Description

This invention" relatesJ to an improved i' method of making shims o f the type which are used between the parts of adlvlded bearing to hold the samey in. spaced relation,
5 and more particularly Itothe'soV-called lami# binder ofA relatively softer V Babbitt metal Yort-he like. I I V,A particular object of the invention is to provide a shim,':a leaf,A of which maybe re moved without disturbing the remaining leaves, and which wi'llrequire'no work thereon such as scrapingawaythe vbinding ma- A further object is to provide la shim which can be manufactured economlcally and in quantity without sacrificing the'precision vnecessary in such articles. Y Referring to the drawings, 1n which Il have illustrated one embodiment"ofiny` in;
vention Figure 1 isa top plan view of a bed, thershim being shown in place thereon, and
the head of the Vpress being representedinj;
Figure is aview similar to. Figure `2 and shows the binder after havingbeen the laminas. of-the shim infixed relationyl igure 4 is a top plan n shim; and Y Figurelv d Referring to the drawings' in`detail',.5 indicatesthe bed of afpower press,and 6 the head or pressure exerting member there0f,vl
the formerof which is suitablymachined to provide'a raised portion 7 the lforward edge .8 of which is so shaped that the laminae '9 maybe assembled thereagainst in order to form acomplete shim-10..l This raised por,- tion 7 is slightly lowerrthan theVv thickness of :the shim so that the head 6 in its downward' movement will not be interfered with.,V
terial now found between the'- shim leaves.'
is a front elevationof thepress.
pose a central section throughfthe shim, the f view of the finished VFigure 5 isa section takenon line of bolt holes v11-` and-two relatively smaller holes 12, into the latter of which the binding 13 is bled, as illustrated lin Figure 2. AThe binding l3is cylindrically shaped andapproxi-V lmately as long as the shim is thick.- It is of greater diameterthan the holes12 and when the laminae'havebeen assembledone binder `13, which-is` made of lead, Babbitt or'other The lshim laminas thei-V v forced .when the `laminaerhave been assemf malleable metal, isplaced over eachv hole-12 and, asv shown in Figuref, is forced into the .holes 12 sinfiultaneouslyv byV the vdescending The binder, when crowdheadfoffthe press. yedLinto holes 12under pressure, will securely grip the ladjacent edges of the laminae 9 and head when it comes vinto contactrwith the uppermost laminationof the shim -willvhavve hold them in'close Contact because the press whichcannot be expelled by thetightening of the bolt which 'passes through' hole l1," `but which will',1in theordinavry shim, work out byr vibration, leaving-the bearingloose. When itA is necessary, to tighten up the bearing due'to'we'ar of the shaft, one of theV laminaemaybe removed bythe insertionfof a knife edgethereunder. and therest ofthe Alami'nae vwill Vnot'A be disturbed or loosened.
The j projecting portion of` thev binder canl then-be pressed down liushwith the'top ofV `fthev ,Shinn This binder, therefore, permits of a'finer adjustmentv inasmuch asVv it does not add to thethickness of the shim a's-a whole Y norto the thickness of the individual lamina,
and if the laminas are drawnv to a certain thickness, the necessary-ftake-up. in a ,b'ea1y ing canr be vaccomplished bythe removal of as many lamin as is necessary. Shims of varying thickness maybe made up as needed andno allowance-is necessary for the thickness of bindingas'v is the 'jcase in somefV types of shIfI'ls.` Y Y. Y
It is tobe understood that the showngin the drawingV of `the laminae thickness is greatly exaggeratedfor purposes of illustration. .Also that I am4 not confinedto `a 7 shim havinglaminae ofk the sameA thickness,
ica Y openings therethrough, surrounded by thev but may use any thickness of laminas and any suitable material both for' the shim and the binder. l
y What I'claim is: f
1. As an improved article of a shim composed of sheet material having sheet material, and aller disposed inV said openings and serving to prevent the separation of said sheet material.
2. As an article of manufacture, a shim i composed of sheet material having aligned Vopenings therethrough, vsurroundedprby the manufacture,
sheet material, and a malleable filler member adaptedto be forced into Said openings whereby the sheets yWill be caused vto closely adhere to each other.
3. The shimV described comprising aplurality of flat sheets in superposed relation,
to all the other sheets by a metaliic binder disposed in said openings.
