WATER-DISGHARGE VALVE.
Application filed January 19,1923.
This invention relates to discharge valves and more particularly to discharge valves adapted for use in connection with irrigation ditches, reservoirs, or flumes, and an object. of the invention is to provide a discharge valve of extremely simple construction and which may be readily opened or closed and whi'ch may be automatically controlled by variation of the head of water in a reservoir, flume, or ditch.
Other objects and advantages will be made manifest in the following specification of an embodiment of the invention illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is a vertical section of a portion of the outlet wall of a reservoir in which the improved valve is mounted.

The valve is shown as arranged in combination with a wall lV which may represent a portion of a reservoir, tiume or ditch, having a discharge outlet 0 which preferably is of cylindrical form, and in the outer end of the outlet is arranged a valve seat consisting of a. section of a spherical shell 2. This shell is provided with a front flange 3 and with webs 4 which may be embedded in the wall Vt. The valve seat 2 is further provided with a plurality of substantially radial guide ribs 5 having inner parallel edges 6 to receive and guidably support a valve head to be described hereinafter.
Secured on the face flange 3 of the valve seat is a yoke-shaped frame 7 having a central hub 8 and being fastened as by bolts or other means 9 to the front flange of the valve seat. Slidably guided in the central hub 8 of the frame is a valve stem 10 on the inner end of which is secured a valve preferably hollow, consisting of central section 12 with a transversely curved exterior peripheral face and having an inwardly extending conical nose 13 and a rearwardly ex temling conical hub 14 secured to the inner end of the stem 10.

end of the stem is a lever having a downwardly extending arm 16 which is pivoted at- 18 to a swinging link 19 which is pivoted at 20 on the frame 7. The lever has an upwardly extending arm 17 carrying a nut 21 running on a screw-threaded shank 22, to which is secured a hand wheel 23; the inner end of the shank 22 being turnably mounted in a swinging bearing 24 pivoted on a bracket 25 suitably secured as to the face of the wall W.
In operation of the valve, the hand wheel 23 is rotated, axial movement of the screw shank 22 being prevented, and the nut 21 moves outwardly or inwardly according to the direction of rotation of the hand wheel 23. Assuming an outward movement of the nut 21, this will cause the lever arm 17 to swing outwardly and carry with it the stem 10 and the valve head, the latter moving outwardly toward the coneaved seat 2 which is complementary to the valve.
Preferably, the transverse element of the yoke 7 is of V-shaped cross-section, as indicated in dotted lines in lt ig. 2, so as to divide the stream of water passing through the outlet wall as the valve is open and, therefore, serves to reduce pressure of the water on the lever arms.
During the inward or outward movement of the valve head it is supported on the parallel inner edges of the guide ribs 5 and this prevents undue vibration or oscillation of the valve head and serves to cause a steady accurate movement of the valve inwardly or outwardly. I
As shown in Figs. 4 and 5, the valve may be automatically moved either toward or from its seat, and this may be accomplished by hydrostatic mechanism including a cylinder preferably mounted for oscillation and in which moves a piston 31 connected by a link 32 to the lower end of the arm 17 of the valve operating lever, which in this instance is shown in reversed position. The cylinder 30 is provided at each end with inlet and outlet pipes 83 leading to a fourway valve 34. As shown, the valve is positioned to permit the passage of water from the reservoir through a duct 35, and a pipe 86 attached thereto, and to the valve 84 and from thence into the inner end of the cylinder 80. This results in the outward movement of the piston 31 bringing the valve head to its closed position, as shown.
The automatic closing of the valve is obtained by direct action of a head of water pressure in the reservoir so that as the head of water in the reservoir increases, the valve will be automatically moved to its closed position before the water level reaches the discharge outlet of the valve. Conversely, if it is desired to automatically open the valve it is but necessary to reverse the position of the plug of the four-way valve 34: and this will permit the application of water under pressure to the outer side of the piston 31 and this will be'moved inwardly and the valve opened.
Further embodiments, modifications and variations may be resorted to within the spirit of the invention as here claimed.
What is claimed is 1. A discharge valve for water reservoirs comprising, in combination, a valve seat adapted to be mounted in a wall of a reservoir, an-outwardly extending frame having a hub element, a valve head having a stem guided in the hub element and movable toward and from the said seat, a lever connected to the valve stem and having a link connection with the frame, and means for actuating the lever so as to shift the stem in the hub to open or close the valve, said means consisting of hydrostatic apparatus operative by variation of head of water in the reservoir, said apparatus including a cylinder, means for admitting water from a reservoir to either end of said cylinder, and a piston movable in said cylinder connected to said lever.
2. A discharge valve for water reservoirs comprising, in combination, a valve seat adapted to be mounted in a wall of a reservoir, an outwardly extending frame having a hub element, a valve head having a stem guided in the hub element, and movable toward and from said seat, a lever connected to the valve stem and having a link connection with the frame, and means for actuating the lever so as to shift the stem in the hub to open or close the valve, said means consisting of hydrostatic apparatus operative by variation of head of water in the reservo1r, said apparatus including a cylinder, means for admittin water from a reservoir to either end of said cylinder, a four-way valve in said admitting means, and a piston movable in said cylinder connected to said lever. 3. A discharge valve for water reservoirs comprising, in combination, a valve seatadapted to be mounted in a wall of a reservoir, an outwardly extending frame having a hub element, a valve head having a stem guided in the hub element and movable toward and from:the said seat, a lever connected to the valve stem and having a link connection with the frame, and means for actuating the lever so as to shift the stem in the hub to open or close the valve, said means consisting of hydrostatic apparatus operative by variation of head of water in the reservoir and including a primary controlling valve.
4. A valve comprising a ring-like body having a front flange and exterior reinforcing webs adapted to be imbedded in masonry about the discharge end of an outlet therethrough, said body having a seat formed thereon, a closure member adapted to seat upon s id body upon that side disposed toward t e entrance to the outlet so as to close said outlet, and means for forcing said closure inwardly into the outlet so as to open said outlet.
5. In a masonry structure having an outlet passage therethrough, a valve comprising a ring-like body presenting interior spherical surfaces imbedded in the structure adjacent the discharge end of the outlet, a closure adapted to seat upon that side of said body disposed toward the entrance to the outlet so as to close the outlet, and means for forcing the closure inwardly toward the entrance to the outlet and away from saidbody so as to open said outlet.
6. In a masonry structure having an outlet passage therethrough, a valve comprising a ring-like body presenting interior spherical surfaces imbedded in the structure adjacent the discharge end of the outlet, a closure adapted'to seat upon said body so as to close the outlet, and means for forcing the closure inwardly toward the entrance to the outlet and away from said body so as to open sald outlet, said ring-like body being provided with exterior projections which are imbedded in the masonry.
7. A valve comprising a ring-like body having exterior projections formed thereon adapting it to be imbedded in a masonry structure about an outlet therethrough, a pointed closure member adapted to seat upon one side of said body, and means disposed adjacent the other side of said body for moving said closure member away from said body so as to open said outlet.
8. A valve comprising a ring-like body having exterior projections formed thereon adapting it to be imbedded in a masonry structure about an outlet therethrough, a pointed closure member adapted to seat upon one side of said body, and hydraulic means disposed adjacent the other side of said body for moving said closure member away from said body so as to open said outlet.
9. A valve comprising a ring-like body having flanges formed upon the exterior surface thereof and webs connecting 'said flanges, said body presenting interior spherical surfaces and having radial guide ribs mounted upon the interior thereof, a pointed closure adapted to seat upon said body, and means for forcing said closure away from its scat between said ribs so as to open the valve;
10. In combination with a dam structure having an outlet therethrough, a valve seat imbedded in the structure at the discharge end of the outlet, a closure member adapted to seat upon said seat, and means for forcing said closure member into the outlet away from said seat so as to open the outlet.

In combination with a dam structure having an outlet therethrough, a valve seat imbedded in the structure at the discharge end of the outlet a closure member adapted to seat upon said seat, and hydraulically operated means for forcing said closure member into the outlet away from said seat so as to open the outlet.
12. In a dam structure having an outlet therethrough, a valve seat embedded in the structure adjacent the discharge end of the outlet, a yoke mounted upon the seat and extending over the discharge end of the outlet, a pointed closure having a stem slidable upon the yoke, a lever pivoted upon said stem, a link pivoted to said lever and to said yoke, and means for actuating said lever whereby the closure may be moved toward the discharge end of the outlet so as to seat upon said seat, or may be moved toward the entrance of the outlet so as to open said outlet.
13. In a dam structure having an outlet therethrough, a valve seat imbedded in the structure adjacent the discharge end of the outlet, a yoke mounted upon the seat and extending over the discharge end of the outlet, a pointed closure having a stem slidable upon the yoke, a lever pivoted upon said stem, a link pivoted to said lever and to said yoke, and means for actuating said lever whereby the closure may be moved toward the discharge end of the outlet so as to seat upon said seat, or may be moved toward the entrance of the outlet so as to open said outlet, said means being hydraulially operated.
14. In a wall structure having an outlet therethrough, a seat member having exterior projections formed thereon imbedded in the wall structure about the discharge end of the outlet, said seat member having a V yoke secured thereto extending over the outlet,-a pointed closure adapted to seat upon said seat member and having a stem slidable upon said yoke, a lever pivoted to said stem, a link pivoted to said yoke and to said lever, and means for actuating said link so as to cause the' closure to move toward the discharge end of the outlet, so as to close the outlet, or move the closure toward the entrance to the outlet so as to open the outlet.
15. In a wall structure having an outlet therethrough, a seat member having exterior projections formed thereon imbedded in the wall structure about the discharge end of the outlet, said seat member having a yoke secured thereto extending over the outlet, a pointed closure adapted to seat upon said seat member and having a stem slidable upon said yoke, a lever pivoted to said stem, 3 link pivoted to said yoke and to said lever, and means for actuating said link so as to cause the closure to move towardthe discharge end of the outlet, so as to close the outlet, or move the closure toward the entrance to the outlet so as to open the outlet, said seat member being provided with a replaceable seat.

A water discharge valve adapted to be mounted upon dam structures and the like comprising an annular body providing a valve seat adapted to be 'mounted upon the discharge end of an outlet through the dam, a closure adapted to seat upon that side of the body disposed toward the entrance to the outlet, guide means mounted upon the opposite side of the body, sald closure having a stem extending through the body and slidably mounted upon said guide means, and means for causing said stem to move said closure toward the entrance to the outlet and away from said body so as to open the valve.
17. A water discharge valve adapted to be mounted upon dam structures and the like comprising an annular body providing a valve seat adapted to be mounted upon the discharge end of an outlet through the dam, a closure adapted to seat upon that side of the body disposed toward the entrance to the outlet, guide means mounted upon the opposite side of the body, said closure having a stem extending through the body and slidably mounted upon said guide means, and hydraulic means for causing said stem to move said closure toward the entrance to the outletand away from said body so as to open the valve.
