CLOTHES WASHER.
Application filed April 2, 1825. Serial No. 26,056.
- This invention lrelates to an improved clothes washing accessory adapted to be re-l movably placed within an vordinary copper or galvanized wash boiler for the purpose t of assistingin the proper boiling'of soiled clothes. It is van object o-f this invention to provide an ordinary wash boiler with an auxiliary device adapted'l to be placed within the boiler upon the bottom thereof, said device having the base thereof arranged with a transverse partition and' with side recesses to materially increase the efiiciency of the auxiliary device so that clothes within the boiler may be thoroughly boiled.
It is also an object of this invention to provide an auxiliary device for a wash boiler, said device having a base of improved construction to cause a sheet of water to circulate through the boiler under and around said base to canse` the auxiliary device to wash or boil clothes more efficiently.
It is a further object of this invention to provide an ordinary clothes boiler with an auxiliary boiler device wherein a heavy base member has apertured upright pipes connected thereto and has the interior. of the base divided by means of a transverse partition to cause a forced circulation through each of the upright pipes independently of the other Vto facilitate boiling` of clothes within the boiler.
Itis an important object of this invention to provide an improved auxiliary boiler device for userin an ordinary wash boiler, said boiler device being of simplel and improved constructionwith the base thereof designed to not only improve the circulation of the hot water within the boiler by means of an increased circulation of the water in the form of a sheet through elongated recesses in the sides of the base, but also having partition means within the base whereby each of a plurality of steam spray pipes may be independently supplied with steam pressure generated in the respective base chambers of the device.
Other and further important objects of this invention will be apparent from the dis- 59 closures in the specification and the accompanying drawings.
. This invention (in a preferred form) is illustrated in the drawings and hereinafter more fully described.
On the drawings:
F igurel is a side elevation of an ordinary clothes boiler having yone of the side walls thereof brolren away to illustrate the improved clothes washer device embodying the principles of this invention.
Figure 2 is a bottom plan view of the clothes washer removed from the boiler.
Figure 3 is an enlarged longitudinal section taken on line IIL-HI of Figure 2.
Figure 4: is a transverse section taken on line IV-IV of Figure 3.
As shown on the drawings: o o
The reference numeral l indicates an ordinary copper or galvanized tin washboiler with the cover removed. The boiler is adapted to haveremovably placed therein a clothes washer device embodying the principles of this invention and comprising a heavy iron hollow base embracing the top plate 2 and a downwardly directed peripheral iiange 3. The base plate has straight sides while the ends thereof are rounded or semi-circular as clearly illustrated in Figure 2. l Each of the side fiange walls of the base has the lower margin thereof cut away toafford an elongated longitudinal recess or openingi leaving the end portions of the base iiange in the form of legs which are adapted to rest upon the inner face of the bottom of the boiler as illustrated in Figure l.A The base is provided with a middle transverse partitionor wall 5 the bottom ,edge
of which terminates in the plane of the edges of the recesses d. The transverse partition y5 divides the interior of the base into a pair lof chambers 6. Integrally formed on the top of the base section are a plurality of upwardly directed sleeves or collars 7 which are internally threaded to removably receive the lower threaded ends of a plurality of upright spray pipes or nozzles 8 each of which is provided with a plurality of rows Lof spray apertures 9. Rigidly secured on the top of each of the spray pipes 8 is a cap 10.
The operation is as follows:
The improved clothes washer of this invention is adapted to be placed within an ordinary clothes boiler with the heavy base thereof resting or standing upon the inner face of the bottom plate of the boiler. The base section is made heavy and may be constructed of cast metal such as iron having a copper coating, The base section is purposely made heavy so that the improved device will remain firmly seated in position within the boiler and furthermore be of sulicient strength to rigidly support the apertured stand-pipes.
After the improved clothes washer has been placed in position within the boiler l the boiler is lilled with water and s'oi'led clothes with the l vel of the water below the level ot' the closure caps l() of the pipes 8 (Figure l). The boi-ler with its lid in posit-ion may now be placed on an ordinary stove or a gas stove as the case may be, to permit the water within the boiler to be heated to a boiling temperature by the heat from the stove. Then the water is boiling within the boiler, circulation is, of course, set up so that the clothes will be boiled to facilitate washing ot the same.
By using the improved clothes washer of this invention in an ordinary type ot Wash boiler the circulation of water and` steam is materially increased. This is brought about by the improved construction of the base of the device which as clearly illus# trat-ed in Figure 3 is provided with the side elongated recesses el. These recesses are disposed opposite to one another and permit a sheet ot hot Water to pass through the sides of the base and upwardly over the top thereof in substantially the 'form ot a sheet or ribbon of boiling water so that an increased circulation ot' boiling water is obtained within the boiler to thoroughly agit-ate the clothes to loosen or boil out the dirt contained therein. In addition to the im'- proved circulation ot the water by means of the side recesses in the base ot' the device the transverse partition 5 in the base divides said base into a plurality ot chambers so that a steam pressure is generated in each ot' said chambers with a pressure head Sullicient to permit a forced upward circulation ot steam through each ot' the apertured steam spray pipes S independently of one another. rl`he steam under pressure passing upwardly through the respective pipes 8 is forced out of the apertures 9 in all directions and into the clothes within the boiler so that the clothes are quickly and thoroughly boiled.
The base is made heavy for the purpose of forming a stable device which will not be readily moved and which will be of a weight sullicient to otiset the ypressure of the steam generated in the chambers of said base so that the pressure of the steam in the spray pipes 8 will not upset or move the de vice within the boiler.
The improved clothes washer device of this invention with the partition and the heavy Abase for holding the apertured spray pipes, is an advance in the Washing art and affords a means whereby boiling of clothes is greatly improved so ythat clothes may be thoroughly boiled within a 'very short time within an ordinary clothes boiler so that steam under :pressure is forced outwardly' through the spray pipes through the clot-hes and through the boiling water Within said boiler. The chambered arrangement of the base permits each of the spray pipes S to be independently provided with steam pressure from its respective base cham-ber, while the elongated side recesses in the base greatly increase the Lcirculation of water and steam within the boiler Iand through the clothes.
l am aware that 'many changes may be made and numerous details of construction may be varied through a wide ra-nge with` out departing from the principle of this invention, and I therefore do not purpose limiting the patent granted hereon, otherwise than necessitated by the prior art.
l claim as my invention:
The combination with a clothes boiler, of a clothes washer device disposed therein, comprising a heavy base plate, a downwardly directed flange integrally formed on the periphery of said base plate to afford a stand for the base plate, said flange having the side .vallsthereof cut away to ali'ord a pair of oppositely disposed longitudinal recesses, a transverse partition integrally formed within said base dividing the interi'or thereof into a plurality of chambers, the lower edge 'or' said artition terminating in the plane of the e ges of the cut away portions of the base side Walls, and apertured spray pipes projecting vertically from said base plate andl communicating with said chambers therein.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto subscribed my name.
