BUDD MANUFACTURING COMPANY PORATION OF PENNSYLVANIA.
0F PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, A COR- DEVICE FOR- FILING OR ABRADING.
Application filed June 19, 1922. Serial No. 569,313.
`fly Vinvention relates to an improved device for filing or abrading. Y
The chief object of my invention is to provide an abrading or filing device which is simple in structure and efficient in operation, and which, in operation, is effective in removing a considerable amount of material from the work at each working stroke.
A further object of my invention is to provide an abrading or filing device in which the file or abrading tool is automatically removed from contact with the work, when the device is moved in one direction, so that the file acts on the work in one direction only.
Further objects, and objects relatingto details and economies of operation and construction, will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow. In one instance, I accomplish the objects of my invention bythe devices and means described in the following specification. My invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the appended claims. A structure constituting a preferred embodiment of'my invention is illustrated in the accompanying` drawing, forming a part of this specification, in which:
Fig. 1 is a view of the device in side elevation.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged, fragmentary sectional view, taken on line '3-3 of Fig. 2, and
Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 3 but showing the file removed from contact with the work.
In the drawing, the same reference numerals refer to the same parts throughout the several views, and the sectional views are taken looking in the direction of the arrows at the ends of the section lines.
In the metal working art it frequently becomes necessary to reduce or file down surfaces of the work. For example, in making large dies it is a common practice to file down the surface .of the die. This work, heretofore, has been accomplished, largely, by the manual application and manipulation' of hand files, and, consequently, has been slow and tedious, thereby adding to the cost of making the die, besides imposing considerable physical labor on the work- It is vamongrthe special purposes of my present invention to provide an abrading or filing device of simple structure whereby this work may be accomplished expeditiously andV easily, the cost thereof reduced, and the workmen largely relieved of the physical and tedious toil. In carrying out my invention, I purpose to provide an abrading or filing device wherein the abrad ing tool or le is moved back and forthover the surface to'be reduced and is automatically raised from or lowered into-contact with the surface of the work according to the 'direction of movement of the device, the back and forth movements of the device being utilized to effect the automatic raising and lowering of the abrading tool or file, whereby the tool or file becomes effective in performing its worl; only when the device moves in one direction, and is with-..
drawn from working position when the device is moved in the opposite direction.
My invention is capable of beingpcarried out in many and various practical embodiments.
In the accompanying drawing ilhave shown oneV illustrative practical form of device em bodying my invention. The work or piece to be filed down is indicated at 10, over or upon the surface of which the abrading tool or file, 11, is adapted tofbe moved back` and forth. This tool is carried by a suitable holder or carrier, 12, to which it is secured in any suitable or convenient manner, as for eX- ample by means of clamp devices, 13, in such relation as permits its abrading or file surface to be presented towards the surface of the work. The holder or carrier, 12, is provided, at the ends thereof, with handles, 14, by'which itis moved back and forth over the work. The holder or carrier, 12, is supported by supporting members, shown in this instance as wheels, 17, which rest upon the surface of the work. In the particular arrangement shown, to which, however, my invention' is not to be limited, the supporting members, 17, are employed in pairs, the members of which are respectively disposed at vopposite sides of the holder or carrier, 12, and are carried by spindles, 16. YThe holder or carrier,12^, isprovided withtransverse slots or openings, 15A which Yare inclined in the direction of therlength of the holder or carrier,
12. The spindles, 16, extend through these
