' M. A. FEINSTEIN v HEEL Filed Oct. 5 1925 A TTORN E YS.
Patented 1926 xonnrs ENDFFIQCE"; k

Application filed October 5, -1a2' 8er1a1' m. 60,468. i
It is an object of the invention to provide a'heel of the character specified where'a' rubber lift is secured to the heel in such manner that during wear the covering of the heel is not displaced or shifted, thereby retaining the finished and neat a pearance of the heel throughout the use 0 the .shoe to which the heel is secured.
. A further object aims at providing means for permitting a rubber lift to be secured to a covered wooden heel so that the junction of the heel at the lift is secure against the entrance of foreign substances.
A still further object aims at providing comparatively inexpensive means for preventing forel substances from entering the junction lie a tween a wooden heel and the rubber lift attached thereto.
With these and other equally important objects in view the invention comprises the means described in the following specification, particularlypointed out in the claims forming a' part thereof, and illustrated in the accompanying-drawing, in which:
Fig. 1 is partly section, partly side view v of a wooden heel constructed in accordance with my invention;
Fig. 2 is a detail section.
As well known, wooden heels used for ladies shoes are covered with satin, soft leather or other pliable material adaptedlto give the heel a finished and neat appearance.
Such coverin surrounds the entire heel, but a small strip overlaps the edges of the heel bottom and is secured thereto by glueing-or in any other preferred or approved manner. In securing a rubber lift to'the heel in the ordinary manner such as by nails, the resilienc of the rubber transmits certain strains an thrusts onto the bottom, causing a dislocation of the covering fastened to the heel bottom. In addition, foreign' matter can easily enter between the heel and the lift thereby eventually'loosening the lift.
-indicated by 13, which comprises a rubber or rubber composition'to which is embodiment of the; invention,
In accordance with my resent invention,
these difficulties are entire y obviated.
Referring to Fig. 1, 1 0 desi ates a wooden heel which is covered b a ayer offabricor leather 11 and which mtimatelyhugs the heel and completely conforms to the contour thereof. The fabric 11 is drawn around the bottom edges of the heel and terminates adjacent thereto as indicated at 12. To.this heel is .secured a composite lift generally ift 14 of vulcanized a thin disk of fiber 15. The composite lift 13 is secured to theheel by nails (not shown) or in any other approved or preferred manner. When so secured the lift '13 slightly protrudes beyond'tho thickness of the heeland the heel is then out down to conform to the cross section of the heel. Subsequently the heel 'is subjected to a bufiing operation which causes a compression of the fiber disk at the edge and a slight spreading of the same as indicated at 16. This spreading of the fiber disk entails a sealing effect at the junction ofthev rubber lift and the heel bottom thereby'efliciently preventing foreign substances from wedging between the heel and the lift. i From the foregoing follows that the composite liftainsures 'suflicient resiliency dur- 1n vies rigidity at the-heel bottom to prevent the improved heel effectively obviates' 'the ossibility of foreign substances wedging etween the heel and the lift. "Whilethe drawing discloses a preferred I various changes and alterations may be made without departing from the purview of the invention. I, therefore, do not limit myself to the-details of construction, as shown, nor to the materials used, but include all changes walking and at the same time pro-' dislocation of the covering. Furthermore,
and variations constituting departures withe.
in'the sco e of the invention as defined in the appen ed claims;
"I claim: v
A heel, including a body portion, a covering therefor drawn around the bottom edges ofsaid body. portion, a'resilient lift secured to said body portion, and a compressible member interposed between said'lift and said body portion having an upset outer edge for preventing displacement of said covering on 5 the heel bottom during wear and sealing the junction between said lift and said body portion, said upsetting being eflected during the compression of the protruding ortion of the compressible member durin t e bufiing operation towhich the assem led heel is sub-' 1 jected to.
In wltness whereof'I ziflix my signature.
MORRIS A. FEINSTEIN.
