Description

Patented Jan. 26, 1875.

Steam Distri bufur for Fur naces.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALFRED B. COREY, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
IMPROVEMENT IN STEAM-DISTRIBUTERS FOR FURNACES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 159,156, dated January 26, 1875 application filed July 18, 1874.
To all whom it may concern of which the following is a specification:
This invention consists in a peculiarly-constructed. perforated distributor arranged beneath the grate-bars of a furnace, for equally distributing steam, (usually spent or exhaust steam,) or water in the shape of spray,'beneath the grate-bars of a furnace, whereby, while the lower part of the fire, which is in a measure inefi'eotive, is equally checked or dampened, the upper or active and effective part of the fire is uniformly brightened, or nearly so, by reason of the decomposition which takes place as the steam or vapor from the sprayed water passes through the carbon in the lower part of the furnace, and which adds to the combustion or gives more flame. The invention also provides for a more uniform cooling of the grate-bars and prevention of clinkers, the lower part of the fuel on fire being kept from excessive heat and fusion.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a longitudinal section of a furnace with my improvement applied; Fig. 2, a longitudinal vertical section of the steam or Water dis tributer on a larger scale; Fig. 3, a plan of the same.
A A represent the grate-bars of a furnace, and B the ash-pit thereof. 0 is the perforated distributer, of spheroidal or partially spheroidal shape, arranged within the ash-pit, in central relation With the grate, and having connected with it a pipe, D, through which spent or exhaust steam, or the water from the feed-pipe of a boiler, is introduced, it being preferred to use exhaust steam, in which case the perforations b of the distributor may be larger and less numerous than when water from the feed-pipe is forced in the form of spray through the perforated distributor, the perforations b in all cases giving a radial direction to the distributed steam or spray, as clearlyindicated in Fig.1 of the drawing, and whereby an equable distribution, without complication of parts, is obtained.
I am aware that air and steam have been supplied to hydrocarbon-oil furnaces by perforated pipes; but such is not claimed by me.
I claim The combination, with the grate-bars of a furnace, of the spheroidal or partially spheroidal distributer 0, having the perforations b and supply-pipe D, the whole constructed to operate substantially as herein described, for distributing steam in the form of spray directly beneath the grate-bars of an ordinary furnace, for the purpose specified.
