Description

UNITED STATES PATENT GEEICE.
aHENRY T. WEST, 0E PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN LAWN-MOWERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 159,131 dated January 26,1875; application filed August 21, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it knovn that I, HENRY T. WEST, of the city and county of Philadelphia, in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in LaWn-Mowing Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which Will enable others vskilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of this speciication, and in which- Figure 1 is a plan, and Fig. 2 a side elevation, of the said improvement.
The same parts are denoted by the same letters in both figures. y
This invention consists in the construction and arrangement ofthe frame and gearing.
A A in the drawing-represents the carry-r ing-Wheels, upon which is supported the frame ofthe machine. C is the handle, by which it is pushed forward, and which is connected to the frame by the bailpieces D D bolted to the.
handle, and pivoted to the frame at E E. The frame of the machine consists of two side pieces, B B, united by the stationary scalloped cutter-bar F, to which are rigidly connected the standards G and H. On the axle I is loosely mounted a bevel-gear, J, whose hub is formed into ratchet-teeth, engaging with a pawl or a backing-ratchet, K, made fast on said axle. This gear J meshes with a bevelpinion, L, supported on standard G, and forming the hub ofthe crown-Wheel M, Whose teeth mesh with the bevel-pinion N, which is supported on standard H, as shown in the drawing. To the pinion N is cast or rigidly secured the crank-Wheel O, which, through the interven tion of pitman l?, reciprocates the scalloped cutter Q in theusual manner.
In order to render the height of the cut adjustable, the rear'end of the frame is supported on the roller R, from which rise two standards, S S, tting into lugs on the side pieces B B, and to which the latter may be secured at different heights by meansof set screws T T, thus varying the inclination 0i' the frame, and, consequently, the height of cut.
NVhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States,
The arrangement, substantially as shown, of the fra-me B B F, constructed as described, the standards G H, the gear J, supported on. the axle, the pinion L, crown-wheel M, pinion N, and crank-wheel O.
HENRY T. WEST.'
