The invention is designed to provide means oi simple construction and eihcient operation for opening and closing gates or doors, such as doors of garages, by the passage of the automobile, and the invention consists in the features and combination and arrangement oit parts hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

Each door is mounted on a vertical rotatable post l. it its upper end each port has connected thereto operating mechanism consisting ot rods la, lb, extending trom arms or segments 2, 2. These rods are connected respectively to one end ot' sleeves or barrels 3, 3a. These sleeves receive at their other ends slidably the rods l, il having heads 5, 5, at their inner ends with springs 6, 6a interposed between said heads and theends ot the sleeve. These rods el, la are operatedY through links l5 by levers 7, 7, pivoted at S, 8EL on pins guided in slots 9 in lined standards l0.
The ends of the pins bear on springs ll seated in the standards so that the pivots together with the levers can have movement up and down and the levers have pivotal movement about the pins-8, 8a. rlhe lower ends ot the levers are pivotally connected to the stirrups or treadlcs l2, l2 which are pivotally mounted in suitable bearings as shown.
ln the drawings l have marked a line af-x on each of the views indicating the normal center' position of the sleeve 3, 3a, when the doors are closed and all the parts are in normal position, and the amount -of movement of the sleeve under different actions can be judged from the position of the sleeves in the several diagrams relative to these lines ln the operation ot the apparatus sup pose the vehicle moves in the arrow direction in Fig. 3, the etl'ect will be to draw upon the rod l and the head 5 thereon will be moved leitward and through the spring` 6 the vsleeve 3 will be pulled le'itward and through the rod lb the door post will be given a quarter turn to open through an angle ol 9G degrees. Ars soon as the wheel passes over the treadle l2 said treadle will rise under the action of the springs l1 which return the parts, lever and left hand rod to normal position, leaving the door in its open position.
This normali position oft the sleeve vis shown in Figs. l and 2.
The action above described has not affected the right hand set of connections eX- cept taking up the lost motion space or slaclr in the sleeve 3 as in Fig. 3, and bringing the spring 6l against the head 5, but `the rod la, lever` 7" and stirrup are not atlfected. Vhen, however, the wheel or the vehicle continuing in the. arrow direct-ion,- Figs. 3 and t, passes over and depresses the stirrup l2 towards the right, it swings the lever 7 at its upper end leftward and pushes on the rod a which thus through its head 5'@ will press on the spring 6b, push rod la leitward, and this through the segment will rotate the verticalsha'tt and close the door as shown in Fig. 4l. After the vehicle passes away from the stirrup 12a, said stirrup will rise under the action of the springs ll, acting on the connections and tne connections at the right will assume normal position shown in Fig. l, ready to act when the vehicle moves from right to lett. This action of the parts is shown in Figs. 5 and 6, but need not be described in detail further than to say that it is in reverse. order to that above described in connection with Figs. 3 and ll, the direction ot movement of the vehicle being indicated by the arrow.
The mechanism above described is disclosed herein as an example of one way in which my invention may be carried into effect.

2. in combination in apparatus for opening and closing doors, a treadle on each side of the door, a lever extending upwardly trom each treadle and pivotally connected to the upper part oit said treadle, a yielding support for said levers, said levers being piv' oted intermediate oit' their height to said support, and connections from the upper ends oi' the levers to the doors, said connections including slack motion means whereby when the connections on one side of the door are operated to open or close the saine, the connection on the other side ot' the door will perform its lost motion action, substantially as described.

In combination with a swinging door, a treadle on each side thereof to be operated by the vehicle approaching or departing from said do r, and a connection between each tr-eadle and the door, each connection comprising a sleeve, a rod connecting said sleeve with the door, and a rod between the sleeve and the treadle and slidable in the sleeve, said last -mentioned rod having a headed end with a spring between it and the outer end of the sleeve, and a second spring at the inner end of the sleeve, said springs being spaced apart for the slack movement ot the headed end of the rod between them, said springs cushioning both the opening and closing` of the door, said springs also forming a part oic the power transmitting connections between the treadles and the door, each treadle because of the slack motion connection aiiorded by the sleeve with its spaced apart springs remainingl in normal position when the treadle on the opposite side of the door is Operated, substantially as described.
