My present inventionis ahandle intended more particularly for use upon automobile doors but capable of use Wherever a lock or latch is to be operated. The primary object of the invention is to provide an attractive handle of high quality which niay be produced at a low cost. This object, and other objects'which will hereinafter appear, are attained in such a device as is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and the invention resides in certain novel features which will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of a handle and the spindle on which it is mounted, showing my invention;
Figure 2 is a view in perspective showing the parts of the handle disassembledl but in their proper relative positions.
ln the drawing, the reference numeral 1 denotes the spindle which operates the door latch (not shown) and is rotatably litted through an escutcheon plate 2 secured upon the door. A spring 3 is coiled around the spindle within the door between the 'escutcheon plate and an abutment Washer 4t secured on the spindle, While at the outer side of the door a sleeve or tubular stem 5 encloses the spindle between the escutcheon plate and the handle, The handle consists essentially of a scalp plate-,6, a scalp frame 7,
and fillers 8, the scalp plate and scalp frame being of brass, nickel, silver or other metals or materials which will lend themselves readily to attractive and lasting ornamentation and will impart a pleasing appearance to the device while the fillers are of steel, sheet iron or other cheaper metals which will Jfurnish desired strength and rigidity for the handle.` In the illustrated preferred form of the invention, the front side of the scalp frame is open, as shown at 9, and a linish plate 10 is fitted in the 'frame to cover the opening. This nishplate or panel may be of met-al, bakelite, hard rubber, Celluloid or other substance best suited for the particulail finish which may be desired in any given instance, but the finish plate may be omitted entirely and the scalp Jframe have its front side integrally closed and ornamented. The fillers 8 are of proper form and size to lit closely within the scalp frame and the. scalp plate rest-s, at its margin, against the rear filler, the edge of the scalp frame being crimped over the scalp plate, as at 11, to

secure the several plates firmly together. A. depression 12 is formed in the scalp plate to provide a seat for the stem 5 and an opening 13 for the spindle is provided through the seat, said seat and opening being located at the center of the plate or near an end thereof accordingly as it is desired to have a 'l or an L handle.. The opening 13 is of an angular outline corresponding to the cross section of the spindle so that the rotation of the handle will eli'ect turning of the spindle and a similar opening 14 is formed in the rear liller to receive the spindle while a circular opening 15 is' provided in the front. liller to receive the reduced circular tenon 1G at thc end of the spindle. The front end portion of the Wall of the opening 15 is flared and the end of the tenon 16 is upset therein to secure the filler on the spindle. While for convenience in manufacturing, two fillers are preferably employed, they may be combined in a single filler with an opening therethrough corresponding to the combined openings 14, 15.
It will be readily seen that the construction employed by me provides a high grade handle at a low production cost, and that the handle may be given any desired finish to match or harmonize with the finish of the body to which it is applied. While the shell consisting of the scalp plate and the scalp frame is shown as of a flat rectangular form, it may be of any other desired configuration and the front side may be arcuate either transversely or longitudinally or both transversely and longitudinally;
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is
1. The combination of a shell, a filler plate in the shell to be secured on the end of a spindle, a scalp plate closing the back of the shell and bearing marginally against the within its area bearing upon the filler plate, a spindle passing through said depression and secured permanently to the filler plate, an cscutcheon and n,ai sleeve housing the spindle and seating at one end in said depresion in the scalp plate and at its opposite end in the escutcheon.
In a door handle, the combination of a spindle having a shouldered outer end, a handle bar rigidly attached on the outer shouldered end of said spindle -by upsetting ASSGNOR TO NORTH & JUDI) 0F NEW BRITAIN, CONNECTICUT.
` filler plate and also having a depression the end thereof upon the bar, a face plate for said handle bar, a casing for said har having flanges on its front edges overlapping the edges thereof and embracing the edges of said face plate, and a real' finishing plate,
the edges of said casing being clamped upon the edges of said rear finishing plate.
3. In a door handle, the combination of a vsplindle, a handle bar rigidly attached on the 10 end thereof, a face plate for said handle bar,
a Casing for said bar having flanges on its front edges overlapping the edges thereof and embracing the edges of said face plate,
and a rear finishing plate, the rear edges of said easing being clamped upon the edges of said rear finishing plate.
