Application filed-July 1,'1925. Serial No. 42,862.
This invention relates to a lock for slid-r ing doors, the general object of the ihrention being tol provide a/lock, the parts of which lwill be entirely enclosed in the doors when the bolt is retracted so that there will be no projections to catch .and damage garments of persons passing between the doors.
e another object of the invention is to provide means whereby a bolt on vone door will l0 engage a latch member carried by the other door, with means onV one door for operating the bolt and means on the other door for operating the latch member.
A further object of the invention is to provide ay key operated member for locking the latch member in latching position.' K A.
rIhis invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the `combination and arrangement of the several illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing my invention in detail, reference ywillY be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the sev eral views, and in which Figure 1 is a view through the two parts of the lock, with the cover plates removed therefrom.
Figure 2 is a section on line 2-2 of Figure 1, and showing the lock parts in the door.
Figure 3 is asection on line 3-3 .of Figure 2.
Figure 41 is a. perspective view of the latch proper. v
-Figure 5 is a view of the locking bar of the latch member.
Figure 6 is a view of the key or'operating said bar. Y y In Athese views, l indicates a casing which is adapted to be placed in the door A and 2 indicates a casing which is adapted to be placed in the companion door B. An L- shaped bolt 3 is carriedV by the casing 1 and said bolt is provided with a latch head l and an L-shaped slot 5 which is engaged by a pin 6 carried by the casing. The bolt is provided with the rack teeth 7 which eX- tend along a part of the upperhorizont-al edge thereof and down along the vertical edge thereof, and these teeth are engaged by a pinion 8 on the knob stem 9, the knob of CAD ythebolt will be retracted.
arranged in the top part of the casing andA parts, to be hereinafterv fully described,
which isy show nat 10. A block 1,1 is ar- .ranged in the casing and'carrles a spring 12 which bears against the bolt andV .tends f to hold the same inv horizontal position, as shown 1n ull lines in Figure l. When the knob isV turned,V the pinion7 engaging thef rack teeth, will iirst cause the bolt. to'be tilted by forcing its inner end downwardly and then the bolt will'be moved rearwardly l on .an incline, as shown in dotted lines in Figure l., the bolt being guided by the'pin* ion 6 engaging the L-shaped slot 5. v4Thus vengages the upper edge of the bolt and also A block 13 vis acts as stop for the same by being en- I gaged by aprojection 14 on the bolt. The
lower edge rot the bolt is recessed, as at l5y for engaging the bottom .wall of the open-p.` .ing in the case when the bolt is in projected position. y This arrangement firmly holds the.`
bolt against play when inprojectedposition.
Theucasing 2 carries a latch member 16 which is pivotally supportedin the casing by means oi' the tubular vprojections 17 thereon engaging bearing openings in the casing and in its cover. This latch member is provided with a latch part 18 for engaging the latch head l Oil bolt 3 so as to inter-lock withthe bolt and said latch member 16 is held inlatching position by the spring 19 which tends tohold a shoulder Q0 on the rear part of the latch member against the stop pin 21 in the casing. The latch member is rocked by a knob stem 22 passing through the casing andhaving the knobs 23 attached thereto.
In order to hold the latch member in its upper or latching position, I provide a sliding block 24 which engages the under part of the latch member and prevents it from being lowered. This block is slidably mounted Ona guiding strip 25 which is prof vided with a groove 26 and an opening 27, one end ofV the opening registering with the keyholes 28 in the casing so that the key will enter this space. he block is provided with a slot 29 which receives a pin 30 carried by the casing and the upper end Oi the block is provided with a pair of rounded shoulders 31` for engaging the rounded end of a spring 32 carried by a block 33 which willk hold the block 24 in either its projected or retracted positions. The lower edge o the block is provided with a projection 34 and the rack teeth 85 Which engage the groove 26 in the strip 25 and thev key 36 is 'formed With a pinion 8T l'or engaging' the rack t oth 35 so that when the key is turned, the pinion engaging,` the teeth, will slide the' blosl;V 2e to projected or retracted position.
From the foregoing, it Will be seen that with the block 24 retracted, the latch meinber 18 Will give and move downwardly under the pressure exerted thereon by the beveled end of the bolt 3, as the doors come together and the bolt is in.l projected position or if the bolt is projected alter the doors have beenA closed. This will locir the doors together and` if they are to be opened, it will be necessary to lower the latch member 18 before the doors can be opened. rllhe latch member is lowered by the turningot the knob stem 22, but thisv cannot be done it the block 2li is in projected position. In this ease, it Will be lirst necessary to retract the. block by neans of. thel ley before the latch member can, be lowered.. Then by turning the knob stem 9, the bolt retracted to its dotted line position shown in Figure l, sothat there will be no projecting parts from the edges ot the doors.
It is thought vfrom the foregoing` description that the advantages andnovel features of my invention will, be readily appirirent.A
l desire itA to be understood that l may make changes inthe construction and in the combination and arrangement oit the several parte, providedV that such changes fall Within thescope ofthe appendedl claims.
3 can be lVhat I claim is l. A lock. of the class described, comprising'a pair of casing's, a bolt in one easing, a latch member in the other casing engaging;
the bolt whenv the Sani@ is projected, means ing,` a pair of easings, a bolt in one casln,l having,x an L-shaped slot in one end, a, latch head on the other end, a.` pin in the casingV and disposed in said slot, manually operatedV means having engagementV with the bolt formoving' the same in the casing, shoulders on opposite sides of the bolt adapted toengaee means on the casing,- to limit theniovement of the bolt in one directiomalatch member in the other casing,` engaging. the bolt When the same is projected, means for manipulating the latch. member, for locking; the latch member. in latching position,
on the blok and a key having a; pinion thereon ior engaging the rack teeth,
