface adapted to receive snugly the pipe l, this bushing being split as shown at 25. rThe nipple is an ordinary externally threaded plumbers nipple of suitable length screwed into the sleeve 2l and preferably fastened permanently by suitable means such as rivets 27, leaving its projecting end free to screw into an oil barrel. Internally this nipple is larger than the pipe so as to define therewith an annular passage 28. Between the nut 24- and nipple 25 the sleeve is formed with a channel 30 communicating` with the passage 31 from the interior of the drip pan 23. This pan is also provided with suitable ledges 32-32 for the reception of a measuring can or device 33 of any suitable type.
n use the nipple 25 is screwed into the ture Il on which is seated a similar ball spigot hole 35 (or sometimes the bung hole if more convenient) of anoil barrel 36, either with or without the use of of a bushing 37 depending upon the size of the hole. The shelf 23 Vcan be used as a wrench for this purpose, but the nut Qiis meanwhile preterably loosened.l Thepipe l isnow pressed down to the bottom of the barrel where the nut 2li is tightened. The plunger is easily reciprocated, the packing'lpreventing ini gress oi air on the upstroke or egress of oilupon the down stroke. made to measure oil the stroke, since .most
No attempt is users prefer to use measuring vessels, than l l"to trust the calibration of any pump. En-
trance o'tI airto the barrel is pemitted bythe passage 28 which also returns any drip, alv though drip is largelyprevented in ease the operator gives Vthe plunger a slight upward movement at the instant of leaving the device.
lVhile l have describedin considerable dedetails except as specifically recited in my several claims, as many changes can be made within the scope of my invention.

l. A barrel pump comprising, in conibina' drical pipes, one slidable within the other,
Having thus described myinvention what tion, a pair of upright interfittingcylininlet valves at the lower ends of said pipes,
a combined handle and discharge spout at the upper end of the inner pipe, and a pacling gland carried by the upper end or the outer pipe and slidably engaging the inner pipe in leak-preventing relation.
